Pavement construction monitoring and quality assurance (QA) practices are mostly based on costly, discrete, and destructive methods. Most quality assurance programs are based on pavement construction procedures encompassing in-situ coring for layer thickness determination, density measurements, laboratory testing to measure volumetric properties, and smoothness measurements in case of the availability of a profiler. The main objective of this study was to develop a machine learning-based classifier for predicting pavement roughness and aggregate segregation based on digital image analysis, image recognition, and deep learning machine models. The developed Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) models were trained, tested, and validated using 600-pavement surface …

Master's Theses
Reverse osmosis (RO) is widely used for water reclamation and is one of the most feasible technologies for addressing water scarcity around the world. RO membrane fabrication procedures are continually being optimized and modified to enhance the treatment performance and efficacy of the RO process. A review of the existing literature published on membrane fabrication revealed that a detailed and reproducible methodology consistent among prior studies was not available. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to utilize techniques from prior research to develop a reliable lab-scale membrane fabrication process for studying the potable reuse applications of TFC RO …
Wind Flow Characteristics Of Multi-Vortex Tornadoes And Their Wind Effects On Residential Houses, Yi Zhao
Wind Flow Characteristics Of Multi-Vortex Tornadoes And Their Wind Effects On Residential Houses, Yi Zhao
Doctoral Dissertations
"Tornadoes strike the USA very frequently, with an average of 1200 reports per year, and the average annual tornado-induced property loss has reached $10B. The devastation from recent tornadoes have prompted a renewed interest in better understanding tornado dynamics, their interactions with the built environment, and the performance of civil structures during tornadoes. In the past, the wind effects caused by single-vortex tornadoes have been widely studied, while the multi-vortex tornadoes were rarely considered. In fact, many previous deadly, costly tornadoes involved multiple vortices. Therefore, it is important to understand the wind flow characteristics of multi-vortex tornadoes in order to …

Evaluation Of Life Cycle Costs, Benefits, And Public Perceptions Of Greywater Reuse Systems For Supplementing Conventional Water Delivery, Sreeganesh Reddy Yerri
All Dissertations
The water utility industry is under enormous pressure to meet the challenges of increasing demands due to population growth, lifestyle changes, and depleting freshwater resources. The current and predicted future deficit scenarios challenge water supply managers to come up with a sustainable and reliable alternative source while making the supply infrastructure smarter and resilient. One such alternative source is the greywater that is available at the point of consumption itself. With certain limitations, there have been studies performed to evaluate the life cycle costs and expected monetary benefits of decentralized greywater reuse systems, but the public and health bureaus are …
Feasibility Of Using Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (Uhpc) As A Repair Material Durability Performance, Rebar Coating, And Bond Characterization, Haitham Hussein
Feasibility Of Using Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (Uhpc) As A Repair Material Durability Performance, Rebar Coating, And Bond Characterization, Haitham Hussein
All Dissertations
Ultra-High Performance Concrete can be a very good material for use in repair works. The ability of chloride ions to pass through repaired concrete layers is suppressed if an impermeable concrete like UHPC is used. However, thickness of the UHPC layer and the orientation of the repair layer relative to the direction of chloride ingress may influence its effectiveness. This study is an attempt to evaluate the effect of varying thicknesses and cross sections areas of UHPC over a precast concrete and the direction of the UHPC layers relative to the direction of chloride ion movement on the resistance offered …
Crack Control And Bond Performance Of Alternative Coated Reinforcements In Concrete, Sachin Sreedhara
Crack Control And Bond Performance Of Alternative Coated Reinforcements In Concrete, Sachin Sreedhara
All Dissertations
Concrete cracking in structures is a ubiquitous problem which can lead to the deterioration of the structure. Other than affecting the strength aspect of a structure, cracking impacts the serviceability criteria as well. Although cracking phenomenon in any structure is highly inevitable, it has to be minimized in order to maintain a structure’s life effectively. Cracking in reinforced concrete structures is related to the bond strength developed between the bar and the concrete. It also depends on an ability of the bar to resist the stresses due to shrinkage to minimize the crack. Another important aspect is the resistance offered …
Machine Learning-Enabled Model-Based Condition Assessment Of Water Pipelines By Leveraging Hydraulic Monitoring Data, Ahmad Momeni
Machine Learning-Enabled Model-Based Condition Assessment Of Water Pipelines By Leveraging Hydraulic Monitoring Data, Ahmad Momeni
All Dissertations
Overpopulation and climate change have direly challenged the freshwater resources, specifically potable water supplied by water distribution networks (WDNs). One aggravating issue associated with the WDNs is associated with the pipeline leakage, which accounts for almost 20% of freshwater loss in WDNs throughout the US. Leakage detection and severity measurement are of top
asset management priorities in water utilities to minimize and mitigate complicated risks attributed to background and burst leakage. Accordingly, decline in other pipe condition parameters such as effective hydraulic diameters and roughness coefficients, which are complex and uncertain in nature, abets leakage by worsening the WDN status …
Quantification Of Wave Attentuation Of A Marsh Sill Living Shoreline And Application Of Numerical Modeling For Design Optimization And Adaptation, Maura K. Boswell
Quantification Of Wave Attentuation Of A Marsh Sill Living Shoreline And Application Of Numerical Modeling For Design Optimization And Adaptation, Maura K. Boswell
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Living shorelines integrate structural and natural features to stabilize the shoreline, through reduction of erosion from the wave climate, while keeping the connectivity between land and aquatic ecosystems. With increasing sea levels, living shorelines have the potential to adapt to changing conditions when compared to armored shorelines due to maintaining a level of interconnectivity between land and water. However, to reduce the ecological tradeoffs associated with any type of shoreline erosion protection project that alters the natural state, the design should seek to minimize structural components to those necessary to provide the protection needed for upland habitat to survive erosive …

Underbalanced perforation can substantially reduce formation damage and improve the efficiency of production operation. The field in question is a giant oil field in Southwest Iran, with over 350,000 bbl/day production rates. Reservoir X is the main reservoir of the field and includes 139 horizontal wells out of the total of 185 production wells drilled in the field. Despite its technical difficulties, under-balance perforation has been proven to result in high productivity ratios and has been shown to reduce workover costs if appropriately conducted. Therefore, this study investigated a customized underbalanced tubing conveyed perforation to enhance oil production. First, post-drilling …
Innovative Foundation Alternative Inspired From Tree Roots, Macie Larranaga
Innovative Foundation Alternative Inspired From Tree Roots, Macie Larranaga
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
It is not easy to find a more efficient foundation system than the roots of a tree. Trees create a vast three-dimensional network of roots to support and anchor the critical above-ground trunks, leaves, and limbs. In this work, investigations are made for the feasibility of imitating such a technique and creating similar networks to support civil infrastructure, particularly those subjected to moment loads such as traffic signal posts. Some of the raised questions were: Is it feasible to have a shallow tree root-based foundation system to provide the same capacities as conventional foundation alternatives? If this is feasible: What …
Sustain Water Conservation Behaviors Using Nonparametric Ranking And Social Marketing, Mahmudur Rahman Aveek
Sustain Water Conservation Behaviors Using Nonparametric Ranking And Social Marketing, Mahmudur Rahman Aveek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Circulation of water use feedback and conservation messaging are strategies implemented to reduce water demand on a short-term (seasonal) basis. Often considered a less impactful strategy than other tactics such as price increments and usage restrictions, authorities mostly use feedback in informational campaigns with a focus to apprise users about their water use. Such conservation programs have had limited success that has been attributed to the fact that the information provided with the feedback campaigns was generic and did not motivate users enough to sustain their water-saving behaviors. However, the advent of disaggregation technologies that can provide appliance-wise water use …

Advancing The Cyberinfrastructure For Smart Water Metering And Water Demand Modeling, Nour A. Attallah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With rapid growth of urban populations and limited water resources, achieving an appropriate balance between water supply capacity and residential water demand poses a significant challenge to water supplying agencies. With the recent emergence of smart metering technology, where water use can be monitored and recorded at high resolution (e.g., observations of water use every 5 seconds), most existing research has been aimed at providing water managers with detailed information about the water use behavior of their consumers and the performance of water using fixtures. However, replacing existing meters with smart meters is expensive, and effectively using data produced by …
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics To Predict Flow Through The West Crack Breach Of The Great Salt Lake Railroad Causeway, Michael Rasmussen
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics To Predict Flow Through The West Crack Breach Of The Great Salt Lake Railroad Causeway, Michael Rasmussen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA, is a terminal, saline lake and is divided into two primary sections (northern and southern) by an east-to-west railroad causeway. Shortly after completion of the earth-fill causeway in the late 1950s, the two sections became dramatically different with differences in water surface elevation and water density. These differences cause the formation of a unique flow behavior commonly referred to as a density-driven exchange flow or bi-directional flow; a behavior observed in other lake and ocean settings where two fluids of differing densities interact. Measuring these exchange flows is a priority for lake managers …
Bugs Buy Steady Releases From Hydropower Producers To Encourage More Synergistic Reservoir Management, Moazzam Ali Rind
Bugs Buy Steady Releases From Hydropower Producers To Encourage More Synergistic Reservoir Management, Moazzam Ali Rind
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Hydropower generated from dams has significant economic value, however, that value is achieved at the cost of native ecosystem devastation. Here, we have estimated loss in hydropower revenue due to inclusion of the steady low flow days –Bug Flow Experiments. We developed a linear optimization model and constraint method that restrict the number of steady low flow days while maximizes the hydropower revenue generation. The results suggested that increase in release volume will benefit both the objectives (win-win scenario), energy price differential between on-and off-peak periods controls the position and shape of tradeoff curves, and offset release does not have …
Highly Variable Rainfall-Runoff Patterns Across Burned Mountainous Watersheds In The Colorado River Headwaters, Haley Anne Canham
Highly Variable Rainfall-Runoff Patterns Across Burned Mountainous Watersheds In The Colorado River Headwaters, Haley Anne Canham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wildfires can contribute to enhanced flooding, erosion, debris flows, sediment transport, and water quality changes that impact downstream infrastructure, water users, and aquatic habitat. With increasing wildfire risk in the western U.S. due to a changing climate, understanding post-wildfire rainfall-runoff patterns and controls is critical for continued water resources security. To improve understanding of post-wildfire rainfall-runoff patterns and controls, we developed a transparent, repeatable analysis framework to collect precipitation and streamflow data, identify paired rainfall-runoff events, and analyze these events to evaluate post-wildfire rainfall-runoff patterns and controls. To automate the rainfall-runoff event identification, the Rainfall-Runoff Event Detection and Identification (RREDI) …

Passage Probability Of Woody Debris Elements And Accumulations At I- And V-Shaped Rock Weirs, Kathryn Margetts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The transport and accumulation of driftwood or large woody debris (LWD) in mountain streams is a natural part of catchment health and river connectivity. At hydraulic structures, the presence of LWD may impact flow efficiency and influence upstream water depth. LWD has been studied at a variety of spillways and weir types, however, little is known about its interaction at rock weirs. This study investigated factors affecting the passage of individual LWD elements and any LWD accumulations at rock weirs, as well as potential impacts upstream of LWD accumulations through field-informed scaled model testing. Observations of LWD at rock weirs …

Modeling Triaxial Testing With Flexible Membrane To Investigate Effects Of Particle Size On Strength And Strain Properties Of Cohesionless Soil, Thang Pham, Md. Wasif Zaman, Thuy Vu
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
A 3D DEM model using Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) software was developed utilizing a bonded-ball flexible membrane approach to study cohesionless soil as a discontinuous discrete material. This approach is not yet widely used because of its complexity and high computational cost, but it allowed the authors to observe the stress-strain curves of triaxial specimens, to single out effects of individual factors on the strength and strain properties, and to observe the formation of the shear band and failure surface. The 3D model was calibrated and verified with experimental data, and a sensitivity analysis was carried out for the microparameters. …
Isogeometric Reconstruction And Crash Analysis Of A 1996 Body-In-White Dodge Neon, Kendrick M. Shepherd
Isogeometric Reconstruction And Crash Analysis Of A 1996 Body-In-White Dodge Neon, Kendrick M. Shepherd
Faculty Publications
Isogeometric analysis (IGA) has attracted attention from academia and industry because of its high-fidelity results, ability to represent geometry exactly, and potential to streamline the engineering design-through-analysis process. However, one of the greatest challenges limiting the scope of IGA is the ability to rapidly convert CAD geometry into a set of splines suitable for engineering analysis¾particularly for a wide set of shapes of industrial relevance. In this presentation, we describe a new, mathematically rigorous, potentially automatable framework using Ricci flow and subsequent metric optimization through which surface geometries can be rebuilt as sets of watertight, analysis-suitable, boundary-conforming semistructured NURBS patches. …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The intrusion of chloride ions in concrete served in the marine environment is the leading cause of corrosion of steel bars. This paper examined the result of a long-term survey on the actual structure (the Tomakomai breakwater) treated with a set of penetrants partly. The survey was conducted twice, in the 12th and 20th years after construction.
The results showed that the penetrants could effectively reduce the penetration of chloride ions into concrete. After using the penetrants, the calculated surface chloride ion concentration was decreased by 5.04%/72.18% (the 12th year/the 20th year). As the service years increase, surface chloride ion …

Efficiency Of Bank Filtration In The Removal Of Cyanotoxins Under Different Levels Of Nutrients, Luke Walkenhorst
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are an increasing concern not only in Nebraska, but across the world. Increasing global temperatures in conjunction with overuse of synthetic fertilizers are leading causes to the increasing frequency and concern of HABs. In the present work, the effectiveness of simulated bank filtration (BF), as an economical water treatment option, to remove cyanotoxins under different levels of nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) was investigated. Vertical flow-through columns pre-acclimated with two levels of nutrients (e.g., nitrate and phosphate—10 vs. 50 mg/L) were exposed to two different levels of cyanotoxins (10 vs. 75 μg/L). Results from the study confirmed …

Self-driving vehicles and smart roads are not new concepts. These ideas have been discussed for many years but for much of this time, the required technology was not available to make them a reality. Just recently has our technology caught up to our ideas and we are beginning to see progress towards the realization of the automated highway system. As the transition to a complete automated system is still in progress, this leaves many questions that still need to be answered as well as allowing for novel solutions to be presented. Using modern research papers to formulate a sound basis …

Commercial Janus Fabrics As Reusable Facemask Materials: A Balance Of Water Repellency, Filtration Efficiency, Breathability, And Reusability, Steven Cheng, Weixing Hao, Yuchen Wang, Yang Wang, Shu Yang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Facemasks as personal protective equipment play a significant role in helping prevent the spread of viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic. A desired reusable fabric facemask should strike a balance of water repellency, good filtration efficiency (FE), breathability, and mechanical robustness against washing cycles. Despite significant efforts in testing various commercial fabric materials for filtration efficiency, few have investigated fabric performance as a function of the fiber/yarn morphology and wettability of the fabric itself. In this study, we examine commercial fabrics with Janus-like behaviors to determine the best reusable fabric facemask materials by understanding the roles of morphology, porosity, and wettability …
Wetland Soil Development Along Salinity And Hydrogeomorphic Gradients In Active And Inactive Deltaic Basins Of Coastal Louisiana, Amanda Fontenot
Wetland Soil Development Along Salinity And Hydrogeomorphic Gradients In Active And Inactive Deltaic Basins Of Coastal Louisiana, Amanda Fontenot
LSU Master's Theses
Coastal wetlands provide an abundance of ecosystem services that benefit society, such as essential habitat for commercial species, storm protection, nutrient cycling, and carbon storage. Louisiana faces rapid rates of relative sea level rise (natural subsidence and eustatic sea levels) that threaten wetland survival, which are amplified by a reduction of riverine sediment input. An important determining factor of marsh survival is the formation of wetland platform elevation, known as vertical accretion, which is determined by several processes including sediment deposition & erosion, below ground biomass (BGB) productivity, decomposition of organic matter, shallow & deep subsidence, and soil compaction. Feldspar …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Canopy cover (CC) is an important indicator for crop development. Currently, CC can be estimated indirectly by measuring leaf area index (LAI), using commercially available hand-held meters. However, it does not capture the dynamics of CC. Continuous CC monitoring is essential for dry edible beans production since it can affect crop water use, weed, and disease control. It also helps growers to closely monitor “yellowness”, or senescence of dry beans to decide proper irrigation cutoff to allow the crop to dry down for harvest. The goal of this study was to develop a device – CanopyCAM, containing software and hardware …

The Effects Of Curing Temperature On The Hydration Kinetics Of Plain And Fly Ash Pastes And Compressive Strength Of Corresponding Mortars With And Without Nano-Tio2 Addition., Dan Huang, Mirian Velay-Lizancos, Jan Olek
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Incorporation of fly ash in cementitious systems containing ordinary portland cement (OPC) increases their long-term strength and durability. However, replacement of cement by fly ash also reduces the heat of hydration of such systems and reduces early-age strength development. The reduced rate of strength development can increase the risk of durability problems, e.g. scaling, in cases when young concrete is exposed to low temperatures and deicing chemicals. This study investigated the potential of nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) particles to modify the hydration kinetics of fly ash pastes and compressive strength development of corresponding mortars cured under low (4°C) and …
