Articles
Many studies investigating the short-term variations associated with the power output from wind turbine generators utilise simulated or modelled data in the analysis. This current study uses short-term empirical data downloaded directly from operational wind turbines via electrical power quality meters. The empirical data shows that the short-term variations (one-second or sub-one-second timeframe) occur continuously over most of the power output range. A novel name is proposed, the Geeth Effect, for this variability phenomenon. The Geeth Effect is measured using the coefficient of variation mathematical expression and is likely contributing to (i) lower-than-expected financial and environmental benefits associated with …

The trend in electric power systems is the displacement of traditional synchronous generation (e.g., coal, natural gas) with renewable energy resources (e.g., wind, solar photovoltaic) and battery energy storage. These energy resources require power electronic converters (PECs) to interconnect to the grid and have different response characteristics and dynamic stability issues compared to conventional synchronous generators. As a result, there is a need for validated models to study and mitigate PEC-based stability issues, especially for converter dominated power systems (e.g., island power systems, remote microgrids).

Present work studies the influence of the pretreatment milling media (deionized water (BLTOS-H) and isopropanol (BLTOS-i)) on the surface characteristics, structure, chemical composition and catalytic activity of non-stoichiometric Ba2Sr2La2Ti4O12 perovskites. The IR spectroscopy and XRD analyses shows a difference in the structure and phase composition of the two materials. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy detects a Ba2+- and La3+-enriched and Sr2+-depleted surface. The BLTOS-i sample appears to exhibit higher specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume in comparison to BLTOS-H. The electrochemical tests showed that BLTOS-H sample have similar behavior to platinum at current densi-ties up to 10 mA cm-2, while BLTOS-i …

In today's interconnected power grids, forced oscillations and poorly damped low-frequency oscillations are major concerns that can damage equipment, limit power transfer capability, and deteriorate power system stability.
The first part of the dissertation focuses on the impact of a wide-area power oscillation damping (POD) controller via voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) in enhancing the power system stability and improving the damping of low-frequency oscillation. Energy companies often implement various demand response (DR) programs to better match electricity demand and supply by offering the consumers incentives to reduce their demand during critical periods. Classifying clients according to their consumption patterns enables targeting specific groups of consumers for DR. Traditional clustering algorithms use standard distance measurement to find the distance between two points. The results produced by clustering algorithms such as K-means, K-medoids, and Gaussian Mixture Models depend on the clustering parameters or initial clusters. The lack of predictability of renewable outputs deteriorates the power grid’s reliability. An online survey was administered to all educators and specialists within the University of Maryland Extension to assess client-driven opportunities and priorities for energy-related programming, while in-service training evaluations were used to further assess programmatic needs. Results indicate the need for information related to energy conservation and clean energy technology for agricultural and residential clientele. Primary barriers were perceived as the insufficient understanding and high costs associated with clean energy, while experiential participation and firsthand observation were reported as preferred learning methods. These results provide an understanding of how energy-related programming can expand the role and relevancy of Extension.

Positive Thermal Coefficients, PTCs, are materials that abruptly change in resistance in response to changes in temperature. The purpose of this experiment is to explore the viability of using the switching type ceramic PTC thermistor as a replacement for current resistive heaters. These types of PTCs have a nonlinear change in resistance with increases in temperature. A solar cell laboratory course for high school and college undergraduate students is proposed. The electrical characterization of the solar cell is performed to confirm the functionality of the device as both a diode and a power source. The efficiency of the solar cell in the illuminated condition is found to be 13.1 %. We find the efficiency of the solar cell slightly decreases as the intensity of light decreases. However, there is no significant difference in efficiency except for in the opaque condition.
