Feedback Correction Of Angular Error In Grating Readout, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sundaram Ramachandran
Feedback Correction Of Angular Error In Grating Readout, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sundaram Ramachandran
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Angular and wavelength READ beam errors in holographic interconnection systems are often a recurrent problem. Several strategies have been proposed to minimize or eliminate such READOUT misalignments.
Some years ago, Chatterjee and co-workers proposed a method involving READ beam wavelength tuning to correct output angular errors. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using an acousto-optic (A-O) Bragg cell with optoelectronic feedback to dynamically correct the scattered beam for deviations in the incidence direction of the READ beam of a hologram. The concept here is based on an acoustic frequency feedback strategy used recently by Balakshy and Kazaryan for …
The Effect Of Target Position And Tactual Recognition Field Size On Touch Bias And Accuracy, Elizabeth L. Brix
The Effect Of Target Position And Tactual Recognition Field Size On Touch Bias And Accuracy, Elizabeth L. Brix
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Past studies have shown that touchscreen display angles other than those that perpendicularly bisect the operator's line of sight cause the operator to touch slightly below the target. The amount of touch bias created from this misjudgment fluctuates according to the target's position on the screen. Additionally, the percentage of touches that activate a specific target varies according to the size of the tactual recognition field. Out of three square tactual recognition field sizes, this study sought to match these fields with the amount of touch bias occurring in each location (i.e., small amount of touch bias requires only a …
Minimum Mean Square Error Spectral Peak Envelope Estimation For Automatic Vowel Classification, Jaishree Venugopal
Minimum Mean Square Error Spectral Peak Envelope Estimation For Automatic Vowel Classification, Jaishree Venugopal
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Spectral feature computations continue to be a very difficult problem for accurate machine recognition of speech. In this work, which focuses on vowels, a new spectral peak envelope method for vowel classification is developed, based on a missing frequency components model of speech recognition. According to the missing frequency components model, vowel recognition depends only on the spectral (harmonic) peaks. Smoothing and interpolation of the spectra, performed in the standard cepstral analysis method commonly used in automatic speech recognition, actually loses valuable information and results in reduced recognition accuracy. The new method for feature extraction presented in this thesis is …

Automatic Referencing Of Satellite And Radar Images, Sreenath Srikrishnan, Roberto Araiza, Hongjie Xie, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In order to adequately process satellite and radar information, it is necessary to find the exact correspondence between different types of images and between these images and the existing maps. In other words, we need to reference these images. In this paper, we propose new methods for automatic referencing of satellite and radar images.

2-D Analogues Of Allen Interval Algebra For Image Analysis: Towards Justification, Scott A. Starks, Dima Iourinski, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In reasoning about time and duration, researchers often use Allen's Interval Algebra. This algebra describes possible relations between 1-D intervals. An interval can precede the other one, follow the other one, start the other one, etc. This algebra describes the relationship between different intervals in terms of words from natural language. To give a natural language description of 2D images, it is desirable to develop a similar approach for describing the relationship between 2-D objects in a picture. In their recent papers, Jim Keller and his collaborators proposed a new approach based on a simulation of a ``force" between these …

Reduction To Independent Variables: From Normal Distribution To General Statistical Case To Fuzzy, Mourad Oussalah, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical problems, we must combine ("fuse") data represented in different formats, e.g., statistical, fuzzy, etc. The simpler the data, the easier to combine them. Therefore, to combine complex data, it is desirable to "decompose" this complex data into simpler (easy-to-combine) data chunks.
It is well known that when we have n random variables x1, ..., xn with a joint Gaussian distribution, then we can reduce them to n independent variables by an appropriate linear transformation x1, ..., xn --> y1 = f1(x1,...,xn), ..., yn = fn(x1,...,xn). It is not so well known but also true that when we …

Localized Regression Analysis As A Method For Detecting Erroneous Measurements In Geospatial Databases, With Application To Gravity Databases, Qian Wen, Nigel Hicks, George R. Keller, Ann Q. Gates, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Geospatial databases generally consist of measurements related to points (or pixels in the case of raster data), lines, and polygons. In recent years, the size and complexity of these databases have increased significantly and they often contain erroneous measurements or noise. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting erroneous and suspicious values in a database consisting of point measurements. We use a database of measurements of anomalies in the Earth's gravity field that we have complied as a test case, and we found that the standard methods of detecting erroneous measurements - based on regression analysis - do …

Towards Automatic Detection Of Erroneous Measurement Results In A Gravity Database, Qian Wen, Ann Q. Gates, Jan Beck, Vladik Kreinovich, George R. Keller
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Geospatial databases often contain erroneous measurements. For some such databases such as gravity databases, the known methods of detecting erroneous measurements -- based on regression analysis -- do not work well. As a result, to clean such databases, experts use manual methods which are very time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a (natural) "localized" version of regression analysis as a technique for automatic cleaning. We illustrate the efficiency of this technique on the example of the gravity database.

Towards More Realistic (E.G., Non-Associative) And- And Or-Operations In Fuzzy Logic, Jesus Martinez, Leopoldo Macias, Ammar Esper, Jesus Chaparro, Vick Alvarado, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
How is fuzzy logic usually formalized? There are many seemingly reasonable requirements that a logic should satisfy: e.g., since A&B and B&A are the same, the corresponding and-operation should be commutative. Similarly, since A&A means the same as A, we should expect that the and-operation should also satisfy this property, etc. It turns out to be impossible to satisfy all these seemingly natural requirements, so usually, some requirements are picked as absolutely true (like commutativity or associativity), and others are ignored if they contradict to the picked ones. This idea leads to a neat mathematical theory, but the analysis of …

Building Object-Oriented Distributed Systems has been facilitated by Remote Message Sending (RMS) systems like Java RMI and implementations of CORBA. However, RMS systems are designed to support request/response interactions. Streaming applications, in contrast, are characterized by high-bandwidth, long-duration communication with stringent performance requirements. Examples of streaming applications include video-on-demand, teleconferencing, on-line education, and environmental observation. These applications transfer huge amounts of data and focus on distributed information flow rather than request/response.
To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow—Infopipes. Using Infopipes, information flow becomes the heart of the system, not an …

Characterizing And Calibrating A Large Helmholtz Coil At Low Ac Magnetic Field Levels With Peak Magnitudes Below The Earth's Magnetic Field, Robert A. Schill, Karin V. Hoff
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
Characterizing and calibrating a low impedance large Helmholtz coil generating 60 Hz magnetic fields with amplitudes well below the earth’s magnetic field is difficult and imprecise when coil shielding is not available and noise is an issue. Parameters influencing the calibration process such as temperature and coil impedance need to be figured in the calibration process. A simple and reliable calibration technique is developed and used to measure low amplitude fields over a spatial grid using a standard Hall effect probe gaussmeter. These low amplitude fields are typically hard or impossible to detect in the presence of background fields when …
A Cad-Mlca Interface For Next-Generation Dfe Tools, Jun He
A Cad-Mlca Interface For Next-Generation Dfe Tools, Jun He
Theses
Environmental concerns and rising product disposal costs have pressed manufactures to make more environmentally friendly products and customers to use and dispose of them in an environmental responsive way. Thus the practice of Design for Environment (DFE) is becoming essential in today's industrial environment. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides different ways for the environmental assessment of products. One critical step in performing lifecycle assessment of any product design is to collect design-related data. The common way based on manual input for traditional DFE tools is not only cumbersome and time-consuming but also error-prone.
This thesis presents the characteristics of a …
Silicon Based Ir Filters, Prakash Mokashi
Silicon Based Ir Filters, Prakash Mokashi
Theses
The design and fabrication of silicon based IR (Infrared) filters for high-speed optical communication systems are the topic of this thesis. Its novelty is in two aspects: 1) Use of silicon wafers as an optical guiding medium; 2) Use of wafer bonding technique to attach two optical elements together.
The structure consists of two optical waveguides, the bus waveguide and the drop channel waveguide. A ring on top of these waveguides couples them in such a way that only one narrow spectral line is removed from the bus waveguides which propagates in the dropchannel waveguide. The assembly is fabricated using …

Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Using A Coherent Ultrawideband Random Noise Radar System, Daryl C. Bell, Ram M. Narayanan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has developed an ultrawideband random noise radar operating over the 1- to 2-GHz frequency range. The system uses the technique of heterodyne correlation, and is thus phase coherent. It has therefore been used in applications such as interferometry, polarimetry, and Doppler estimation. This assesses the performance of this radar as a range-Doppler imaging system, in particular, inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR). By performing turntable experiments, we examine a number of issues that arise both from the wideband nature of the radar system and from the randomness of the transmit signal. Although the ultrawideband nature of the …

Can Computers Do The Job Of Nobelist Physicists? Planck Formula Revisited, Richard Alo, Raul Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
There exist several computer programs which successfully model the discovery process in science. There are successful expert systems in medicine and other areas. But one area is a real challenge for such systems: theoretical physics. The most advanced knowledge discovery programs (like BACON written under the supervision of the Nobelist Herbert A. Simon) successfully reproduce only 17, 18, and 19 century physics, but stop short of explaining the very first formula of the 20 century: Planck's law of black body radiation. This law, discovered by an insight, led to the modern Quantum Physics. The programs stop short not because the …

Overview Of Acousto-Optic Bistability, Chaos, And Logical Applications, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Erol Sonmez
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
An overview is presented of the key results in the field of acousto-optic bistability in the past two decades. It is shown that the basic acousto-optic bistable device may be described as a nonlinear dynamical system which satisfies a quadratic map. Thereafter, details are presented of several analytical methods, computer modeling approaches, including the SPICE circuit modeling technique, and experiments that have been used to understand the phenomenon.
Extensions to logical and digital applications are also discussed.

Aspect Sensitivity Measurements Of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes Using Coherent Radar Imaging, P. B. Chilson, T.-Y. Yu, R. D. Palmer, S. Kirkwood
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The Esrange VHF radar (ESRAD), located in northern Sweden (67.88) N, 21.10- E), has been used to investigate polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE). During July and August of 1998, coherent radar imaging (CRI) was used to study the dynamic evolution of PMSE with high temporal and spatial resolution. A CRI analysis provides an estimate of the angular brightness distribution within the radar’s probing volume. The brightness distribution is directly related to the radar reflectivity. Consequently, these data are used to investigate the aspect sensitivity of PMSE. In addition to the CRI analysis, the full correlation analysis (FCA) is used to …

Which Truth Values In Fuzzy Logics Are Definable?, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Antonio Di Nola
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In fuzzy logic, every word or phrase describing uncertainty is represented by a real number from the interval [0,1]. There are only denumerable many words and phrases, and continuum many real numbers; thus, not every real number corresponds to some commonsense degree of uncertainty. In this paper, for several fuzzy logic, we describe which numbers are describing such degrees, i.e., in mathematical terms, which real numbers are definable in the corresponding fuzzy logic.
Computational Complexity Of Planning With Temporal Goals, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich, Raul A. Trejo
Computational Complexity Of Planning With Temporal Goals, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich, Raul A. Trejo
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the last decade, there has been several studies on the computational complexity of planning. These studies normally assume that the goal of planning is to make a certain fluent true after the sequence of actions. In many real-life planning problems, the goal is represented in a much more complicated temporal form: e.g., in addition to having a desired fluent true at the end, we may want to keep certain fluents true at all times. In this paper, we study the complexity of planning for such temporal goals. We show that for goals expressible in Linear Temporal Logic, planning has …

Interval Computations As A Particular Case Of A General Scheme Involving Classes Of Probability Distributions, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Vladik Kreinovich, Harry Schulte
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditionally, in science and engineering, measurement uncertainty is characterized by a probability distribution; however, we don't know this probability distribution exactly, so we must consider classes of probability distributions. Interval computations deal with a very specific type of such classes: classes of all distributions which are located on a given interval. We show that in general, we need all convex classes of probability distributions.
