Probabilistic Data Fusion Model For Heart Beat Detection From Multimodal Physiological Data, Tehseen Zia, Zulqarnian Arif
Probabilistic Data Fusion Model For Heart Beat Detection From Multimodal Physiological Data, Tehseen Zia, Zulqarnian Arif
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Automatic detection of heart beats constitutes the basis for electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis and mainly relies on detecting QRS complexes. Detection is typically performed by analyzing the ECG signal. However, when signal quality is low, it often leads to the triggering of false alarms. A contemporary approach to reduce false alarm rate is to use multimodal data such as arterial blood pressure (ABP) or photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals. To leverage the correlated temporal nature of these signals, a probabilistic data fusion model for heart beat detection is proposed. A hidden Markov model is used to decode waveforms into segments. A Bayesian network …

A New Efficient Block Matching Data Hiding Method Based On Scanning Order Selection In Medical Images, Turgay Aydoğan, Cüneyt Bayilmiş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Digital technology and the widespread use of the Internet has increased the speeds at which digital data can be obtained and shared in daily life. In parallel to this, there are important concerns regarding the confidentiality of private data during data transmissions and the possibility that data might fall into the hands of third parties. Issues relating to data safety can also affect patients' medical images and other information relating to these images. In this study, we propose a new method based on block matching that can be used to hide the patient information in medical images. In this method, …

Performance Comparison Of Axial-Flux-Modulated Motor With Two Pole-Slot Combinations, Huijuan Liu, Yue Hao, Weinong Fu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Axial-flux-modulated motors (AFMMs) with two pole-slot combinations are presented and analyzed quantitatively. They all have new topology structures, and their design rules differ from those of the traditional machine. The concentrated stator windings are designed to reduce the end length and copper losses; therefore, the efficiency of the motors can be improved. Special iron segments in the air-gap are used to modulate the magnetic field. The two proposed AFMMs have 36 stator slots and 30 stator slots, respectively, and the pole-slot combinations are 6 poles for 36 slots and 4 poles for 30 slots. This paper focuses on the comparative …
Adaptive Control Of Pure-Feedback Systems In The Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Mehrnoosh Asadi, Heydar Toossian Shandiz
Adaptive Control Of Pure-Feedback Systems In The Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Mehrnoosh Asadi, Heydar Toossian Shandiz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The purpose of this study is to investigate an adaptive control approach for completely nonaffine pure-feedback systems with linear/nonlinear parameterization. In this approach, the parameter separation technique and the idea of the positive function of linearly connected parameters are coupled effectively with the combination of backstepping and time-scale separation. Subsequently, a fast dynamical equation is derived from the original subsystem, where the solution is sought to approximate the corresponding ideal virtual/actual control inputs. Furthermore, the adaptation law of unknown parameters can be derived based on Lyapunov theory in the backstepping technique and there is no need to design a state …
A Data-Aware Cognitive Engine For Scheduling Data Intensive Applications In A Grid, Vijaya Nagarajan, Maluk Mohamed Mulk Abdul
A Data-Aware Cognitive Engine For Scheduling Data Intensive Applications In A Grid, Vijaya Nagarajan, Maluk Mohamed Mulk Abdul
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Data-intensive applications produce huge amounts of data that need to be stored, analyzed, and interpreted. A data grid serves as a cost-effective infrastructure for solving these data-intensive applications. Existing scheduling strategies are best suited for handling compute-intensive applications, although they lack in performance while handling data-intensive applications. In this work, a novel mechanism of incorporating cognitive science in a data grid is proposed for scheduling data-intensive workflows. A unique model is derived in which a cognitive engine (CE) is built into the middleware of the data grid. The intelligent agents present in the CE handle the request for data sets …

Design Of A Three-Phase Multistage Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator For Wind Turbine Applications, Muhammad Mansoor Ashraf, Tahir Nadeem Malik
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Presently, axial flux permanent magnet machines are becoming popular and are being deployed actively for low speed applications. This paper presents an improved model of a multistage axial flux permanent magnet generator (AFPMG). The multistage AFPMG consists of multiple stator and rotor discs. There are three identical 1-phase stator discs and four in-phase rotor discs in the proposed multistage AFPMG. In this research, 4 case studies were analyzed on the design of the multistage AFPMG. First, a phase shift model (PSM) positions the three 1-phase stator discs to behave as a 3-phase generator. Actually, the PSM computes phases for three …
Adslanf: A Negotiation Framework For Cloud Management Systems Using A Bulk Negotiation Behavioral Learning Approach, Rajkumar Rajavel, Mala Thangarathinam
Adslanf: A Negotiation Framework For Cloud Management Systems Using A Bulk Negotiation Behavioral Learning Approach, Rajkumar Rajavel, Mala Thangarathinam
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the major challenges in cloud computing is the development of a service-level agreement (SLA) negotiation framework using an intelligent third-party broker negotiation strategy. Current frameworks exploit various negotiation strategies using game theoretic, heuristic, and argumentation-based approaches for obtaining optimal negotiation with a better success rate (negotiation commitment). However, these approaches fail to optimize the negotiation round (NR), total negotiation time (TNT), and communication overhead (CO) involved in the negotiation strategy. To overcome these problems, certain researchers have exploited trade-off, concession, and behavioral learning strategies with varying degrees of sacrifices (reductions) in their concerned proposal generation. Such sacrifices can …

Transmission Power Control Using State Estimation-Based Received Signal Strength Prediction For Energy Efficiency In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ramakrishnan Sabitha, Krishna Bhuma, Thangavelu Thyagarajan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In battery-operated wireless sensor networks, the quality of service requirements such as throughput and energy efficiency must be stringently maintained while the least amount of energy is consumed. Since a major portion of energy is spent by the transceiver operations, transmission power control (TPC) in the medium access control (MAC) layer can bring about considerable energy efficiency. Since TPC algorithms will have a direct impact on the received signal strength index (RSSI) at the receiver, RSSI is the primary input parameter for any TPC algorithm. The objective of the proposed work is to decide on the exact value of transmission …

The measurement bench consists of two major parts: hardware and software. The hardware part comprises a programmable function generator MTX-3240, an electronic card for the magnetic induction's waveform control, and an NI PCI-6225 acquisition card. The software part is developed in the LabVIEW environment to enable the generator and the acquisition card control. It also allows for the processing of obtained experimental records and the correction of static errors. The identified characteristics are mainly the first magnetization curve, …
Pseudorandom Number Generator Based On Arnold Cat Map And Statistical Analysis, Erdi̇nç Avaroğlu
Pseudorandom Number Generator Based On Arnold Cat Map And Statistical Analysis, Erdi̇nç Avaroğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) generate random bit streams based on deterministic algorithms. Any bit stream generated with a PRNG will repeat itself at a certain point, and the bit streams will become correlated. As a result, all bit streams generated in this manner are statistically weak. Such weakness leads to a strong connection between PRNGs and chaos, which is characterized by ergodicity, confusion, complexity, sensitivity to initial conditions, and dependence on control parameters. In this study, we introduce a PRNG that generates bit sequences by sampling two Arnold cat map outputs. The statistical randomness of bit streams obtained using this …
A New Approach For Digital Image Watermarking To Predict Optimal Blocks Using Artificial Neural Networks, Raheleh Khorsand Movaghar, Hossein Khaleghi Bizaki
A New Approach For Digital Image Watermarking To Predict Optimal Blocks Using Artificial Neural Networks, Raheleh Khorsand Movaghar, Hossein Khaleghi Bizaki
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we propose a novel nonblind digital image watermarking based on discrete wavelet transform and singular value decomposition. This robust scheme takes advantage of artificial neural networks for selecting suitable image blocks in which the watermark signal can be embedded. Local characteristics of the blocks such as luminance and texture sensitivity are the main criteria that the selections are based on. Generally, selection is based on a prediction of the results with the objective of transparency and watermark resilience. In other words, before embedding the water mark signal, it is estimated which blocks would be the best for …

Mutual Correlation Of Nist Statistical Randomness Tests And Comparison Of Their Sensitivities On Transformed Sequences, Ali̇ Doğanaksoy, Fati̇h Sulak, Muhi̇ddi̇n Uğuz, Okan Şeker, Zi̇ya Akcengi̇z
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Random sequences are widely used in many cryptographic applications and hence their generation is one of the main research areas in cryptography. Statistical randomness tests are introduced to detect the weaknesses or nonrandom characteristics that a sequence under consideration may have. In the literature, there exist various statistical randomness tests and test suites, defined as a collection of tests. An efficient test suite should consist of a number of uncorrelated statistical tests each of which measures randomness from another point of view. `Being uncorrelated' is not a well-defined or well-understood concept in the literature. In this work, we apply Pearson's …

A Power Sharing Control For Microgrids Based On Extrapolation Of Injecting Power And Power-Angle Control, Suchart Janjornmanit, Suttichai Premrudeepreechacharn
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Droop controlled power sharing with an assumption that the value of line impedance is unavailable has been proven to have limitations; the power sharing is problematic in systems with significantly resistive lines. Furthermore, when the droop is applied in the islanding mode of operation of a microgrid, the system is likely to become unstable. In this paper, the droop control is replaced by an analytical solution. The proposed approach of power sharing is power-angle control of distributed generators (DGs), such as voltage source converters, a type of DG with extrapolation of power injected to the connected bus. It is demonstrated …

Hadoop Framework Implementation And Performance Analysis On A Cloud, Göksu Zeki̇ye Özen, Mehmet Tekerek, Rayi̇mbek Sultanov
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The Hadoop framework uses the MapReduce programming paradigm to process big data by distributing data across a cluster and aggregating. MapReduce is one of the methods used to process big data hosted on large clusters. In this method, jobs are processed by dividing into small pieces and distributing over nodes. Parameters such as distributing method over nodes, the number of jobs held in a parallel fashion, and the number of nodes in the cluster affect the execution time of jobs. The aim of this paper is to determine how the numbers of nodes, maps, and reduces affect the performance of …

Modeling Hybrid Modulation Strategy With Nearest Leveled Vector Switching Pattern In Space Vector Control Technique For Multilevel Inverters, Rohith Balaji Jonnala, Sai Babu Choppavarapu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The multilevel inverter's impact in the area of power electronics is augmented because of its nimble nature. This paper presents an efficient switching pattern for multilevel inverters using the nearest leveled vector (NLV) strategy through a space vector control (SVC) technique. The objective is to reduce the total harmonic distortions by generating an optimal switching sequence with the newly introduced NLV-SVC for multilevel inverters. The proposed NLV modulation is applied for an asymmetrical multilevel inverter, which has a high number of levels with reduced switch count, sources, and lower switching losses. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on …

Multitier Decentralized Control Scheme Using Energy Storage Unit And Load Management In Inverter-Based Ac Microgrids, Sara Nourollah, Abolfazl Pirayesh, Matthias Fripp
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The use of renewable energies, such as wind and solar, is rising in microgrids. However, because of their intermittent nature, achieving a stable system in spite of the fluctuations of generation and demand is very difficult. Aiming to increase the stability margin of AC islanded microgrids comprising nondeterministic resources, properly share real power (P), and keep the network frequency ($f)$ at nominal value, this study exploits the presence of energy storage units (ESUs) along with a load-shedding scheme. To this end, this study proposes a multitier decentralized control strategy that is based on frequency and includes three control schemes, distributed …

Turkish Synonym Identification From Multiple Resources: Monolingual Corpus, Mono/Bilingual Online Dictionaries, And Wordnet, Tuğba Yildiz, Banu Di̇ri̇, Savaş Yildirim
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a model is proposed to determine synonymy by incorporating several resources. The model extracts the features from monolingual online dictionaries, a bilingual online dictionary, WordNet, and a monolingual Turkish corpus. Once it has built a candidate list, it determines the synonymy for a given word by means of those features. All these resources and the approaches are evaluated. Taking all features into account and applying machine learning algorithms, the model shows good performance of F-measure with 81.4%. The study contributes to the literature by integrating several resources and attempting the first corpus-driven synonym detection system for Turkish.

Design And Walking Pattern Generation Of A Biped Robot, Tolga Olcay, Ahmet Özkurt
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents the design of a biped robot, the walking trajectory generation method, and experimental results about biped walking. Walking trajectory generation is one of the deterministic factors in walking robot applications. Different approaches for stable walking trajectory are worked on in robotic research. The linear inverted pendulum model (LIPM) is an effective method used with the zero moment point (ZMP) criteria. Biped robot trunk and feet moving patterns are generated depending on these fundamental methods. In this study, generated trajectories were tested by a 12 degree of freedom (DOF) biped robot RUBI built at Dokuz Eylül University. In …

Transient State Estimation With The Bergeron Transmission Line Model, Naret Suyaroj, Suttichai Premrudeepreechacharn, Neville Robert Watson
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Transient state estimation (TSE) was used to determine the state values that have no measurement equipment placed in an electric power system with transient phenomena. Previous papers used the PI model for TSE with a short transmission line, but longer lines require the development of algorithms that include the distributed parameters of transmission lines with the Bergeron model. The test system was a 10-bus power system. The simulated transient was caused by a fault event, resulting in different persistent voltage drops that ranged from 10% to 90% at selected buses. In addition, noises were applied to evaluate the algorithm, which …

Classifications Of Disturbances Using Wavelet Transform And Support Vector Machine, Neda Hajibandeh, Faramarz Faghihi, Hossein Ranjbar, Hesam Kazari
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes a new method to detect and classify all kinds of faults, capacitor switching, and load switching in a power system network based on wavelet transform and support vector machines (SVMs). In this regard, a sample of a power system is simulated via MATLAB/Simulink, and by reading the voltage of the point of common coupling and using the wavelet transform, the differences of the outputs of the wavelet transform are investigated. The SVM approach is employed to distinguish the type of the transient (capacitor switching, fault, and/or load switching) in use for the high level outputs of the …

An Optimized Buffer Insertion Algorithm With Delay-Power Constraints For Vlsi Layouts, Chessda Uttraphan, Nasir Shaikh-Husin, Mohamed Khalil Hani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We propose a grid-graph algorithm for interconnect routing and buffer insertion in nanometer VLSI layout designs. The algorithm is designed to handle multiconstraint optimizations, namely timing performance and power dissipation. The proposed algorithm is called HRTB-LA, which stands for hybrid routing tree and buffer insertion with look-ahead. In recent VLSI designs, interconnect delay has become a dominant factor compared to gate delay. The well-known technique to minimize the interconnect delay is by inserting buffers along the interconnect wires. However, the buffer itself consumes power and it has been shown that power dissipation overhead due to buffer insertions is significantly high. …

A Combined Approach Based On Fuzzy Ahp And Fuzzy Inference System To Rank Reviewers In Online Communities, Hossein Abbasimehr, Mohammadjafar Tarokh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Online product review communities allow users to share their ideas and opinions about various products and services. Although online reviews as user-generated content can be considered as an invaluable source of information for both consumers and firms, these reviews tend to be of very different quality. To tackle the problem of low quality reviews, we address reviewer credibility and propose an innovative framework. The framework comprises five critical phases for ranking reviewers in terms of credibility using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy inference system. To determine the weights of the features, a fuzzy AHP method was applied. …
A New Mechanism To Improve Video Streaming In P2p Networks Using Helper Nodes, Javid Kargar, Abdorasoul Ghasemi
A New Mechanism To Improve Video Streaming In P2p Networks Using Helper Nodes, Javid Kargar, Abdorasoul Ghasemi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Peer-to-peer video on demand (P2P-VoD) is a solution to provide video service to a large number of users on the Internet. Due to the upload bandwidth bottleneck of VoD servers, the streaming capacity in the P2P-VoD system is limited. This paper proposes a new mechanism to improve the video streaming in P2P networks by using the idle peers upload bandwidth and storage, which are called helpers. The proposed method uses an XOR mechanism in the VoD server to encode chunks and reduce bandwidth use. The helpers receive encoded chunks from the VoD server and save them in their storage spaces …

An Effective Empirical Approach To Voip Traffic Classification, Nazar Abbas Saqib, Yaqoot Shakeel, Moazzam Ali Khan, Hasan Mehmood, Muhammad Zia
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
It is beneficial for telecommunication authorities and Internet service providers (ISPs) to classify and detect voice traffic. It can help them to block unsubscribed users from using their services, which saves them huge revenues. Voice packets can be detected easily, but it becomes complicated when the application or port information in the packet header is hidden due to some secure mechanism such as encryption. This work provides effective voice packet classification and detection based on behavioral and statistical analysis, which is independent of any application, security protocol, or encryption mechanism. First we have made initial assessments through packet feature analysis …

A Metaheuristic Based On The Tabu Search For Hardware-Software Partitioning, Mehdi Jemai, Sonia Dimassi, Bouraoui Ouni, Abdellatif Mtibaa
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Several metaheuristics have become increasingly interesting in solving combinatorial problems. In this paper, we present an algorithm involving a metaheuristic based on tabu search and binary search trees to address the problem of hardware-software partitioning. Metaheuristics do not guarantee an optimum solution, but they can produce acceptable solutions in a reasonable time. Our proposed algorithm seeks to find the efficient hardware-software partitioning that minimizes the logic area of a system on a programmable chip under the condition of time constraints. Our goal is to have a better trade-off between the logic area of the application and its execution time. Finally, …

A Self-Tuning Neurofuzzy Feedback Linearization-Based Damping Control Strategy For Multiple Hvdc Links, Saghir Ahmad, Laiq Khan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This research work proposes a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) online adaptive feedback linearization NeuroFuzzy control (AFLNFC) scheme to improve the damping of low frequency oscillations (LFOs) in an AC/DC power system. Optimized NeuroFuzzy identification architecture online captures the oscillatory dynamics of the power system through wide area measurement system (WAMS)-based measured speed signals of machines. Based on the identified power system model, the appropriate control law is derived through feedback linearization control with a self-tuned coefficient vector. The generated control signal modulates the real power flow through a high voltage direct current (HVDC) link during perturbed operating conditions and enhances system …

Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation Using An Adaptive Hammerstein Block Structure Based On A Generalized Basis Function, Tuğba Özge Onur, Rifat Hacioğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We investigated adaptive algorithms for a Hammerstein block structure in which a static nonlinear block and dynamic linear block are cascaded. The approach considered here is to use generalized orthonormal basis functions in a Hammerstein block structure by using fixed pole filter banks. We applied the normalized least mean square approach to the developed adaptive algorithm in order to acquire Hammerstein block structure parameters. Performance comparison of the proposed approach was investigated considering convergence speed and parametric complexity for acoustic echo cancellation application. The results indicated that in the developed algorithm along with appropriate selection of fixed poles, the algorithm …
