Motivation To Collaborate: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Perspectives Of Service Providers On An Alternative First Response Program, Desiree' J. Duboise
Motivation To Collaborate: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Perspectives Of Service Providers On An Alternative First Response Program, Desiree' J. Duboise
Dissertations and Theses
Alternative first response programs have existed in the United States for decades, and the formation of these programs has increased across the country in light of public calls for non-police responses to emergency. Portland Street Response (PSR) is an alternative first response program located in Portland, Oregon. The program assists individuals experiencing mental health crises by providing unarmed response in non-violent situations that ordinarily would be responded to by armed police officers. In order for such programs to thrive, collaboration with other organizations is crucial. Service-providing organizations are uniquely prepared to collaborate with a program such as PSR due to …
Detecting Careless Cases In Practice Tests, Steven Nydick
Detecting Careless Cases In Practice Tests, Steven Nydick
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊
In this paper, we present a novel method for detecting careless responses in a low-stakes practice exam using machine learning models. Rather than classifying test-taker responses as careless based on model fit statistics or knowledge of truth, we built a model to predict significant changes in test scores between a practice test and an official test based on attributes of practice test items. We extracted features from practice test items using hypotheses about how careless test takers respond to items and cross-validated model performance to optimize out-of-sample predictions and reduce heteroscedasticity when predicting the closest official test. All analyses use …
Origin Of Differences In Child Maltreatment Between Italy And America, Morgan Huff
Origin Of Differences In Child Maltreatment Between Italy And America, Morgan Huff
Honors College Theses
There is a distinct difference between the rates of child abuse and neglect in the United States and Italy. Specifically, the United States has a higher rate of child maltreatment than Italy (Bernacchi et al., 2016; Finkelhor et al., 2009). There is also variation in the types of maltreatment that the children suffer within each country (Bernacchi et al., 2016; Mehta et al., 2023). This literature review analyzes potential explanations for these differences in rates of child maltreatment by examining the ways in which this maltreatment may be impacted by access to health insurance, religion, family structure, education, poverty, and …
Linguistic Impact On The Use Of The Reliable Digit Span For Performance Validity In A Sample Of English-Spanish Bilingual Adults, Amy Polinsky
Student Theses
Performance validity tests (PVTs) are used alongside neuropsychological assessments to help detect suspect effort. One of the most widely used PVTs, the Reliable Digit Span (RDS), and its latest version, the RDS-revised (RDS-R), have been widely accepted as valid and reliable within the general population. However, as the United States becomes increasingly globalized, questions arise regarding the validity of language-based tests such as the RDS and RDS-R amongst English-Spanish bilingual populations. This study used a within-subject design with 28 bilingual undergraduate students, testing them on the Digit Span (the test that RDS results are based on) in both English and …

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: A growing number of refugee groups are seeking care within the U.S. health care system for medical, psychological, and social needs. Research is limited in understanding refugee-specific conceptualizations of helping relationships and provider characteristics that improve interactions in health systems. This study aimed to identify provider characteristics that facilitate engagement and helpfulness in a refugee-specific population from refugee participant voices to inform future practices of health care clinics.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews with refugee participants were conducted to assess 1) experiences moving on from difficult experiences, 2) engagement with the health system, and 3) provider characteristics that facilitated engagement and …

BACKGROUND: Awareness with paralysis (AWP) is memory recall during neuromuscular blockade (NMB) and can cause significant psychological harm. Decades of effort and rigorous trials have been conducted to prevent AWP in the operating room, where prevalence is 0.1-0.2%. By contrast, AWP in mechanically ventilated emergency department (ED) patients is common, with estimated prevalence of 3.3-7.4% among survivors given NMB. Longer-acting NMB use is a critical risk for AWP, and we have shown an association between ED rocuronium use and increased AWP prevalence. As NMB are given to more than 90% of ED patients during tracheal intubation, this trial provides a …
Dual Consciousness: What Psychology And Counseling Theories Can Teach And Learn Regarding Identity And The Role-Playing Game Experience, Elektra Diakolambrianou, Sarah L. Bowman
Dual Consciousness: What Psychology And Counseling Theories Can Teach And Learn Regarding Identity And The Role-Playing Game Experience, Elektra Diakolambrianou, Sarah L. Bowman
Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM
Many psychologists, therapists, and educators have emphasized the practice of play, especially with enacted roles, as a site for learning and therapeutic growth. This article weaves together a plethora of theories from psychology, Counseling, and role-playing game studies in an effort to understand the nature of enacted roles, their relationship to identity, and their transformative potential. Challenging the notion that identity is a fixed, stable monolith, the article synthesizes four overall approaches to theorizing the nature of identity drawn from various theories: identity as a social construct, narrative identity, identity as psychodynamic, and identities as parts of a whole. The …

Prospective Relationship Between Co-Rumination And Depressive Symptoms In Early Adolescence: Brooding Rumination As A Mechanism, Katherine S. Benjamin
Prospective Relationship Between Co-Rumination And Depressive Symptoms In Early Adolescence: Brooding Rumination As A Mechanism, Katherine S. Benjamin
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Adolescence is a developmental period during which there is a significant increase in depressive symptoms. Both interpersonal and intrapersonal emotion regulation strategies, including co-rumination and rumination, contribute to the development of depressive symptoms. However, there has been relatively little research investigating the connections between co-rumination and rumination and their associations with depression. Theories of depression, such as interpersonal theories and Response Styles Theory suggest that both relational processes and the ways in which an individual responds internally may promote and maintain depressive symptoms. The current study examined whether brooding rumination serves as the mechanism explaining the relationship between co-rumination and …
Mitigating Sunk Cost Bias For Consumers: Considering Alternatives Within High And Low Construal Levels When Costs Are Sunk, Jasmine N. Ahmad
Mitigating Sunk Cost Bias For Consumers: Considering Alternatives Within High And Low Construal Levels When Costs Are Sunk, Jasmine N. Ahmad
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This paper explores how sunk costs increase consumers’ vulnerability to fraud and explores possible intervention strategies. Sunk cost bias occurs when individuals persist in an activity due to past investments (Arkes & Blumer, 1985). Outcome salience, framing, and alternatives can help alleviate loss aversion and persistence when costs are sunk (Stewart, Chater, Stott, & Reimers, 2003; Van Schie & Van Der Pligt, 1995). Option evaluation is influenced by an individual’s construal level (Ding & Keh, 2017; Henderson, 2013; Sun, Keh, & Lee, 2019). Construal level theory (CL) describes the impact of psychological distance on thinking– with greater distance thinking …

Current Use Of Cigarettes In The United States: The Joint Role Of Race/Ethnicity And Health Insurance Coverage, Julia N. Soulakova, Lisa J. Crockett
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The goal of this study was to assess the joint role of race/ethnicity and a health insurance coverage type (private, Medicare, Medicaid) in current cigarette use among adults in the U.S. Data from the 2019 Tobacco Use Supplement and the 2019 Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey were merged (n = 39,882). Bivariate associations between each coverage type and smoking prevalence were examined within each of six racial/ethnic groups. A multiple logistic regression model (for the odds of current cigarette use) was estimated to explore the interactions between race/ethnicity and an indicator of each type of …
Navigating Sense Of Home: Migration Experiences Of Home And Community, Andrew Peter Camilleri
Navigating Sense Of Home: Migration Experiences Of Home And Community, Andrew Peter Camilleri
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Migrants experience significant stresses when transitioning to find a sense of belonging from one country to another (Kirmaryer et. al 2011), particularly when the nature of migration is forced. Language barriers, currency differences, different foods, written and unwritten rules of conduct as well as different climates all contribute to make the acculturative process difficult and stressful (Jackson & Bauder, 2014). Understanding how migrants navigate this process and the resources required to successfully integrate within a new host community is an important area of research both for migrants and the host communities.
Using an archival dataset collected by researchers from the …
The Dangerous Effect Of Entitlement On White Nationalist Ideology, Kara Elizabeth Harris
The Dangerous Effect Of Entitlement On White Nationalist Ideology, Kara Elizabeth Harris
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Within the past few years, White nationalism has been on the rise due to societal changes and feelings of uncertainty for White Americans' perceptions of their racial group’s future. As a result, many have speculated what may be a factor in this rise. Previously it has been found that having a high White identity is associated with White nationalist ideologies. However, White identity may not be enough to drive White nationalist ideologies and the violence that can follow. Feelings of entitlement towards status, preferential treatment, and resources may contribute to White nationalist ideologies based on beliefs of superiority and deservedness …

Ageism By A Community Sample Of Young Adults: Expanding The Contact Hypothesis To Explore Ageism, Helena Lucia Swanson
Ageism By A Community Sample Of Young Adults: Expanding The Contact Hypothesis To Explore Ageism, Helena Lucia Swanson
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Aging demographics globally are changing rapidly, resulting in the category of “older adults” (65 years and older) growing to eventually become the largest age demographic (United Nations, 2022). As our world gets older, ageism is a growing concern given its health, societal, cultural, and political consequences (Chrisler et al., 2016; Bugental & Hehman, 2007; Levy et al., 2020). Following Allport’s Contact Hypothesis (1954), this dissertation empirically analyzed predictors of ageism, including contact with older adults, for younger adults (18-26 years old) residing in U.S. communities. Participants were recruited using Prolific Academic, an online crowdsourcing platform and responded to five scales …
The Role Of Parenting In Developmental Trajectories Of Risk For Adolescent Substance Use: A Bioecological Systems Cascade Model, Kristine Marceau
The Role Of Parenting In Developmental Trajectories Of Risk For Adolescent Substance Use: A Bioecological Systems Cascade Model, Kristine Marceau
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Parenting is a key influence and prevention target for adolescent substance use, and changes dramatically in form and function during adolescence. This theoretical synthesis reviews evidence of associations of substance use-specific parenting behaviors, dimensions, and styles with adolescent substance use, and integrates key developmental and family theories (e.g., bioecological, dynamical systems, family systems, developmental cascades) and methodological-conceptual advances to illustrate the complex role that parenting plays for the development of adolescent substance use in combination with child and contextual influences. The resulting bioecological systems cascade model centers the dynamic co-development of parenting and child influences in developmental cascades that lead …

Multicultural Competence In Counseling Students: Addressing Social Class In Multicultural Counseling Courses, Carly Paro-Tompkins, Jennifer Pereira, Joffrey S. Suprina, Elda Veloso Ph.D, Eric Davis, Renata F. S. Goldhagen, Katarzyna Wojnas, Samantha Both
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
There are consistent findings of clinician bias toward clients of differing social classes, and little research about faculty efforts to address bias within educational programs. Informed by a literature review, quantitative methodology and descriptive exploratory design were used to examine counselor educators’ instructional strategies for teaching multicultural counseling. Additionally, perceptions of faculty effectiveness and comfort level with social class issues were explored.
Measuring The Contributions Of Perceptual And Attentional Processes In The Complete Composite Face Paradigm, William B. Erickson, Dawn R. Weatherford
Measuring The Contributions Of Perceptual And Attentional Processes In The Complete Composite Face Paradigm, William B. Erickson, Dawn R. Weatherford
Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)
Theories of holistic face processing vary widely with respect to conceptualizations, paradigms, and stimuli. These divergences have left several theoretical questions unresolved. Namely, the role of attention in face perception is understudied. To rectify this gap in the literature, we combined the complete composite face task (allowing for predictions of multiple theoretical conceptualizations and connecting with a large body of research) with a secondary auditory discrimination task at encoding (to avoid a visual perceptual bottleneck). Participants studied upright, intact faces within a continuous recognition paradigm, which intermixes study and test trials at multiple retention intervals. Within subjects, participants studied faces …
Ways To Prevent Moral Disengagement For Youtube Content Creators: The Role Of Empathy And Self-Compassion, Nathan Andrew Pennington
Ways To Prevent Moral Disengagement For Youtube Content Creators: The Role Of Empathy And Self-Compassion, Nathan Andrew Pennington
Dissertations
This study sought to assess the role empathy and self-compassion play in lessening the impact of stress and moral disengagement for digital entrepreneurs, specifically, YouTube content creators. The desire for status and the need for venture legitimacy within the content creation economy, while considered mostly positive traits, can be taken to the extreme, leading to a lack of empathy and self-compassion and even degradation and moral disengagement. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Quantitative data within the study provides statistical evidence of correlations and trends, while qualitative data discusses the perspectives and lived …
Implicit Trait Policies And Situational Judgment Tests: How Personality Shapes Judgments Of Effective Behavior, Alexander Edward Johnson
Implicit Trait Policies And Situational Judgment Tests: How Personality Shapes Judgments Of Effective Behavior, Alexander Edward Johnson
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
The Situational Judgment Test (SJT) is a popular selection tool used by employers to
make hiring decisions due to their strong predictive validity. SJTs present job candidates with
hypothetical scenarios, asking them to choose the responses that best fit those situations. SJTs
have been used to measure a range of knowledge, skills, and abilities, but what they measure and
why they predict performance remains unclear. Lievens and Motowidlo (2016) called for a
reframing of the SJT as a measure of general domain knowledge. According to their theory, SJTs
measure procedural knowledge, which is composed of general domain knowledge—
operationalized as …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of counselors during the transition from traditional face-to-face counseling to a teletherapy format during the COVID-19 pandemic and how counselors were able to utilize emotional intelligence skills/abilities during this time. The theories that guided this study were the ability model of emotional intelligence and social constructivism. The following questions guided this study: How did counselors experience their changing role from primarily face-to-face counseling to teletherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic? How did counselors experience emotional intelligence during the transition from traditional face-to-face counseling to teletherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic? …
A Phenomenological Approach To Explore The Lived Experiences Of Virtual Employees' Socialization And Organizational Identification, Zachary D. Kostusyk
A Phenomenological Approach To Explore The Lived Experiences Of Virtual Employees' Socialization And Organizational Identification, Zachary D. Kostusyk
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Virtual work has been increasing throughout the years with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating that growth. However, the effects of virtual work remain, leaving much to be known about what experiences virtual employees have with their organization that lead to diverse outcomes. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how virtual employees experienced organizational socialization and organizational identification early in their organizational tenure. The theoretical framework for this study used Blau’s (1964) social exchange theory (SET) and Tajfel and Turner’s (1979) Social identity theory (SIT). Data from 13 participants’ semi-structured interviews were analyzed by the researcher using Heidegger’s (1889–1976) interpretive hermeneutic spiral along …

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and neglect (CAN) is prevalent, associated with long-term adversities, and often undetected. Primary care settings offer a unique opportunity to identify CAN and facilitate referrals, when warranted. Electronic health records (EHR) contain extensive information to support healthcare decisions, yet time constraints preclude most providers from thorough EHR reviews that could indicate CAN. Strategies that summarize EHR data to identify CAN and convey this to providers has potential to mitigate CAN-related sequelae. This study used expert review/consensus and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to develop and test a lexicon to characterize children who have experienced or are at risk …

Transformational Leadership Behaviors Promoting Job Satisfaction In Mental Health Leaders: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Taylor Blakeley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Similar to leaders in other roles, mental health leaders are responsible for leading, supporting, and guiding their followers. Transformational leadership and job satisfaction are two popular areas of research. However, research primarily focuses on followers’ job satisfaction rather than leaders with transformational leadership. This study focused on what and how mental health leaders’ transformational leadership behaviors promote their job satisfaction. This study used a qualitative phenomenological research design with semi-structured interviews as the data collection method. The population sample consisted of ten (10) mental health leaders. The participants were recruited using social media platforms Facebook, LinkedIn, and Liberty University’s School …
