Modeling Cherenkov Light Detection Timing For The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, Keilan Finn Ramirez
Modeling Cherenkov Light Detection Timing For The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, Keilan Finn Ramirez
Physics
The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is an array of four 12-meter telescopes which use the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique to conduct high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. VERITAS detects magnitude and location information associated with Cherenkov light, and uses this information to indirectly observe gamma-rays through a software reconstruction process. VERITAS also records timing information corresponding to Cherenkov light detection, and this additional information could theoretically be incorporated into the reconstruction process to improve the accuracy of gamma-ray observations. The first step to including timing information is to understand when Cherenkov light detection would be expected from a known …
Fabricating Nanophotonic Devices Using Nanofabrication Techniques, Scott Cummings
Fabricating Nanophotonic Devices Using Nanofabrication Techniques, Scott Cummings
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Nanofabrication processes are widely used to make the integrated circuits and computer chips that are ubiquitous in today’s technology. These fabrication processes can also be applied to the creation of nanophotonic devices. The ways in which we apply these fabrication techniques in the field of photonics is often constrained by the technologies used for electronics manufacturing which presents an interesting engineering challenge. These limitations include availability and cost of certain fabrication equipment and techniques required to create state-of-the-art nanophotonic devices. Through work with the University of California Irvine nano-fabrication cleanroom, we designed and fabricated various integrated photonic components including grating …

Ultrafast Magnetic Entropy Dynamics With Time-Resolved Pump-Probe Magneto-Optical Technique., Sahar Goharshenasanesfahani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been observed that ultrathin films, multilayers, or magnetic nanostructures indicate novel magnetic phenomena that differ profoundly from the respective bulk properties. Besides, because of the broad applications of these magnetic materials in the industry, they are an exciting research area. Hence, investigating the low-dimensional magnetic systems is one of the most active fields in experimental condensed matter physics. Magnetization dynamics can occur over a wide range of time scales (from seconds to femtoseconds). Some of these processes even occur on time scales as short as a few picoseconds (10-12s) or femtoseconds (10-15s). Measurement of …
Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus For Terahertz Emission And Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer, Mahmudul Hasan Doha
Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus For Terahertz Emission And Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer, Mahmudul Hasan Doha
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The main focus of this work is to investigate two potential optical and optoelectronic applications of black phosphorus (BP): the near-field radiative heat transfer in plasmonic heterostructures with graphene and terahertz emission from multi-layer BP photoconductive antennas. When the separation distance between graphene-black phosphorene is much smaller than or comparable to the thermal wavelength at different temperatures, a near-field radiation heat transfer breaks the Planck blackbody limit. The magnitude of the near-field radiation enhancement acutely depends on the gate voltage, doping, and vacuum gap of the graphene and BP pair. The strong near-field radiation heat transfer enhancement of the specific …
Characterization Of Infrared Metasurface Optics With An Optical Scatterometer, Matthew R. Miller
Characterization Of Infrared Metasurface Optics With An Optical Scatterometer, Matthew R. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
An optical scatterometer is used to characterize the infrared scatter of a dielectric metasurface cylindrical lens and two variants of that design. The design uses dielectric nanopillars to create the parabolic phase delay required for lensing; the variants change the length of the nanopillars from the design length of 4 microns to 0.9 and 5.2 microns. Scatter measurements were made at the design wavelength of 4 microns, and at 3.39 and 5 microns. These measurements showed wide-angle scatter greater than that measured for a conventional refractive optic, and that these metasurfaces perform their optical function best at the design wavelength …

Gaas Growth On Sapphire Substrates (C And R Plane) For Integrated Microwave Photonics (Imwp), Samir Kumar Saha
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The microwave signal processing in the optical domain creates new opportunities for information and communication technology (ICT) and networks by increasing speed, bandwidth, and processing capability. IMWP incorporates the functions of microwave photonics components/subsystems in monolithic or hybrid photonic circuits to meet future needs. Sapphire platforms have the potential to integrate all-in-one, for instance, light source, analog signal processing, light detection, CMOS control circuit, silicon on sapphire to achieve high-performance, low-cost mixed-signal optical links etc. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been used to grow GaAs on sapphire substrates to integrate optoelectronic devices in the same platform.

Interferometric Lithography- An Approach To Large Area And Cost Effective Nanopatterning, Vineeth Sasidharan
Interferometric Lithography- An Approach To Large Area And Cost Effective Nanopatterning, Vineeth Sasidharan
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
In this dissertation interferometric lithography is approached in two different ways to address two important constraints of nanopatterning. One approach solves the problem of scaling up interferometric lithography to wafer scale (4 inch or larger) area. Through the second approach we have developed a nanopatterning technique based on interferometric lithography by using an inexpensive (~$100) diode laser as source, making interferometric lithography a very cost-effective technique.
Wafer-scale large-area nanopatterning was developed using an amplitude grating mask as a grating beam splitter along with spatial averaging of laser intensity by wobbling. The longitudinal and transverse coherence issues both are eased by …
Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy Of 3d Orientation And Anisotropic Wobble Using A Polarized Vortex Point Spread Function, Tianben Ding, Matthew D. Lew
Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy Of 3d Orientation And Anisotropic Wobble Using A Polarized Vortex Point Spread Function, Tianben Ding, Matthew D. Lew
Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations
Within condensed matter, single fluorophores are sensitive probes of their chemical environments, but it is difficult to use their limited photon budget to image precisely their positions, 3D orientations, and rotational diffusion simultaneously. We demonstrate the polarized vortex point spread function (PSF) for measuring these parameters, including characterizing the anisotropy of a molecule’s wobble, simultaneously from a single image. Even when imaging dim emitters (∼500 photons detected), the polarized vortex PSF can obtain 12 nm localization precision, 4°–8° orientation precision, and 26° wobble precision. We use the vortex PSF to measure the emission anisotropy of fluorescent beads, the wobble dynamics …
Spatiotemporal Non-Uniformly Correlated Beams, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Spatiotemporal Non-Uniformly Correlated Beams, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Faculty Publications
We present a new partially coherent source with spatiotemporal coupling. The stochastic light, which we call a spatiotemporal (ST) non-uniformly correlated (NUC) beam, combines space and time in an inhomogeneous (shift- or space-variant) correlation function. This results in a source that self-focuses at a controllable location in space-time, making these beams potentially useful in applications such as optical trapping, optical tweezing, and particle manipulation. We begin by developing the mutual coherence function for an ST NUC beam. We then examine its free-space propagation characteristics by deriving an expression for the mean intensity at any plane z ≥ 0. To validate …

Uncertainty Analysis For Ccd-Augmented Casi® Brdf Measurement System, Todd V. Small, Samuel D. Butler, Michael A. Marciniak
Faculty Publications
This work presents a measurement uncertainty analysis for a system designed to simultaneously capture specular in-plane and out-of-plane bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data with high spatial resolution by augmenting the Complete Angle Scatter Instrument (CASI®) with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Various scatter flux, incident flux, scatter angle, and detector solid angle uncertainty contributions are considered and evaluated based on imperfectly known system parameters. In particular, incident flux temporal fluctuation, detector noise and non-linearity, and out-of-plane aperture misalignment considerations each require significant adjustment from original CASI® uncertainty analysis, and expressions for neutral density (ND) filter, scatter angle, and solid …

Resampling And Super-Resolution Of Hexagonally Sampled Images Using Deep Learning, Dylan Flaute, Russell C. Hardie, Hamed Elwarfalli
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Super-resolution (SR) aims to increase the resolution of imagery. Applications include security, medical imaging, and object recognition. We propose a deep learning-based SR system that takes a hexagonally sampled low-resolution image as an input and generates a rectangularly sampled SR image as an output. For training and testing, we use a realistic observation model that includes optical degradation from diffraction and sensor degradation from detector integration. Our SR approach first uses non-uniform interpolation to partially upsample the observed hexagonal imagery and convert it to a rectangular grid. We then leverage a state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture designed for SR …

This work proposes a facial expression recognition system for a diversified field of appli- cations. The purpose of the proposed system is to predict the type of expressions in a human face region. The implementation of the proposed method is fragmented into three components. In the first component, from the given input image, a tree-structured part model has been applied that predicts some landmark points on the input image to detect facial regions. The detected face region was normalized to its fixed size and then down-sampled to its varying sizes such that the advantages, due to the effect of multi-resolution …

Solar Cell Brdf Measurement And Modeling With Out-Of-Plane Data, Todd V. Small, Samuel D. Butler, Michael A. Marciniak
Faculty Publications
In this work, a CCD-augmented complete angle scatter instrument (CASI) with a visible red laser source was used to measure the BRDF of a commercially available solar cell designed for small satellites, simultaneously capturing both in-plane and out-of-plane data with high angular resolution surrounding the specular direction. The measurements exhibited three distinct scatter features: a central specular peak, an offset specular peak, and a diffraction pattern. The two peaks were caused by different material surfaces with slightly different normal directions, and the diffraction pattern arose from periodically-spaced metal conducting bars running in one direction across the solar cell surface. The …
Improved Out-Of-Plane Brdf Measurement And Modeling, Todd V. Small
Improved Out-Of-Plane Brdf Measurement And Modeling, Todd V. Small
Theses and Dissertations
The bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) describes the directional (spatial) nature of light’s reflectance from a material surface. When incident light of a particular wavelength strikes a material surface from a particular direction, portions of that incident light will be reflected into various directions in various amounts, depending on the material’s surface characteristics. Historically, the vast majority of BRDF measurement and modeling research has focused on reflection within the plane-of incidence (in-plane) and dealt primarily with simplified isotropic BRDFs. Remote sensing applications, such as satellite light curve analysis, typically rely on closed-form microfacet models for efficiency. There are many factors, …

Linear And Non Linear Properties Of Two-Dimensional Exciton-Polaritons, Mandeep Khatoniar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Technology has been accelerating at breakneck speed since the first quantum revolution, an era that ushered transistors and lasers in the late 1940s and early 1960s. Both of these technologies relied on a matured understanding of quantum theories and since their inception has propelled innovation and development in various sectors like communications, metrology, and sensing. Optical technologies were thought to be the game changers in terms of logic and computing operations, with the elevator pitch being "computing at speed of light", a fundamental speed limit imposed by this universe’s legal system (a.k.a physics). However, it was soon realized that that …

Topological Classical Wave Systems With Modulations, Interactions, And Higher-Order Topological States, Mengyao Li
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Topological phases in classical wave systems, such as photonic and acoustic, have been actively investigated and applied for wave guiding, lasing, and numerous other novel phenomena and device applications Topological phase transitions enable robust boundary states, and the field has been broadening recently into a vast variety of systems with temporal modulations and interactions. Floquet modulation, for example, is the modulation applied periodically in time which may break symmetries and leads to novel topological phases.
Introducing non-Hermitian Floquet modulation enables more interesting phenomena including bandgap in imaginary part of the spectrum and gainy/lossy topological edge states with complex energy values. …

Wave Excitation And Dynamics In Disordered Systems, Yiming Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis presents studies of the field and energy excited in disordered systems as well as the dynamics of scattering.
Dynamic and steady state aspects of wave propagation are deeply connected in lossless open systems in which the scattering matrix is unitary. There is then an equivalence among the energy excited within the medium through all channels, the Wigner time delay, which is the sum of dwell times in all channels coupled to the medium, and the density of states. But these equivalences fall away in the presence of material loss or gain. In this paper, we use microwave measurements, …
Nonlinear Optical Studies Of Interfacial Ferroelectricity And Strain Distribution In Perovskite Dielectric Films, Tony Le
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Dielectric and ferroelectric perovskite films have been model energy storage structures for their low-dielectric loss, extremely high charge-discharge speed, and good temperature stability, yet there is still much to understand about the material’s limitations. This dissertation presents a detailed understanding of the strain-induced ferroelectricity at the boundary between a strontium titanate (SrTiO3) ultrathin film epitaxially grown on a germanium (Ge) substrate through optical second harmonic generation (SHG), and the polydomain distribution in the Zr-doped BaTiO3 (BZT) films by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy.
First, SHG measurements were performed to reveal interfacial ferroelectricity in the epitaxial SrTiO3/Ge (100) …

Analysis Of Space To Ground Ladar Performance With Non-Traditional Optics, Prayant P.S. Hanjra
Theses and Dissertations
Two major obstacles to space-based LADAR systems are low power returns from targets and limitations on size and weight for transporting large optics into orbit. Signals incur significant losses during roundtrip propagation through the atmosphere and from diffuse scattering off of targets. Models, such as the Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) simulator and High Energy Laser End to End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS) can predict these losses due to the atmosphere and optical components for a variety of atmospheric and environmental conditions across the globe. A transmissometer is used to validate these models. These losses are used to determine …

Accurate bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models are essential for computer graphics and remote sensing performance. The popular microfacet class of BRDF models is geometric-optics-based and computationally inexpensive. Fitting microfacet models to scatterometry measurements is a common yet challenging requirement that can result in a model being fit as one of several unique local minima. Final model fit accuracy is therefore largely based on the quality of the initial parameter estimate. This makes for widely varying material parameter estimates and causes inconsistent performance comparisons across microfacet models, as will be shown with synthetic data. We proposed a recursive optimization method …

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is used to describe reflectances of materials by calculating the ratio of the reflected radiance to the incident irradiance. While it was found that the isotropic models maintained symmetry about ϕs = π, such symmetry was not maintained about the θs = θi axis, except for close to the specular peak. This led to the development of a data-driven metric for how isotropic a BRDF measurement is. Research efforts centered around developing an algorithm that could determine material anisotropy without having to fit to models. This algorithm was tested using high …

Optical turbulence, as determined by the widely accepted practice of profiling the temperature structure constant, C2T, via the measurement of ambient atmospheric temperature gradients, can be found to differ quite significantly when characterizing such gradients via thermal-couple differential temperature sensors as compared to doing so with acoustic probes such as those commonly used in sonic anemometry. Similar inconsistencies are observed when comparing optical turbulence strength derived via C2T as compared to those through direct optical or imaging measurements of small fluctuations of the index of refraction of air (i.e., scintillation). These irregularities are especially apparent …

Non-Hermitian Physics And Engineering In Whispering Gallery Mode Microresonators, Changqing Wang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Non-Hermitian physics describes the behaviors of open systems which have interactions with the environment. It can be applied to a wide range of classical and quantum systems. Exotic physical phenomena are unveiled in such non-Hermitian systems, especially around a singular point in the parameter space, i.e., the exceptional point (EP), where the eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors are degenerate. A plethora of demonstrations have been found in optics and photonics, where the non-Hermitian effects are ubiquitous due to the existence of optical dissipation or amplification. In particular, whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators are ideal candidates for studying light-matter interactions in …

A generalization of the classic Gaussian random variable to the family of multi-Gaussian (MG) random variables characterized by shape parameter M > 0, in addition to the mean and the standard deviation, is introduced. The probability density function (PDF) of the MG family members is an alternating series of Gaussian functions with suitably chosen heights and widths. In particular, for integer values of M, the series has a finite number of terms and leads to flattened profiles, while reducing to the classic Gaussian PDF for M = 1. For non-integer, positive values of M, a convergent infinite series of …

We experimentally probe the multilevel response of GeTe, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), and 4% tungsten-doped GST (W-GST) phase change materials (PCMs) using two wavelengths of light: 1550 nm, which is useful for telecom-applications, and near-infrared 780 nm, which is a standard wavelength for many experiments in atomic and molecular physics. We find that the materials behave differently with the excitation at the different wavelengths and identify useful applications for each material and wavelength. We discuss thickness variation in the thin films used as well and comment on the interaction of the interface between the material and the substrate with regard to the …

Wavefront shaping can refocus light after it reflects from an optically rough surface. One proposed use case of this effect is in indirect imaging; if any rough surface could be turned into an illumination source, objects out of the direct line of sight could be illuminated. In this paper, we demonstrate the superior performance of a genetic algorithm compared to other iterative feedback-based wavefront shaping algorithms in achieving reflective inverse diffusion for a focal plane system. Next, the ability to control the pointing direction of the refocused beam with high precision over a narrow angular range is demonstrated, though the …

A modification to the error reduction algorithm is reported in this paper for determining the prescription of an imaging system in terms of Zernike polynomials. The technique estimates the Zernike coefficients of the optical prescription as part of a modified Gerchberg-Saxton iteration combined with a new gradient-based phase unwrapping algorithm. Zernike coefficients are updated gradually as the error reduction algorithm converges by recovering the partial pupil phase that differed from the last known pupil phase estimate. In this way the wrapped phase emerging during each iteration of the error reduction algorithm does not represent the entire wrapped phase of the …
