The Effect Of Fault Current Limiter Size And Type On Current Limitation In The Presence Of Distributed Generation, Reza Mohammadi Chabanloo, Ehsan Mokhtarpour Habashi, Meysam Farrokhifar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

One of the effective mitigation solutions of the problems due to the penetration of distributed generation (DG) into the distribution network is a fault current limiter (FCL). Main attention is given to designs for resistive and inductive FCLs and others should meet the same requirements. At first in this paper network analysis is used to determine a suitable type of limiting impedance of a FCL in a distribution network in the presence of DG and then a comparative study of resistive, inductive, and complex FCLs is conducted to show the effect of size and type of FCL on the amplitude …

Single Event Multiple Upset-Tolerant Sram Cell Designs For Nano-Scale Cmos Technology, Ramin Rajaei, Bahar Asgari, Mahmoud Tabandeh, Mahdi Fazeli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article, two soft error tolerant SRAM cells, the so-called RATF1 and RATF2, are proposed and evaluated. The proposed radiation hardened SRAM cells are capable of fully tolerating single event upsets (SEUs). Moreover, they show a high degree of robustness against single event multiple upsets (SEMUs). Over the previous SRAM cells, RATF1 and RATF2 offer lower area and power overhead. The Hspice simulation results through comparison with some prominent and state-of-the-art soft error tolerant SRAM cells show that our proposed robust SRAM cells have smaller area overhead (RAFT1 offers 58% smaller area than DICE), lower power delay product (RATF1 …

Universal And Stable Medical Image Generation For Tissue Segmentation (The Unistable Method), Ihab Elaff, Ali El-Kemany, Mohammed Kholif

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Segmentation of medical images has been one of the most important research areas because of its impact in modeling and diagnosing the structure and the functions of various organs. The lack of unique solution for the segmentation problem of medical images is caused by the wide range of selections among different medical imaging modalities and clustering methods where each setting has its own estimates for solving this problem. The unistable method is a novel method that generates enhanced images with high contrast, which can reduce boundary overlap between different tissues. This is accomplished by fusion of different clustering maps, which …

Enhanced Hybrid Method Of Divide-And-Conquer And Rbf Neural Networks For Function Approximation Of Complex Problems, Mohammed Awad Jan 2017

Enhanced Hybrid Method Of Divide-And-Conquer And Rbf Neural Networks For Function Approximation Of Complex Problems, Mohammed Awad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper provides an enhanced method focused on reducing the computational complexity of function approximation problems by dividing the input data vectors into small groups, which avoids the curse of dimensionality. The computational complexity and memory requirements of the approximated problem are higher when the input data dimensionality increases. A divide-and-conquer algorithm is used to distribute the input data of the complex problem to a divided radial basis function neural network (Div-RBFNN). Under this algorithm, the input data variables are typically distributed to different RBFNNs based on whether the number of the input data dimensions is odd or even. In …

Iris Nevus Diagnosis: Convolutional Neural Network And Deep Belief Network, Oyebade Oyedotun, Adnan Khashman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work presents the diagnosis of iris nevus using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and deep belief network (DBN). Iris nevus is a pigmented growth (tumor) found in the front of the eye or around the pupil. It is seen that racial and environmental factors affect the iris color (e.g., blue, hazel, brown) of patients; hence, pigmented growths may be masked in the eye background or iris. In this work, some image processing techniques are applied to images to reinforce areas of interests in them, after which the considered classifiers are trained. We describe the automated diagnosis of iris nevus …

Reversible logic has emerged as a promising paradigm in various domains, such as low power VLSI design, quantum cellular automata, and nanotechnology-based systems. The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is one of the main components of any central processing unit. In this paper we propose two new reversible ALUs using elementary quantum gates, with more functions compared to the existing designs. The results show that the proposed designs are better than the existing counterparts in terms of cost-metrics and the number of functions generated. The proposed reversible ALUs can be used in the implementation of quantum computers. All the designs are …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents new CMOS current-mode ladder Chebyshev and elliptic band-pass filters (BPFs). The signal flow graph and the network transformation methods are used to synthesize the proposed BPFs by using Chebyshev and elliptic RLC low-pass prototypes. CMOS-based lossy and lossless integrators with grounded capacitors are used to synthesize the proposed BPFs. The proposed filters can be electronically tuned between 10 kHz and 100 MHz by adjusting the bias current from 0.02 $\mu $A to 200 $\mu $A. Both filters use a 1.5 V DC power supply, which leads to low dynamic power consumption. Both filters enjoy total harmonic distortion …

An Inductorless Wideband Lna With A New Noise Canceling Technique, Pouria Pazhouhesh Moghadam, Adib Abrishamifar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An inductorless wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA) employing a new noise canceling technique for multistandard applications is presented. The main amplifier has a cascode common gate structure, which provides good input impedance matching and isolation. The proposed noise canceling technique not only improves the noise figure and power gain but also embeds a g$_{m}$-boosting technique in itself, which reduces the power consumption of the main amplifier. Using current-steering and current-reuse techniques in the noise canceling branch makes the design realizable and low power. The proposed LNA is simulated and optimized in 0.13 $\mu $m CMOS technology. The LNA achieves a noise …

Advanced Probabilistic Power Flow Methodology For Power Systems With Renewable Resources, Dinh Duong Le, Nhi Thi Ai Nguyen, Van Duong Ngo, Alberto Berizzi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Renewable~resources have added additional uncertainty to power grids. Deterministic power flow does not provide sufficient information for power system calculation and analysis, since all sources of uncertainty are not taken into account. To handle uncertainties PPF has been introduced and used as an efficient tool. In this paper, we present a cumulant-based PPF approach that can account for various sources of uncertainty in power systems with renewable resources such as wind and photovoltaic energy. We also propose the use of a new methodology to estimate probability distribution for wind power output based on measured data. The proposed approach is carried …

With increasing population, the determination of traffic density becomes critical in managing urban city roads for safer driving and low carbon emissions. In this study, kernel density estimation is utilized in order to estimate traffic density more accurately when the speeds of vehicles are available for a given region. For the proposed approach, as a first step, the probability density function of the speed data is modeled by kernel density estimation. Then the speed centers from the density function are modeled as clusters. The cumulative distribution function of the speed data is then determined by Kolmogorov--Smirnov test, whose complexity is …

Implementation Of A Flywheel Energy Storage System For Space Applications, Reşat Çeli̇kel, Mehmet Özdemi̇r, Ömür Aydoğmuş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A satellite power system requires solar panels to provide energy and orientation. There are two regions in the orbital path of the satellite: the dark and bright region. The energy is provided by solar panels in the bright region and by flywheel energy storage system (FESS) in the dark region. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are widely used in the FESS due to their low weight, high power density, high efficiency, high reliability, and high speed. Some mechanical resonances may occur due to physical features of the mechanical parts. Therefore, the current of the BLDC is dramatically increased because of the …

Maximum Size Of The Pareto Cost Sets For Multi-Constrained Optimal Routing, Derya Yiltaş Kaplan Jan 2017

Maximum Size Of The Pareto Cost Sets For Multi-Constrained Optimal Routing, Derya Yiltaş Kaplan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Routing under multiple independent constrains in point-to-point networks has been studied for over 10 years. Its NP-hardness keeps pushing researchers to study approximate algorithms and heuristics, and many results have been published in these years. To the best of our knowledge, the nature of its average case has been explored only for the self-adaptive multiple constraints routing algorithm (SAMCRA), which is an algorithm about multiple constraints routing. In this paper, we simplify SAMCRA into a format that is convenient for our average case analysis. This variant algorithm gives optimal solutions also for very large dimensional networks such as with more …

Assessing The Importance Of Features For Detection Of Hard Exudates In Retinal Images, Kemal Akyol, Baha Şen, Şafak Bayir, Hasan Basri̇ Çakmak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Diabetes disrupts the operation of the eye and leads to vision loss, affecting particularly the nerve layer and capillary vessels in this layer by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.~Suddenly loss and blurred vision problems occur in the image, depending on the phase of the disease, called diabetic retinopathy. Hard exudates are one of the primary signs of diabetic retinopathy. Automatic recognition of hard exudates in retinal images can contribute to detection of the disease. We present an automatic screening system for the detection of hard exudates. This system consists of two main steps. Firstly, the features were …

This method of committing the units yields the least-cost solution when applied to the IEEE 10-unit systems and 7-unit Indian utility practical systems scheduled for 24 h and the …

Dvcc-Based Floating Capacitance Multiplier Design, Hali̇l Alpaslan Jan 2017

Dvcc-Based Floating Capacitance Multiplier Design, Hali̇l Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a floating capacitance multiplier including two multioutput differential voltage current conveyors, two grounded resistors, and a grounded capacitor is proposed. The proposed floating capacitance multiplier can realize high capacitor values with two small-valued resistors. It is more suitable for integrated circuit technology because it has only grounded passive components without needing any critical passive component matching conditions. Its performances are examined with several simulations using the SPICE program. As an application example, a third-order notch filter using three resistors and three capacitors is given.

Fault-tolerant controller (FTC) designs for doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) with actuator faults have recently gained considerable attention due to their important role in maintaining the safety and reliability of DFIG-based wind turbines via configured redundancy. The objective of this paper is to propose a novel active fault-tolerant tracking control strategy for a DFIG subject to actuator faults. The proposed strategy consists of first designing a proportional integral observer (PIO) for simultaneous system states and fault estimation and then secondly the FTC, which depends on the estimated states and faults. The objective of such a controller is to drive the …

Vector Control Of Unbalanced 3-Phase Im Using Forward And Backward Components, Mohammad Jannati, Nik Rumzi Nik Idris Jan 2017

Vector Control Of Unbalanced 3-Phase Im Using Forward And Backward Components, Mohammad Jannati, Nik Rumzi Nik Idris

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In some industries, continuous operation of 3-phase induction motors (IMs) even under faults until the scheduled maintenance time is essential. Conventional control techniques such as field-oriented control (FOC) cannot be used to control faulty IMs since this will result in significant oscillations in the speed and torque. Consequently, a new control approach must be developed for improving IM performance during fault conditions. This paper presents a method for vector control of 3-phase IMs under open-phase faults. The main advantage of this control scheme is its ability to handle not only one phase but also two phases of open-phase fault conditions. …

Energy-Hole Avoidance And Lifetime Enhancement Of A Wsn Through Load Factor, Krishna Pal Sharma, Teek Parval Sharma Jan 2017

Energy-Hole Avoidance And Lifetime Enhancement Of A Wsn Through Load Factor, Krishna Pal Sharma, Teek Parval Sharma

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In wireless sensor networks, nonuniform communication load across a network often leads to the problem of energy holes or hot spots, i.e. nodes nearer high activity regions deplete their energy much faster than nodes elsewhere. This may partition the network into unreachable segments and thus adversely affect network lifetime. The problem is more acute in random and sparsely deployed networks. Therefore, we propose a deployment strategy that, using the least possible nodes, prolongs network lifetime by avoiding energy holes and also ensures full sensing and communication coverage. The scheme handles the energy imbalance by selecting an appropriate set of communication …

Rapidly Converging Solution For P-Centers In Nonconvex Regions, Monika Mangla, Deepak Garg

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper aims to locate $p$ resources in a nonconvex demand plane having $n $demand points. The objective of the location problem is to find the location for these $p$ resources so that the distance from each of $n$ demand points to its nearest resource is minimized, thus simulating a $p$-center problem. We employ various geometrical structures for solving this location problem. The suggested approach is also capable of finding the optimal value of $p$ so that all demand points have at least one resource at a distance $\Delta $, where $\Delta $ is the maximum permissible distance for emergency …
