Finally, some data on blade spreading of hot mixes in Houston, Texas were obtained by correspondence, This memorandum …

An Investigation Of Lean Concrete Mixes As Base Courses For Bituminous Surfaces [Jan. 1951], S. T. Collier Jan 1951

An Investigation Of Lean Concrete Mixes As Base Courses For Bituminous Surfaces [Jan. 1951], S. T. Collier

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Cement concrete bases for pavements with bituminous surfaces are, of course, not new. However, it has been many years since concrete has served this purpose except as a pavement itself ultimately resurfaced after years of service. The outstanding qualities of many roads which developed in this way were obvious without any particular tests, and for many years there apparently was no attempt to evaluate them. Probably structural value was first investigated in tests on airfields in Florida, Ohio and California. Although the original concrete pavements in all cases were heavy in comparison with highway sections, the results of the tests …

Observations On Seal Coats, Tack Coats And Penetration Macadam Construction In 1950, William B. Drake Jan 1951

Observations On Seal Coats, Tack Coats And Penetration Macadam Construction In 1950, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Early in the 1950 construction season the Division of Design requested that the Research Division observe some new methods and materials that were being used in bituminous construction. The projects chosen in most cases represented several of the type throughout the state. There were some instances though where the procedure or material was used in only one project.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of the materials and the methods which were being used. The nature of this study required that only visual inspections be made. Particular emphasis in this report is placed upon observations of …

Investigation Of Stress And Crack Distribution In Concrete Slabs Containing Welded Wire Reinforcement, Joseph H. Senne Jan 1951

Investigation Of Stress And Crack Distribution In Concrete Slabs Containing Welded Wire Reinforcement, Joseph H. Senne

Masters Theses

"Concrete is daily becoming more important as a structural material. However, without steel reinforcement, concrete would never have attained such wide use since, being weak in tension, it must be combined with some other material to take the tension stresses and prevent the tension cracks in the concrete from opening an appreciable amount.

One type of steel reinforcement used particularly for footings, beams and columns is known as deformed bar. In this case deformations are placed on the bars at the time of rolling. These deformations act as mechanical anchorage in preventing the bar from slipping, thus allowing it to …

The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb Jan 1951

The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb

Masters Theses

"Soil is a material that has been formed through the influence of many different natural agencies. The engineer is not so much interested in how the soil was formed, but he does want to know the characteristics of the soil with respect to its use as a structural material. Therefore, the engineer is primarily interested in the physical properties of soils.

Much progress has been made during the past twenty five years in the study of Soil Mechanics, but even today there is a tendency among engineers to think of soil as just a mixture of clay, sand, silt and …

Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan Jan 1951

Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan

Masters Theses

"The writer of this thesis believes that the most important thing next to the original construction cost of a road, is the maintenance cost. It is apparent that the maintenance cost for any given road is directly proportional to the percentage of worn out sections in that road. It is believed that climatic conditions are the very first cause of road failures and that traffic on the road often has a secondary degree of importance in the causing of road surface failures….

It is obvious that extreme heat as well as extreme cold will ruin a road. A heavy traffic …

An Economy Study Of Vierendeel Trusses, Donald Lee Dean Jan 1951

An Economy Study Of Vierendeel Trusses, Donald Lee Dean

Masters Theses

"Since the introduction of the pin connected steel truss in the United States in 1847 as a truss that could be actually designed, there has been very few basic changes in the truss as a structure. True, web members have been sloped or braced in many different ways to best adapt the truss for the structural materials being used, and over the protests of many , pin connections have almost wholly given way to riveted or arc welded connections, however, the basic idea of using all members as two force members has prevailed. Concern over the existence of bending stresses …

A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens, James L. Young Jr., Harvey J. Field Jr. Dec 1950

A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens, James L. Young Jr., Harvey J. Field Jr.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Every creek gulley and raw interrupted by roadway fills and embankments must be provided with an adequate drainage conduit under the pavement. If the natural drainage is impeded or the conduit is not functioning properly, impounded water over-runs the pavement, seeps through the fill, and eventually disintegrates the section or reduces its stability. The topography in Kentucky, through varied sectionally, requires on the average, one cross-drain for every thousand feet of roadway. Obviously, these drainage structures are of considerable economic importance in the highway program, not only from the standpoint of initial construction costs, but also from consideration of the …

Measurement Of Surface Irregularities And Riding Qualities Of High Type Bituminous Pavements, Harvey J. Field Jr. Dec 1950

Measurement Of Surface Irregularities And Riding Qualities Of High Type Bituminous Pavements, Harvey J. Field Jr.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Studies of riding qualities as determined by irregularities in high type bituminous pavements were first treated in Report No. 1 on this subject in December, 1949. At that time interest was centered as much on specifications as on the causes, the thought being that specifications did not provide satisfactory tolerances to produce surfaces with good riding qualities. Specifically, tolerances over relatively short distances longitudinally were though to be at fault.

It was found early in that work that variations in the lateral direction were causing considerable roughness but since longitudinal variations were being studied primarily, no actual measurements were made …

B.P.R. Project On Correlation Of Truck Traffic And Pavement Conditions, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory Sep 1950

B.P.R. Project On Correlation Of Truck Traffic And Pavement Conditions, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Locations for the Test Sections within the Control Sections and as close as possible to the Loadometer Stations established by the Division of Planning have been selected and are described in this report. With but one or two exceptions, there is reasonable certainty that these sections of pavement can be kept in service without major changes for a period of five years. However, there are repairs that should be made on the pavements in two of the sections in order to prevent rapid deterioration that is likely to occur if these are not corrected at the beginning of the study.

Importance Of Unconformities To Oil Occurrence In Montana, Robert E. Evenson Jun 1950

Importance Of Unconformities To Oil Occurrence In Montana, Robert E. Evenson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Although the majority of geologic structures in Montana have been tested in the search for petroleum, only a few have been found to contain commercial quantities of either oil or gas, and with each successive dry hole, producers are becoming more and more wary of investing capital in new wells located on structural features alone. It is apparent that if new oil and gas fields are to be found in Montana, exploration must be done on the basis of something other than structure, or combined with structure.

Foraminifera From The Colorado Shale Near Sunburst, Montana, Frank R. Reynolds

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

One of the many secrets which planet Earth has jealously kept from its inhabitants is the microscopic fossil form known as the foraminifer. It hides in common shale, awaiting the patient and painstaking searcher. In furthering the study of the foraminifera of the Colorado group of formations in Northern Montana, the United States Geological Survey has collected several suites of shale samples from the Sunburst Dome, five to ten miles south of the Canadian border and twenty-five miles north of the city of Shelby, Montana.

A Study Of The Effect Of The Maximum Melt Temperatures Upon The Degree Of Supercooling Of Gallium, Wilfred E. Nagel Jun 1950

A Study Of The Effect Of The Maximum Melt Temperatures Upon The Degree Of Supercooling Of Gallium, Wilfred E. Nagel

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

If, in a system at a given temperature, there should occur a decrease in free energy and this decrease does not take place, then the resulting condition of the system is termed supercooling. A common example of the phenomenon is found in the liquid-to-solid transition of many substances, when the temperature of the liquid may be lowered below its freezing point without solidification. Similar phenomenon occurs in the gas-to- liquid, gas-to-solid, and polymorphic transformations.

Fauna And Stratigraphy Of The Meagher Formation At Three Localities In Southwestern Montana, William J. Van Matre Jun 1950

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The middle Cambrian Meagher limestone of southwest Montana is characterized by mottled members that are finely crystalline in the tan part and microcrystalline in the dark matrix. As seen in the literature, similar mottled limestones are thought to be an arrested stage in the dolomitization, or alteration of limestones.

A Study Of The Divide-Dewey Contact Of The Boulder Batholith, Francis M. Young Jun 1950

A Study Of The Divide-Dewey Contact Of The Boulder Batholith, Francis M. Young

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The batholith is dated as Paleocene or early Eocene. The rocks of the batholith in this area are classified as ranging from quartz-granodiorite to granodiorite. Variation in mineral content causes a chance in color tone from light to dark gray. swarms of inclusions occur in the igneous rock near the contact.

Foraminifera Of The Colorado Shale At Fort Benton, Montana, Robert E. Willson Jun 1950

Foraminifera Of The Colorado Shale At Fort Benton, Montana, Robert E. Willson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Shale is known to be a source-bed for oil, and the Colorado shale which is over 2000 feet thick in places may well be the source for the oil which is now accumulated in the included or closely associated sandstones. A thorough study of the fossil content may not only be helpful in correlation of Cretaceous sediments, but it likewise may be the starting point for studies -which could eventually lead to the discovery of unknown mineral deposits.
