Simulated Annealing Algorithm-Based Elman Network For Dynamic System Identification, Adem Kalinli
Simulated Annealing Algorithm-Based Elman Network For Dynamic System Identification, Adem Kalinli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the well-known recurrent neural networks is the Elman network. Recently, it has been used in applications of system identification. The network has feedforward and feedback connections. It can be trained essentially as a feedforward network by means of the basic backpropagation algorithm, but its feedback connections have to be kept constant. For training success, it is important to select the correct values for the feedback connections. However, finding these values manually can be a lengthy trial-and-error process. This paper investigates the use of the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to obtain the weight values of both the feedforward and …
A New Formulation Method For Solving Kinematic Problems Of Multiarm Robot Systems Using Quaternion Algebra In The Screw Theory Framework, Emre Sariyildiz, Hakan Temeltaş
A New Formulation Method For Solving Kinematic Problems Of Multiarm Robot Systems Using Quaternion Algebra In The Screw Theory Framework, Emre Sariyildiz, Hakan Temeltaş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We present a new formulation method to solve the kinematic problem of multiarm robot systems. Our major aims were to formulize the kinematic problem in a compact closed form and avoid singularity problems in the inverse kinematic solution. The new formulation method is based on screw theory and quaternion algebra. Screw theory is an effective way to establish a global description of a rigid body and avoids singularities due to the use of the local coordinates. The dual quaternion, the most compact and efficient dual operator to express screw displacement, was used as a screw motion operator to obtain the …

Noncausal Forward/Backward Two-Pass Iir Digital Filters In Real Time, Adnane Mouffak, Belbachir Mohamed Faouzi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A novel method for implementing noncausal forward/backward 2-pass recursive digital filters in real time is presented. It is based on a segment-wise block processing scheme without overlapping. Factors that degrade the linearity of the overall system's transfer function are discussed. An analytical condition that corrects the system's linearity is elaborated upon using the state variable approach. A recursive algorithm is developed to compute an implementable condition for real-time filtering. A single first in, first out queue memory is introduced to ensure an organized and continuous data stream into the proposed system. This technique allows real-time, sample-by-sample filtering, and it yields …

A Hybrid Approach For Power Quality Monitoring, Okan Özgönenel, Ümi̇t Kemaletti̇n Terzi̇, Abdesh Khan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a novel hybrid approach for detection of power quality (PQ) disturbances. The proposed hybrid algorithm is based on applications of principle component analysis, discrete wavelet transform, and fast Fourier transform on voltage and current waveforms. The proposed PQ monitoring (PQM) software uses 3-phase voltage and current signals in order to detect possible power disturbances such as voltage sag, flicker, harmonics, transients, DC component, and electromagnetic interference. The test results demonstrate the potential of the proposed hybrid technique for PQM andPQ assessment.
Vibration Analysis Of Base Structure On Sins Using Pzt Actuators, Bin Zheng, Jianfeng Yang
Vibration Analysis Of Base Structure On Sins Using Pzt Actuators, Bin Zheng, Jianfeng Yang
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A steel plate bonded with lead zirconate titanate (PZT) actuators was studied on the basis of finite element methods (FEMs). The damping amplitudes of this plate bonded with PZT actuators were obtained at different locations and under different control conditions by analyzing the distribution of the PZT plate's strain tensor in the first 4 modes. Furthermore, to reduce the unwanted disturbance and mitigate the errors from sensors, a base structure of the missile's strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) is also proposed. The results show that the vibration control can be enhanced by increasing the number of the PZT actuators bonded. …

Skewed Alpha-Stable Distributions For Modeling And Classification Of Musical Instruments, Mehmet Erdal Özbek, Mehmet Emre Çek, Feri̇t Acar Savaci
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Music information retrieval and particularly musical instrument classification has become a very popular research area for the last few decades. Although in the literature many feature sets have been proposed to represent the musical instrument sounds, there is still need to find a superior feature set to achieve better classification performance. In this paper, we propose to use the parameters of skewed alpha-stable distribution of sub-band wavelet coefficients of musical sounds as features and show the effectiveness of this new feature set for musical instrument classification. We compare the classification performance with the features constructed from the parameters of generalized …

A Pseudo Spot Price Of Electricity Algorithm Applied To Environmental Economic Active Power Dispatch Problem, Celal Yaşar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, an environmental economic active power dispatch problem is transformed into an optimization problem with a single-objective function by applying the weighted sum method (WSM) and the conic scalarization method (CSM). A pseudo spot price of electricity algorithm (PSPA) is used to solve the transformed problem. This is demonstrated on an example problem, which is a lossy electrical power system having only thermal units The WSM and CSM methods are applied to the example problem, and the weight factor values of these methods is increased from 0 to 1 by a step size of 0.1. For each possible …

Optimal In Vitro Realization Of Pulsatile Coronary Artery Flow Waveforms Using Closed-Loop Feedback Algorithms With Multiple Flow Control Devices, Serdar Yilmaz, Onur Toker, Nurullah Arslan, Herman Sedef
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we study optimal in vitro realization of pulsatile coronary artery flows using newly proposed closed-loop feedback algorithms with a clearly defined mathematical performance objective, and we compare several flow control device technologies in terms of their ability to generate pulsatile flow signals as accurately as possible. In the literature, there are several published results for in vitro pulsatile flow realization systems. However, most of the proposed systems operate in an open-loop setting and use a single flow control device, and their performance is assessed mostly by graphical means without a clearly defined mathematical performance objective. Furthermore, some …

A Novel Approach For Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generations Based On Static Voltage Stability Margin, Mohsen Rezaie Estabragh, Mohsen Mohammadian, Mehdi Shafiee
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a newly developed approach to find the optimal location of distributed generations (DGs) to improve power system voltage stability margin and reduce losses incorporating the constraints. The loadability limit index is used to assess the static voltage stability security margin, which is associated with the point of voltage collapse limit. Based on this, a toolbox is developed to recognize the loadability margin in power networks. Finally, the mentioned problem is modeled as a nonlinear and multiobjective optimization problem. The proposed method establishes a tradeoff between the security index and power losses in DG placement using the hybrid …

A Novel Motor Speed Calculation Method Using Square Wave Speed Sensor Signals Via Fast Fourier Transform, Hayri̇ Arabaci, Osman Bi̇lgi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a novel motor speed measurement method and experimental results using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Motor speed is obtained using the square wave output signal of a speed sensor. In the proposed method, the speed can be measured in a wide range, and transient speed changes can also be clearly observed. The experiments were conducted during start-up and in steady state. The sampled speed data were transformed to frequency spectrums using the FFT. The frequency, which corresponds to the maximum amplitude in the spectrum, was used to calculate the motor speed. The test results show that the …

Voltage Stability Via Energy Function Analysis On Reduced Order Model Of Power System, Ahmet Çi̇fci̇, Yilmaz Uyaroğlu, Mehmet Ali̇ Yalçin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A power system is a typical nonlinear dynamical system and voltage stability is an important subject of power system stability. This paper describes the use of the variable gradient method in a reduced order model of a single-machine infinite-bus power system. Additionally, the system's Lyapunov (energy) function is created and thus the system's energy level changes' effects on the system's stability are shown using the MACSYMA program. The Lyapunov function allows the determination of stability for nonlinear systems without the need to find exact solutions.

Analysis And Characterization Of Longitudinal Flux Single-Sided Linear Switched Reluctance Machines, Lenin Chokkalingam, Arumugam Rengasamy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Linear switched reluctance motors (LSRMs) have recently gained more popularity for propulsion drives. This paper contributes a certain design improvement to reduce the force ripple in LSRMs. By affixing a pole cap in the stator pole, the target is achieved. Finite element analysis has been carried out to predict the performance of the basic and proposed structures. Motor performances for different load conditions are simulated. The application of fast Fourier transform has been utilized to envisage the vibration frequencies. The experimental results are well correlated with the predicted results.

Completeness For The Coalgebraic Cover Modality, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Yde Venema
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
We study the finitary version of the coalgebraic logic introduced by L. Moss. The syntax of this logic, which is introduced uniformly with respect to a coalgebraic type functor, required to preserve weak pullbacks, extends that of classical propositional logic with a so-called coalgebraic cover modality depending on the type functor. Its semantics is defined in terms of a categorically defined relation lifting operation.
As the main contributions of our paper we introduce a derivation system, and prove that it provides a sound and complete axiomatization for the collection of coalgebraically valid inequalities. Our soundness and completeness proof is algebraic, …

Coalgebraic Logics (Dagstuhl Seminar 12411), Ernst-Erich Doberkat, Alexander Kurz
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12411 “Coalgebraic Logics”. The seminar deals with recent developments in the area of coalgebraic logic, a branch of logics which combines modal logics with coalgebraic semantics. Modal logic finds its uses when reasoning about behavioural and temporal properties of computation and communication, coalgebras have evolved into a general theory of systems. Consequently, it is natural to combine both areas for a mathematical description of system specification. Coalgebraic logics are closely related to the broader categories semantics/formal methods and verification/logic.

A Suspended Nanogap Formed By Field-Induced Atomically Sharp Tips, Jun Hyun Han, Kyung Song, Shankar Radhakrishnan, Sang Ho Oh, Chung Hoon Lee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A sub-nanometer scale suspended gap (nanogap) defined by electric field-induced atomically sharp metallic tips is presented. A strong local electric field (>109 V=m) across micro/nanomachined tips facing each other causes the metal ion migration in the form of dendrite-like growth at the cathode. The nanogap is fully isolated from the substrate eliminating growth mechanisms that involve substrate interactions. The proposed mechanism of ion transportation is verified using real-time imaging of the metal ion transportation using an in situ biasing in transmission electron microscope (TEM). The configuration of the micro/nanomachined suspended tips allows nanostructure growth of a wide variety of …

Reports to date of GaN HEMTs subjected to forward gate bias stress include varied extents of degradation. We report an extremely robust GaN HEMT technology that survived—contrary to conventional wisdom—high forward gate bias (+6 V) and current (>1.8 A/mm) for >17.5 hours exhibiting only a slight change in gate diode characteristic, little decrease in maximum drain current, with only a 0.1 V positive threshold voltage shift, and, remarkably, a persisting breakdown voltage exceeding 200 V.

A piezoelectric Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) cantilever pressure sensor was designed, modeled, fabricated, and tested for sensing the photoacoustic response of gases to terahertz (THz) radiation. The sensing layers were comprised of three thin films; a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric layer sandwiched between two metal contact layers. The sensor materials were deposited on the silicon device layer of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer, which formed the physical structure of the cantilever. To release the cantilever, a hole was etched through the backside of the wafer and the buried oxide was removed with hydrofluoric acid. Devices were then tested in a custom …
Multiplication Theory For Dynamically Biased Avalanche Photodiodes: New Limits For Gain Bandwidth Product, Majeed M. Hayat, David A. Ramirez
Multiplication Theory For Dynamically Biased Avalanche Photodiodes: New Limits For Gain Bandwidth Product, Majeed M. Hayat, David A. Ramirez
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Novel theory is developed for the avalanche multiplication process in avalanche photodiodes (APDs) under time-varying reverse-biasing conditions. Integral equations are derived characterizing the statistics of the multiplication factor and the impulse-response function of APDs, as well as their breakdown probability, all under the assumption that the electric field driving the avalanche process is time varying and spatially nonuniform. Numerical calculations generated by the model predict that by using a bit-synchronous sinusoidal biasing scheme to operate the APD in an optical receiver, the pulse-integrated gain-bandwidth product can be improved by a factor of 5 compared to the same APD operating under …

Real-Time Localization Using Received Signal Strength, Mohammed Rana Basheer
Doctoral Dissertations
"Locating and tracking assets in an indoor environment is a fundamental requirement for several applications which include for instance network enabled manufacturing. However, translating time of flight-based GPS technique for indoor solutions has proven very costly and inaccurate primarily due to the need for high resolution clocks and the non-availability of reliable line of sight condition between the transmitter and receiver. In this dissertation, localization and tracking of wireless devices using radio signal strength (RSS) measurements in an indoor environment is undertaken. This dissertation is presented in the form of five papers.
The first two papers deal with localization and …

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In nuclear physics, the phrase decay rate is used to denote the rate that atoms and other particles spontaneously decompose. Uranium-235 famously decays into a variety of daughter isotopes including Thorium and Neptunium, which themselves decay to others. Decay rates are widely observed and wildly different depending on many factors, both internal and external. U-235 has a half-life of 703,800,000 years, for example, while free neutrons have a half-life of 611 seconds and neutrons in an atomic nucleus are stable.

Technology Corner Automated Data Extraction Using Facebook, Nick V. Flor
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Because of Facebook’s popularity, law enforcement agents often use it as a key source of evidence. But like many user digital trails, there can be a large amount of data to extract for analysis. In this paper, we explore the basics of extracting data programmatically from a user’s Facebook via a Web app. A data extraction app requests data using the Facebook Graph API, and Facebook returns a JSON object containing the data. Before an app can access a user’s Facebook data, the user must log into Facebook and give permission. Thus, this approach is limited to situations where users …

The book is available as a paperback and e-book. The e-book versions allow you to preview several chapters at any of a number of online vendors. The e-book prices vary from the same as the soft cover version ($59.99) to about $38.99. Some of the vendor's e-books retain the color illustrations found in the print version, but others produce them in grey scale, so you might want to look out for that. The book is divided into four parts (17 chapters) plus two appendices.
I am compelled to give the book illustrations a highly unfavorable assessment regarding their readability qualities. …

An Australian Perspective On The Challenges For Computer And Network Security For Novice Endusers, Patryk Szewczyk
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
It is common for end-users to have difficulty in using computer or network security appropriately and thus have often been ridiculed when misinterpreting instructions or procedures. This discussion paper details the outcomes of research undertaken over the past six years on why security is overly complex for endusers. The results indicate that multiple issues may render end-users vulnerable to security threats and that there is no single solution to address these problems. Studies on a small group of senior citizens has shown that educational seminars can be beneficial in ensuring that simple security aspects are understood and used appropriately.

One area of particular concern for computer forensics examiners involves situations in which someone utilized software applications to destroy evidence. There are products available in the marketplace that are relatively inexpensive and advertised as being able to destroy targeted portions of data stored within a computer system. This study was undertaken to analyze a subset of these tools in order to identify trace evidence, if any, left behind on disk media after executing these applications. We evaluated five Windows 7 compatible software products whose advertised features include the ability for users to wipe targeted files, folders, or evidence of selected …
