West Midlands Development : Development Techniques, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
West Midlands Development : Development Techniques, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Most clearing in the West Midlands is carried out by chaining, though the method chosen will depend on the country being cleared and on the resources of the farmer.
West Midlands Development : Fertilizers For The West Midlands, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
West Midlands Development : Fertilizers For The West Midlands, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FARMING the light lands of the West Midland area would be impossible without fertilisers.
Most light land areas are inherently very low in phosphate and also require nitrogen.
The nitrogen can come from fertiliser for cereal crops, or can be built up by growing appropriate legume pasture plants such as clovers and lupins.
West Midlands Development : Cereals For The West Midlands, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
West Midlands Development : Cereals For The West Midlands, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE sandplain soils and climate of the West Midlands area are primarily suited to grazing.
However, the place of cereals is receiving a great deal of attention in view of their advantages in the early stages of development, and the need for the diversification of farm production.

Production Costs In The Apple Industry : Comments On A Survey, A W. Hogstrom, I. J. Moncrieff
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN 1964 and 1965, light and heavy bearing years respectively, apples cost $2.40 per bushel to produce in Western Australia. This figure, to be considered with many other factors, was reached in a cost-of-production survey of 45 selected growers.
Packing and labour costs, in that order, were the two biggest cost-of-production items.
Subterranean Clover Establishment In The Wheatbelt, M L. Poole
Subterranean Clover Establishment In The Wheatbelt, M L. Poole
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Care and attention to detail will greatly increase the chances of establishing good subterranean clover pastures in the wheatbelt.
PASTURE ESTABLISHMENT usually takes second place to cropping in the wheatbelt, with many farmers "bunging in a bit of clover" and hoping for the best. The worst often transpires, with either patchy stands or complete failure resulting.
Using "cheap" methods of establishment is a short-sighted approach and a waste of energy and resources.
Wheat In Development Programmes For New Esperance Farmers, R J. Doyle, G. D. Oliver
Wheat In Development Programmes For New Esperance Farmers, R J. Doyle, G. D. Oliver
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN the December, 1967, issue of the Journal of Agriculture, we reported on five development budgets for the Esperance region.
The aim of the exercise was to find out if a new settler concentrating on sheep, with $20,000 available for development after acquisition of land, could make a reasonable living for himself and his family while developing his farm.

Identifying The Grain Of Barley Varieties In Western Australia, J L. Mcmullan, H. M. Fisher
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE identification of varieties of plants depends on the existence of a number of visual characters which have recognisably different forms in different varieties, but are relatively unaffected by environmental conditions.
For many species the characters of the whole plant may be required to arrive at a satisfactory identification and seed must be grown and the resulting plants compared with known varieties.

Meristic And Morphometric Data On The Flatfish Citharichthys Gilberti From Panama, C.E. Dawson
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Citharichthys gilberti Jenkins and Evermann, a common eastern Pacific flatfish, is known from Guaymas and Baja California, Mexico, south to Peru (Miller, 1966). It attains a total length of at least 260 mm (Meek and Hildebrand, 1928), frequently occurs on muddy bottoms and may enter rivers or other brackish water environments. Despite wide distribution there are apparently few literature references to the species and little is known of its life history or development. During a recent trip to the Pacific coast of Panama, C. gilberti was found to be the most abundant flatfish taken at a number of poisoned inshore …
