Contribution Of High Turbidity To Tidal Dynamics In A Curved Channel In Zhoushan Islands, China, Li Li, Fangzhou Shen, Zhiguo He, Gangfeng Ma, Jiachen Wang, Kailong Huangfu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The curved tidal channel, Luotou Deep-water Navigational Channel, is the main channel of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port, which is ranked first in the world. Tidal dynamics in the channel are spatially and temporally asymmetric. In this study, the three-dimensional tidal dynamics in the channel were analyzed using field data and simulated using FVCOM. The results show that the tides in the channel flood/ebb along the northern/southern bank near the bottom/surface layer and these asymmetries are due to the imbalanced Coriolis force, centrifugal force, sea-level gradient, and density gradient. Residual current velocity peaks (0.7 m/s) in the middle of the channel …

Investigating The Viability Of Low Frequency Mhvsr Estimates Using Deep Shear Wave Velocity Profile, T. Mai, C. C. Nweke, P. Wang, F. J. Ornelas

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Site response describes the alterations of seismic energy due to its interaction with subsurface geological interfaces and structures, which is usually estimated by one dimensional (1D) ground response analysis (GRA). However, 1D GRA requires subsurface information (e.g., shear wave velocity profile), which makes it not widely applicable, particularly for the sites where subsurface information is unavailable. Alternatively, the microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (mHVSR) from three-component recordings of ambient noise on the ground surface is easily measured and is believed to have the potential for site response prediction (the peaks in mHVSR are strongly associated with the site resonant frequencies). However, the …

Removal Of Pfoa/Pfos In Water Using Electrocoagulation And Associated Life Cycle Impacts And Financial Costs, Tianhong Mu Jan 2024

Removal Of Pfoa/Pfos In Water Using Electrocoagulation And Associated Life Cycle Impacts And Financial Costs, Tianhong Mu

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Electrocoagulation (EC) with a zinc anode demonstrated promising results to remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from an aqueous solution. However, the energy requirement for EC is usually very high due to water electrolysis or aeration. The second chapter of this dissertation aims to reduce energy consumption using an air-cathode in EC (ACEC) to supply oxygen electron acceptor without aeration for attenuating PFOA/PFOS in this new configuration. For the high PFOA concentration (0.25 mM), ACEC with 45 min of the reaction time exhibited an excellent PFOA removal (99.8 ± 0.3% removal) comparable to an EC with aeration (EC-aeration, …

Characterization Of Size Distribution And Source Contribution To Airborne Particles In Buddhist Religious Places In Bangkok, Sopannha Chy

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Ultrafine particles, defined as particles with diameter below 100 nm, present high health risks but presently remain unknown in air quality management in Thailand. To better understand ultrafine particles, the appropriate quantification must be by aerosol numbers in a size-resolved manner in addition to the mass-based information currently used. This study investigated the particle number concentration and size distribution as well as estimating the source emission rate from incense burning in 3 temples and 1 shrine located in Bangkok, Thailand on peak days and normal day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and the …

"Adaptive Signal Control For Reducing The Effect Of Queue Spillback", Eamlong Tang Jan 2024

"Adaptive Signal Control For Reducing The Effect Of Queue Spillback", Eamlong Tang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Urban traffic congestion at signalized intersections poses significant challenges, with queue spillback events worsening delays, fuel consumption, and environmental impacts. This study addresses the critical issue of oversaturation at the Rama 4 intersection in Bangkok, where closely spaced intersections intensify congestion, leading to prolonged queues and inefficient green phase utilization. Traditional fixed-time signal controls lack the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating traffic volumes, emphasizing the need for an innovative approach. This research proposes an Adaptive Signal Control (ASC) scheme, utilizing VISSIM and VISVAP simulation tools to evaluate the system’s efficacy in managing real-time traffic conditions and reducing queue spillback events. …

Experimental Investigation On Internal Erosion Of Gap-Graded Sands And Its Improvement For Internal Erosion Control, Kasidit Chawanaputhron Jan 2024

Experimental Investigation On Internal Erosion Of Gap-Graded Sands And Its Improvement For Internal Erosion Control, Kasidit Chawanaputhron

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Internal erosion often occurs in earthen water-retaining structures such as embankment dams, levees, and dikes. This erosion is caused by seepage flows through soils or other porous materials containing a mixture of coarse and fine particles. The internal erosion process, also known as suffusion, involves the transport of fine particles carried away from the soil structure by seepage. Internal erosion can weaken the soil, create voids or cavities, and ultimately lead to structural collapse, posing a significant risk to earthen water-retaining structures. This research investigates the internal erosion behavior of gap-graded sands with various fine fraction contents through a series …

Projected Changes Of Extreme Rainfall Under Cmip6 In Cambodian Floodplain Of The Lower Mekong River Basin, Chanseyma Khoeun

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Climate change could potentially intensify extreme rainfall events in the future and lead to more frequent and severe flooding. This study aims to estimate future extreme rainfall indices in the Cambodian floodplain of the lower Mekong River Basin. Rainfall projections are devised from three Global Climate Models (GCMs): EC-Earth3, IPLS-CM6A-LR, and MRI-ESM2-0. Bias correction was applied using Quantile Mapping for the historical period (1985-2011) and Quantile Delta Mapping for the future period (2069-2095) under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 5-8.5 scenario. Rainfall projections show that there would be more intense extreme rainfall over the study area. IPSL-CM6A projects higher monthly …

Modeling Of Predictive Financial Performance Of Ppp Highways Using Bayesian Network (Bn), David Ty

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are contractual agreements between the public and the private sector to deliver economic and social infrastructure. The PPP environment is inherently complex and dynamic, often involving long-term contracts and significant financial performance risks. While many studies examine the construction and operation phases separately, this study focuses on predicting the financial performance of PPP highways by integrating the risks and factors in both phases. It also considers country risk factors, such as income level, GDP per capita, and economic growth, to assess their impact on PPP highway projects. Data on risks and risk factors were gathered from sources …

A Bim-Enabled Materials Flow Tracking Platform For The Construction Supply Chains Of Modular Steel Projects, Thandar Lwin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Off-site steel construction, or modular construction, involves building components in a factory and then bringing them to the construction site. This method speeds up construction, reduces waste, and improves quality. The movement of materials in this process is complicated, including ordering raw materials, making steel parts, transporting modules, and installing them on site. It is important to track these materials to ensure timely delivery, control costs, and avoid shortages of excess materials. In this paper, a BIM-enabled digital platform is developed to monitor and track the flow of construction materials in the supply chain of modular steel projects. This platform …

Adsorption by activated carbon is an effective method of dye removal. However, due to high production and regeneration costs of activated carbon, various studies on low-cost adsorbents have been conducted. Agricultural waste such as rice husk (RH) is seen to be a good adsorbent for dye removal. Moreover, rice husk is readily available. In this study, rice husk-based adsorbents were prepared by chemical and thermal treatments. Standard curve (colour vs absorbance) for Direct Blue 86 (DB 86) was prepared to determine the concentration of dye before and after adsorption. The adsorption potential of the adsorbent for textile dye DB 86 …

Understanding Learners' Perception Of Virtual Reality-Assisted Learning In Engineering Education, Mohammad Samin Mansur

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Virtual reality (VR)-assisted learning may facilitate an immersive and interactive learning environment and enable learners to explore and interact with learning content at their own pace and interest. However, it is still unknown how well VR is received in engineering learning while empowering autonomy and personalization. The objective of this study is to investigate learners' perceptions of VR-assisted learning in engineering education while allowing learners to learn at their own pace, driven by their personal preference. To this end, experiments were conducted, in which thirty engineering students were recruited and immersed in a VR setting designed to deliver an interactive …

Stormwater Responses To Climatic And Land Cover Changes In Lowly Urbanized Subcoastal Environments, Md Tanvirul Islam Jan 2024

Stormwater Responses To Climatic And Land Cover Changes In Lowly Urbanized Subcoastal Environments, Md Tanvirul Islam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stormwater runoff is widely considered a significant factor in coastal inundation and water quality degradation. The main objective of this thesis is to determine the potential impacts on stormwater runoff in lowly urbanized coastal/subcoastal environments under a changing climate and land use/cover. The East Fork San Jacinto River Basin (Area = 2577 of southern Texas, USA was considered a pilot area for this study. Given the sparse availability of high-resolution precipitation data in space and time, this research first evaluated four remotely sensed and/or reconstructed precipitation products (CMORPH-CDR, MERRA, PERSIANN-CDR, and PRISM) by comparing the data with the historical gauge …

This process of woven sciences is rooted in reciprocal relations and partnerships guided by Tribal Nations. Our cohort was invited by Wiyot Tribal Representatives to investigate a culvert located within the wetlands of Mouralherwaqh— a parcel of land reacquired by the Wiyot Tribe in 2022. This document seeks to share our experience and analysis as part of the Wiyot Tribe’s broader journey in navigating ecocultural restoration projects within Mouralherwaqh. The four community interests we investigated for the wetland crossing included a resized …

Assessing Stormwater Management Pond Water Quality, Function, And The Potential Biotic Effects To Receiving Waters, Mitchell Elstone Jan 2024

Assessing Stormwater Management Pond Water Quality, Function, And The Potential Biotic Effects To Receiving Waters, Mitchell Elstone

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The use of stormwater management ponds (SWMPs) has been increasing over the past five decades. However, an in-depth understanding of the daily performance of SWMPs and functionality during cold periods is limited. This is in part because mandated monitoring is relatively infrequent, and the assumption that SWMPs are inactive between storm events and during the winter. The goals of this research were to better understand daily stormwater (SW) characteristics, the performance of SWMPs based on current forms of evaluation and assess the potential for SWMP effluent to impact downstream biota. Influent and effluent samples from two SWMPs were collected daily …

Analysis Of Traffic Conflicts With Right Turning Vehicles At Unsignalized Intersections In Suburban Areas, Abbas Sheykhfard, Farshidreza Haghighi, Sarah Bakhtiari, Sara Moridpour, Kun Xie, Grigorios Fountas

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Right-turn collisions at intersections are one of the most dominant crash types in suburban areas, especially at unsignalized intersections. There is, however, a lack of comprehensive research on the speed patterns of vehicles during right-turn manoeuvres and their impact on crashes. To provide an in-depth investigation of the factors determining the safety of right-turn manoeuvres, driving behaviour data were collected through an instrumented vehicle study. Using this data, binary logistic regression models were developed to identify the factors affecting the probability of Vehicle-Vehicle (V-V) and Vehicle-Pedestrian (V-P) conflicts at six suburban intersections in Babol, Iran, during right-turn stage manoeuvres. In …

Small-Strain Site Response Of Soft Soils In The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Region Of California Conditioned On Vₛ₃₀ And Mhvsr, Tristan E. Buckreis, Jonathan P. Stewart, Scott J. Brandenberg, Pengfei Wang

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Sites located in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region of California typically have peaty-organic soils near the ground surface, which are characteristically soft, with shear wave velocities as low as 30 m/s. These unusually soft geotechnical conditions, which are outside the range of applicability of existing ergodic site amplification models, can be anticipated to produce significant site effects during earthquake shaking. We evaluate site response for 36 seismic stations in the Delta region using non-ergodic methods with low-amplitude ground motion data. We model first-order site effects using a period-dependent relation conditioned on the 30 m time-averaged shear wave velocity (V …

Effective healthcare traffic management is critical for ensuring prompt medical services, particularly in emergencies where delays can have life-threatening consequences. This study conducts a comparative analysis of three popular machine learning models—Linear Regression, Decision Trees, and Random Forests—for predicting healthcare-related traffic volumes. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from a metropolitan interstate traffic system, the models were evaluated based on key performance metrics, including Mean Squared Error (MSE), R² Score, and execution time. The findings demonstrate that the Random Forest model outperforms the others, offering superior predictive accuracy and efficiency. These insights are valuable for optimizing traffic management in healthcare, ultimately contributing …
