Restorative Playscape Design: A Phenomenological Approach To Designing Playscapes, Jennifer Bradley
Restorative Playscape Design: A Phenomenological Approach To Designing Playscapes, Jennifer Bradley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation outlines the development of a phenomenological and restorative approach to playscape design. Restorative Playscape (RPD) is a phenomenologically based approach to designing children’s play environments that involves a process of attending to, noticing, and uncovering natural affordances for play and development, and making enhancements to the environment so that the affordances can experienced in their full potential and capacity to support children’s growth and development. The restorative approach involves the application of three phenomenological methods to identify the affordances of the outdoor play environment: 1) Child Guided Walks- to explore the affective and relational dimension of children’s experience …

High Self-Esteem And Growth Belief Contribute To Resilience Following Positive And Negative Relationship Events, Maxine Boyd, Maire Ford
High Self-Esteem And Growth Belief Contribute To Resilience Following Positive And Negative Relationship Events, Maxine Boyd, Maire Ford
Honors Thesis
Individuals differ in how they interpret and respond to romantic relationship events. Some individuals engage in responses that promote personal and relationship well-being, while others engage in maladaptive responses. It is important to identify factors that shape responses to relationship events. The current study investigated self-esteem and implicit theories of relationships as predictors of resilient and adaptive responses to negative and positive romantic relationship events. Self-esteem plays a role in shaping these responses, with low self-esteem individuals perceiving more threat from negative relationship events leading to more harmful responses and those with high self-esteem responding more resiliently and adaptively to …
Adverse Effects Of Early Exposure To Pornography And The Utilization Of Art Therapy, Meghan Potts
Adverse Effects Of Early Exposure To Pornography And The Utilization Of Art Therapy, Meghan Potts
Art Therapy Counseling Final Research Projects
Pornography is not a new phenomenon in our culture or world. With the expansion of the affordability, accessibility, and anonymity of pornography, demand and consumption rates have also escalated, along with the adverse impact associated with this growth (Coopersmith, 2006 as cited by Dines, 2017). This two-year grant proposal seeks to focus its efforts on serving children, the population being exposed to this widespread phenomenon (Wright, Paul, et al., 2021). The full-time art therapist will carry out trauma-informed prevention and intervention methods to advocate for the mental and physical health of children in individual, relational, and community contexts. This will …
Embodied Fatness In Boys: A Critical Phenomenological Study, Sean Leadem
Embodied Fatness In Boys: A Critical Phenomenological Study, Sean Leadem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation was an exploratory study of experiences of fatness in boyhood using a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative method. The author conducted in-depth, open-ended interviews with participants who identify as men and for whom fatness or related body-difference was an issue in childhood or adolescence to gather data on the meanings of fatness for boys and the men they become. Data analysis was organized around the existential dimensions of embodiment, temporality, and relationality. Themes emerging from this analysis included a) the discovery of fatness as ambiguous meanings mediated by others, b) fatness as a problem in a horizon that does not …
Peer Perceptions Of Parent-Students Seeking Higher Education, Alexandria Wall
Peer Perceptions Of Parent-Students Seeking Higher Education, Alexandria Wall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With a growing number of parents pursuing academia, it is imperative that researchers understand the social environment in which parent-students function. Stereotypes of parent-students may be held by peers, faculty, and other educational supervisors. Across two previous independent studies, evidence and rationale were provided to suggest that both positive and negative perceptions of parent-students exist, with noted differences between gender. The purpose of the current 2x2x2 between-subjects study was to analyze the social perceptions of students enrolled in higher education as varied by parenthood status, age, and gender. The social perceptions included measures accounting for perceptions of intelligence and academic …

The Potential Of Using Dance/Movement Therapy In Treating Depression In The Adult Population In Thailand: A Literature Review, Vararom Tavivoradilok
The Potential Of Using Dance/Movement Therapy In Treating Depression In The Adult Population In Thailand: A Literature Review, Vararom Tavivoradilok
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Depression is becoming increasingly prevalent in Thailand, and while many depressive symptoms manifest through the physical body, there are few treatments for depression in Thailand that involve the physical body. Previous research suggests that Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) can effectively treat depression by incorporating the physical body and individuals’ embodied feelings into the treatment process. This literature review aims to explore the potential of incorporating DMT into the treatment for depression in the adult population in Thailand, by reviewing literature about DMT practice for depression and existing treatments for depression in Thailand. The findings suggest that while physical body incorporation …

End Of Life Symptom Management In The Emergency Department, Alice Chang, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
End Of Life Symptom Management In The Emergency Department, Alice Chang, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The Emergency Department is at times the only place patients can turn to for symptom relief. In an aging population, this means that more patients are presenting to the ED towards the end of life (EOL). Emergency medicine (EM) prides itself as a specialty that handles disease-directed treatment for a variety of acute conditions. In contrast, palliative care (PC) is focused on improving the quality of life (QOL). It has become essential for EM physicians to care for patients who are not seeking life-sustaining measures, but instead quality of life interventions. Patients with serious illness, even hospice patients, present to …

Analyzing Parent Trust As A Predictor Of Parental Involvement With Adhd As Moderator, Justin D. Ligeski
Honors Capstones
The current study examined the relationship between parent trust and parent involvement. Higher levels of parent involvement have been shown to have positive effects on child behavior and achievement, and past studies have found significant positive correlations between levels of trust and involvement. ADHD was examined as a possible moderator of the association between trust and parent involvement. Extant data from a larger study involving parents of students in kindergarten was examined. Regression was used to examine the association between parent trust and parent involvement behaviors. ADHD was included in the regression models as a moderator. Results indicated that some …

Critical Race Theory: An Empirical Investigation Of Its Benefits, Saba Lily Modaressi, Desiree A. Crevecoeur-Macphail
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Within the last decade, discussions regarding the implementation of critical race theory in education have gained significant controversy among educators and politicians. Although empirical research on critical race theory is limited, conservative states continue to place bans on the teaching of critical race theory (CRT) in K-12 schools (Carter, 2021). The purpose of this study was to build empirical research on CRT, specifically examining whether a course utilizing a critical race curriculum is effective in reducing negative stereotype beliefs and improving attitudes toward critical race theory. Nineteen undergraduate students who were enrolled in the course, IES 102: The Social Construct …
Exploring The Relationship Between Participation In Hookup Culture And Attachment Style, Tanshi Mohan
Exploring The Relationship Between Participation In Hookup Culture And Attachment Style, Tanshi Mohan
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The taboo around casual sex has been decreasing over the years, especially on college campuses; it is estimated that around 60-80% of college students engage in hookups (Garcia et al., 2013). Hookup culture is a college campus phenomenon that encompasses the social scripts, beliefs, and norms around casual sex among college students (Allison, 2019). The term “hooking up” includes a range of sexual behaviors, from kissing to intercourse, that have no expectation of a committed relationship after the encounter (LaBrie, 2012). The goal of this study is to understand how differences in an individual’s attachment styles and sociosexuality (attitude towards …

Microaggressions Versus Blatant Discrimination And Their Effects On Mental Health, Ian Lock
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This study examined the relationship between types of discrimination and its effect on mental health. Specifically, comparing microaggressions and blatant discrimination to see which variable had a significant impact on depression and anxiety. Microaggressions, derogatory slights/insults directed at members of an oppressed group, are a primary focus for researchers looking at racial discrimination. The impact of microaggressions is prevalent across a myriad of different marginalized groups such as people of color, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. Microaggressions have a large negative impact on mental and physical well-being in individuals, with research finding that it has a negative impact on symptoms …
How Single Parent Households Affect The Sociability Of Children, Roland Jonathan Casiquin
How Single Parent Households Affect The Sociability Of Children, Roland Jonathan Casiquin
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Family dynamics that differ from the traditional nuclear family have become increasingly common in the home. When examining differences between single parent households and two-parent households in terms of sociability, research has shown that children in single parent homes displayed less social competence than children in two-parent homes, based on the children’s interaction with their peers in school. However, less research has explored the effect of reintroducing a second parental figure after the separation of children’s parents. This study retrospectively examined children’s sociability as a result of their parents’ relationship status as well as several aspects of the children’s living …

Change Of Perception And Positive Attitudes Toward Therapy: A Comparative Analysis Conducted On Veterans Of The United States Of America, Hailey Buitrago, Desiree Crevecoeur-Macphail
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Active duty military members can be subjected to significant amounts of stress, trauma, and physical and mental exhaustion during their service periods. It is vital to recognize the extent of these mental health disorders because they affect 27% of veterans, and when not adequately treated, they can lead to increased functional disability, even more so than physical illnesses (Philips, 2016; Wells et al., 1989). This study aims to examine how different types of information influence the perceptions of therapy for veterans. Veterans of all branches of the United States military between the ages of 18 and 100 were asked to …
Universe And You: A Search For Universal Moral Values, Jillian Meyer '23
Universe And You: A Search For Universal Moral Values, Jillian Meyer '23
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
Intercultural and multicultural communication can be difficult when opposing points of view try to find common ground. This is, in part, due to the different moral values people hold, which can come from their spiritual beliefs, legal systems, personal principles, relationships, and more. The present study aims to find a set of universal moral principles that apply to all humans in order to improve intercultural and multicultural communication. This study will synthesize the current literature on universal moral values across six different disciplines. These disciplines include philosophy/ethics, religion, communication, developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology, and anthropology. First, this paper will review …

Morality And Me: An Investigation Of A Moral Framework For College Students, Jillian Meyer '23
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
The field of moral psychology studies how people make decisions about right and wrong. These moral decisions can be based on a number of different moral considerations in the dilemma. The present study looks at the moral considerations of college students in the U.S when faced with a moral dilemma. We surveyed U.S. college students in February 2023 by presenting them with a moral dilemma they might come across during their college years and asking what they would do in the situation and why. This study developed the Moral Dilemmas Questionnaire to test the moral reasoning of college students. The …

Revisiting The Global Measures Of Overall Neuropsychological Function And The Impact Of Race-Based Normative Data In Clinical And Forensic Populations, Zachary Dipasquale, Donald Masey, Robert A. Ditomasso, Gabriel Stanziano
Research Day
This study aims to examine the impact of race-based normative data on global measures of overall neuropsychological functioning. Further, it examines the changes made to the Average Impairment Rating (AIR) in the context of race-based norming and the dismissal of a previously included measure, Picture Arrangement. The AIR is a commonly used index to classify the severity of diffuseness related to brain injury. Despite its use, the AIR has a very limited body of research describing the impact of racial norming on the index. Based on a review of the literature, the Picture Arrangement subtest removal was never researched in …

Sex And Gender Differences In Attention-Deficit / Hyperactive Disorder (Adhd): A Literature Review, Kaitlyn N. Blair, Min Young Kim
Research Day
Background:
The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) Sex and Gender Health Collaborative identified the need for a concise factsheet for clinicians outlining sex and gender differences in Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) as ADHD is underdiagnosed, undertreated, and frequently misdiagnosed in women due to lack of recognition of gender-specific presentation. AMWA's goal is to improve access and exposure to sex and gender differences in healthcare as few medical schools educate students on these differences. The poster summarizes the reviewed literature on the prevalence, diagnosis, referral for, prevention, clinical presentation, and treatment of ADHD with a goal to reduce sex and …
Ethics And Us: A Review Of The Moral Psychology Field, Jillian Meyer '23
Ethics And Us: A Review Of The Moral Psychology Field, Jillian Meyer '23
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
The field of moral psychology is a field of growing interest as psychologists become more interested in the study of how people make decisions about right and wrong. Research from several different disciplines has contributed to the study of moral psychology, making it inherently interdisciplinary. Moral psychology finds its roots in philosophical theories, before finding its place in developmental psychology. More modern research includes contributions from anthropology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and more. Future moral psychology research may discover more disciplines that can contribute to the research and explain the real-life implications of people’s moral systems. This paper traces …
Women Who Kill: Providing And Justifying Alternative Legal Pathways To The Use Of Battered Women Syndrome As Self-Defense, Sara Das '23
Women Who Kill: Providing And Justifying Alternative Legal Pathways To The Use Of Battered Women Syndrome As Self-Defense, Sara Das '23
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
Legal scholars have been grappling with how to handle legal cases concerning battered women since the 70s. Lenore Walker argued that battered women have a condition called battered woman syndrome that alters their perceptions. The cases by themselves do not fulfill requirements for self-defense, a justification doctrine nor duress, an excuse doctrine. I argue that battered women should be excused, not through using battered women syndrome to support pre-existing claims, but instead by using other psychological research to support Morse’s partial excuse doctrine. The first part of the paper argues why battered woman syndrome does not work as a psychological …
Women’S Desire: A Journey From Pleasing To Sexual Fulfillment, Erin Eichinger
Women’S Desire: A Journey From Pleasing To Sexual Fulfillment, Erin Eichinger
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Women’s sexual desire, while being a common experience, is subjective and elusive in nature (Meana, 2010). Desire has typically been researched from a heteronormative standpoint which may inaccurately represent the nuanced ways in which women experience desire. Since women are socialized as selfless and nurturing ( Conley et al., 2011; Keifer & Sanchez, 2007), understanding their own desires and communicating those desires to partners may be complicated. This qualitative study used a feminist perspective to examine the ways in which women fulfill, communicate, and experience sexual desire. A research team recruited 21 self-identified women to participate in semi-structured interviews, using …
Redefining Anger For Sexual And Gender Minorities Using Art As A Visual Voice, Kirsten Ranheim
Redefining Anger For Sexual And Gender Minorities Using Art As A Visual Voice, Kirsten Ranheim
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Art therapy is an increasingly popular approach for addressing trauma and anger in clinical settings. This literature review explores the connections between art therapy, trauma, gender, and anger, drawing on a range of studies and theoretical perspectives. Background is provided on the history of anger within the context of societal institutions, interpersonal power dynamics, psychiatric nosology, and social justice movements. The review concludes that art therapy is ideally suited as a trauma-informed approach to addressing anger in the therapeutic setting. This is due to the unique opportunities that art making provides for helping individuals express and process their emotions nonverbally, …
Transcendence: Exploring The Connections Between Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Identities And Experiences Of Nature Through Art, Mc Jackson
Undergraduate Theses
“Transcendence: Exploring the connections between transgender/gender non-conforming identities and experiences of nature through art” is the written portion of a creative thesis revolving around an immersive art installation and short film. Transcendence, the installation, was created to promote connection by exploring the overlap between transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) experiences and experiences of nature. Part of this installation is a short film of interviews conducted with transgender and GNC individuals about nature, their gender experiences, and the transcendent nature of the two. The written thesis analyzes existing literature on nature as a restorative, therapeutic, spiritual setting, offers insight into …
Targeting Social Connection In The Context Of Trauma: Functional Outcomes And Mechanisms Of Change, Andrew J. Smith, David Pincus, Bernard P. Ricca
Targeting Social Connection In The Context Of Trauma: Functional Outcomes And Mechanisms Of Change, Andrew J. Smith, David Pincus, Bernard P. Ricca
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The current study presents and preliminarily tests a brief, theory driven intervention designed to target social connectivity as a transdiagnostic mechanism of health. We tested four hypotheses to examine whether and how explicitly targeting social behavior engagement (activating values-led behaviors towards specific network members) may improve other downstream aspects of social connectivity (i.e., social cognitions measured as loneliness, interpersonal closeness, perceived social support) and functioning (quality of life [QOL] and posttraumatic stress symptoms [PTS]). Methods. Participants included 15 patients (10 veterans, 5 firefighters) who completed the six-session intervention. Demographics: age (M = 46, SD = 17), 87% male, race (80% …
Reconnecting With Exes And Having Sex With Platonic Roommates During The First Five Months Of The Covid - 19 Pandemic, Valentyna Simon, Alex Kraft, Amanda Gesselman, Justin Garcia
Reconnecting With Exes And Having Sex With Platonic Roommates During The First Five Months Of The Covid - 19 Pandemic, Valentyna Simon, Alex Kraft, Amanda Gesselman, Justin Garcia
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic limited people’s interactions as a result of social distancing and stay-at-home orders across the U.S., and research documented declines in partnered sex during this time (Hensel et al., 2020). It is unclear if people who were single during the first few months of the pandemic found sexual connections with ex-partners or roommates. In the present study, we examined the prevalence of people contacting ex-partners and non-romantic roommates to engage in sex.
We analyzed data from a national sample of people who were currently single in the U.S. as part of The Kinsey …
