Framework For Industrial Control System Honeypot Network Traffic Generation, Htein A. Lin
Framework For Industrial Control System Honeypot Network Traffic Generation, Htein A. Lin
Theses and Dissertations
Defending critical infrastructure assets is an important but extremely difficult and expensive task. Historically, decoys have been used very effectively to distract attackers and in some cases convince an attacker to reveal their attack strategy. Several researchers have proposed the use of honeypots to protect programmable logic controllers, specifically those used to support critical infrastructure. However, most of these honeypot designs are static systems that wait for a would-be attacker. To be effective, honeypot decoys need to be as realistic as possible. This paper introduces a proof-of-concept honeypot network traffic generator that mimics genuine control systems. Experiments are conducted using …
Applying Cyber Threat Intelligence To Industrial Control Systems, Matthew P. Sibiga
Applying Cyber Threat Intelligence To Industrial Control Systems, Matthew P. Sibiga
Theses and Dissertations
A cybersecurity initiative known as cyber threat intelligence (CTI) has recently been developed and deployed. The overall goal of this new technology is to help protect network infrastructures. Threat intelligence platforms (TIPs) have also been created to help facilitate CTI effectiveness within organizations. There are many benefits that both can achieve within the information technology (IT) sector. The industrial control system (ICS) sector can also benefit from these technologies as most ICS networks are connected to IT networks. CTI and TIPs become resourceful when using indicators of compromise (IOCs) from known ICS malware attacks and an open source intrusion detection …

Development Of The Architecture Cost Effectiveness Framework And Application To Open Systems Architectures, Donald A. Barrett
Theses and Dissertations
The Modular Open System Approach (MOSA) is an initiative to, among other things, reduce cost and schedule for acquisitions programs. While programs have experienced savings using MOSA, the majority of programs have not, in part due to a lack of a logical method for evaluating architecture alternatives. This research develops the Architecture Cost Effectiveness Framework (ACEF), which combines multi-attribute utility analysis with cost effectiveness analysis throughout the program lifecycle. Step 1 is the establishment of a business strategy that includes an Attribute Hierarchy of selected operational requirements. The business strategy also defines Lifecycle Utility Reference Profiles (LURPs) that document changing …
Supernode Transformation On Parallel Systems With Distributed Memory – An Analytical Approach, Yong Chen
Supernode Transformation On Parallel Systems With Distributed Memory – An Analytical Approach, Yong Chen
Engineering Ph.D. Theses
Supernode transformation, or tiling, is a technique that partitions algorithms to improve data locality and parallelism by balancing computation and inter-processor communication costs to achieve shortest execution or running time. It groups multiple iterations of nested loops into supernodes to be assigned to processors for processing in parallel. A supernode transformation can be described by supernode size and shape. This research focuses on supernode transformation on multi-processor architectures with distributed memory, including computer cluster systems and General Purpose Graphic Processing Units (GPGPUs). The research involves supernode scheduling, supernode mapping to processors, and the finding of the optimal supernode size, for …

Orthoplanar Spring Based Compliant Force/Torque Sensor For Robot Force Control, Jerry West
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A compliant force/torque sensor for robot force control has been developed. This thesis presents methods of designing, testing, and implementing the sensor on a robotic system. The sensor uses an orthoplanar spring equipped with Hall-effect sensors to measure one component of force and two moment components. Its unique design allows for simple and cost effective manufacturing, high reliability, and compactness. The device may be used in applications where a robot must control contact forces with its environment, such as in surface cleaning tasks, manipulating doors, and removing threaded fasteners. The compliant design of the sensor improves force control performance and …

A Fast And Efficient Python Library For Interfacing With The Biological Magnetic Resonance Data Bank, Andrey Smelter, Morgan Astra, Hunter N. B. Moseley
Center for Environmental and Systems Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Background: The Biological Magnetic Resonance Data Bank (BMRB) is a public repository of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic data of biological macromolecules. It is an important resource for many researchers using NMR to study structural, biophysical, and biochemical properties of biological macromolecules. It is primarily maintained and accessed in a flat file ASCII format known as NMR-STAR. While the format is human readable, the size of most BMRB entries makes computer readability and explicit representation a practical requirement for almost any rigorous systematic analysis.
Results:To aid in the use of this public resource, we have developed a package called …

Supporting Therapy-Centered Game Design For Brain Injury Rehabilitation, Jinghui Cheng
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Brain injuries (BI) are a major public health issue. Many therapists who work with patients who have had a BI include games to ameliorate boredom associated with repetitive rehabilitation. However, designing effective, appropriate, and engaging games for BI therapy is challenging. The challenge is especially manifested when considering how to consolidate the different mindsets and motivations among key stakeholders; i.e., game designers and therapists. In this dissertation, I investigated the ideation, creation, and evaluation of game design patterns and a design tool, GaPBIT (Game Design Patterns for BI Therapy) that leveraged patterns to support ideation of …

Funny Games - A Definition For And Study Of Comic Videogames, Eric Guardara
Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)
In this project, I define the genre of Comic Games and discuss its categorical independence of other genres. Until now, this genre has not been clearly defined in the videogame medium. I have conducted research and compiled games that are generally accepted as being humorous. I then weeded out games that simply contain humor and categorized the remaining works that are at their core Comic Games. Comic Games are those whose primary and prolonged purpose are to evoke laughter from the user. This is different than humorous games that passively include humor. A Comic Game is one that is predominantly …

Vistics is a 2.5D platformer game for virtual reality devices such as the Oculus Rift. One of the major software goals in the Vistics design is to reduce the effects of simulation sickness in virtual reality devices. On the technical side, Vistics needs to achieve a low enough rendering time that matches the refresh rate of the device of the Oculus Rift - 90 Hz (also known as 90 frames per seconds). Additionally, the camera in the game must be capable of updating in under 16ms. This means that when the user changes their head position in the real world, …

A Hierarchical Learning Model For Extracting Public Health Data From Social Media, Elham Rastegari
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
In decision making processes, particularly when it comes to health-related decisions, each relevant piece of information is important. This is particularly important when it comes to health conditions for which there remains a high degree of non-determinism as far as diagnosis and treatment. Online social media, are places in which people feel free to share their opinions about numerous topics, including public health issues and how individuals have responded to different types of treatments associated with diseases. social media could represent a secondary source that can be used as a supplement to other data sources. This would allow individuals as …

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) will be integrated into the future Internet as one of the components of the Internet of Things, and will become globally addressable by any entity connected to the Internet. Despite the great potential of this integration, it also brings new threats, such as the exposure of sensor nodes to attacks originating from the Internet. In this context, lightweight authentication and key agreement protocols must be in place to enable end-to-end secure communication. Recently, Amin et al. proposed a three-factor mutual authentication protocol for WSNs. However, we identified several flaws in their protocol. We found that their …

Video Frame Interpolation Via Adaptive Convolution, Simon Niklaus, Long Mai, Feng Liu
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Video frame interpolation typically involves two steps: motion estimation and pixel synthesis. Such a two-step approach heavily depends on the quality of motion estimation. This paper presents a robust video frame interpolation method that combines these two steps into a single process. Specifically, our method considers pixel synthesis for the interpolated frame as local convolution over two input frames. The convolution kernel captures both the local motion between the input frames and the coefficients for pixel synthesis. Our method employs a deep fully convolu- tional neural network to estimate a spatially-adaptive con- volution kernel for each pixel. This deep neural …

Normalizer: Augmenting Code Clone Detectors Using Source Code Normalization, Kevin Ly
Master's Theses
Code clones are duplicate fragments of code that perform the same task. As software code bases increase in size, the number of code clones also tends to increase. These code clones, possibly created through copy-and-paste methods or unintentional duplication of effort, increase maintenance cost over the lifespan of the software. Code clone detection tools exist to identify clones where a human search would prove unfeasible, however the quality of the clones found may vary. I demonstrate that the performance of such tools can be improved by normalizing the source code before usage. I developed Normalizer, a tool to transform C …

User Interface/eXperience (UI/UX) significantly affects the lifetime of any software program, particularly mobile apps. A bad UX can undermine the success of a mobile app even if that app enables sophisticated capabilities. A good UX, however, needs to be supported of a highly functional and user friendly UI design. In spite of the importance of building mobile apps based on solid UI designs, UI discrepancies- inconsistencies between UI design and implementation-Are among the most numerous and expensive defects encountered during testing. This paper presents UI X-RAY, an interactive UI testing system that integrates computer-vision methods to facilitate the correction of …

Over the last few years, identity-based cryptosystem (IBC) has attracted widespread attention because it avoids the high overheads associated with public key certificate management. However, an unsolved but critical issue about IBC is how to revoke a misbehaving user. There are some revocable identity-based encryption schemes that have been proposed recently, but little work on the revocation problem of identity-based signature has been undertaken so far. One approach for revocation in identity-based settings is to update users' private keys periodically, which is usually done by the key generation center (KGC). But with this approach, the load on the KGC will …

Students at Cal Poly run into two main problems involving clubs: efficiency of communication and the ability to find clubs that interest them. Currently, members of clubs communicate in four main ways: Facebook, GroupMe, text message, and email. As a result, it is fairly easy for things to become disorganized from all the different types of communication. Group members are forced to check multiple communication outlets just to stay updated, wasting their time. In addition, finding clubs at Cal Poly is not easy. The annual club fair helps interested students to some degree, but with hundreds of clubs on campus …

Bayesian Optimization For Refining Object Proposals, Anthony D. Rhodes, Jordan Witte, Melanie Mitchell, Bruno Jedynak
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
We develop a general-purpose algorithm using a Bayesian optimization framework for the efficient refinement of object proposals. While recent research has achieved substantial progress for object localization and related objectives in computer vision, current state-of-the-art object localization procedures are nevertheless encumbered by inefficiency and inaccuracy. We present a novel, computationally efficient method for refining inaccurate bounding-box proposals for a target object using Bayesian optimization. Offline, image features from a convolutional neural network are used to train a model to predict an object proposal’s offset distance from a target object. Online, this model is used in a Bayesian active search to …

Creating a bicycle with a rideable geometry is more complicated than it may appear, with today’s mainstay designs having evolved through years of iteration. This slow evolution coupled with the bicycle’s intricate mechanical system has lead most builders to base their new geometries off of previous work rather than expand into new design spaces. This crutch can lead to slow bicycle iteration rates, often causing bicycles to all look about the same. To combat this, several bicycle design models have been created over the years, with each attempting to define a bicycle’s handling characteristics given its physical geometry. However, these …
