17-Year Report On The Owensboro-Hartford Co-Operative Investigation Of Joint Spacing In Concrete Pavements, Milton Evans Jr., William B. Drake
17-Year Report On The Owensboro-Hartford Co-Operative Investigation Of Joint Spacing In Concrete Pavements, Milton Evans Jr., William B. Drake
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In 1940, the Kentucky Department of Highways constructed an experimental concrete pavement which was one of a group of six built in co-operation with the Bureau of Public Roads by the States of Minnesota, California, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Oregon. The purpose of these projects was to study and evaluate the performance of such pavements over a period of years with specific regard to types of joints and spacings. The Kentucky project, consisting of 6.27 miles, was constructed in Daviess County, beginning approximately 6 miles south of Owensboro on US Route 231 (formerly Ky. Route 71).

Re-Evaluation Of The Kentucky Flexible Pavement Design Criterion, William B. Drake, James H. Havens
Re-Evaluation Of The Kentucky Flexible Pavement Design Criterion, William B. Drake, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Prior to 1948, the criterion in Kentucky for designing the thickness of bituminous pavements was based upon a modified laboratory CBR and the 1942 curves developed by the California Department of Highways. In 1948, the Materials Research Laboratory reported: "An Investigation of Field and Laboratory Methods for Evaluating Sub-grade Support in the Design of Highway Flexible Pavement." Included in that report as a recommended method of thickness design for use in Kentucky was a set of curves based upon an empirical relationship between minimum laboratory CBR and observed pavement performance. These five curves accounted for traffic groups up to 10,000,000 …

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson
Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson
Masters Theses
"The Vierendeel Truss, or Rigid Frame Truss, was first introduced by Professor Arthur Vierendeel in Belgium at the beginning of the century. The Vierendeel Truss differs from the more common triangulated truss in that it contains no diagonal members. The members of the truss are joined rigidly together and each member is required to transmit bending, shear and direct stress.
Professor Vierendeel claimed that Vierendeel Trusses are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than the conventional type of truss. This statement has been challenged by many who believe that this type of truss is fundamentally inferior to the more conventional type. …

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley
The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley
Masters Theses
"Over the last few years an increasing amount of interest has been shown in the use of prestressed concrete. As is true in many new methods of design or construction, the properties of existing materials to be used sometimes fail to meet all the desirable characteristics, and certain modifications might be advantageous. This is certainly true of prestressed concrete design and construction, in which a lower modulus of elasticity accompanied by a minimum loss in strength would be desirable. If a lower modulus of elasticity could be obtained for concrete, a lower prestressing load could be used and still maintain …
Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler
Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler
Masters Theses
"As a study of all types of stabilization would be very lengthy, it was decided to make the object of this research the determination of the effect of the addition of different percentages of calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 on the physical characteristics of a silty swelling sodium montmorillionite clay. The purpose of this addition is to flocculate the clay by utilizing a base exchange between the sodium and calcium ions, and thus change the physical characteristics of the soil. The soil by itself has the characteristics of a fat clay, that is it can be broken …

"This thesis is a study for determining the most economical design for the pavements of Adana Airport. It is a study of redesigning efficient and safe runways and necessary taxiways for a future service life of thirty years.
Adana is Turkey’s 6th largest city. It is a growing city. An airport in Adana also serves tor industrial purposes, serves for transcontinental airway systems. In Adana there is an important Nato Base and in a future war such an airport can be used for military purposes. For these reasons, it was decided to construct a class 4 airport* for the city. …
Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill
Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill
Masters Theses
"The triangular pattern of protection, evacuation and flood plain zoning, as the only truly effective and comprehensive approach to proper flood control, is substantiated in practically all technical publications on this subject by economic and engineering leaders. Yet in actual practice, at the present time, flood plain zoning is not being actively applied by any federal flood control agency and by only one of the forty-nine states faced with this common problem. This lack of direct application was probably best described recently by Walter B. Langbein, Water Resources Division Engineer, U. S. Geological Survey when he said, "Flood Plain Zoning, …

Application Of The Hveem Stabilometer To The Testing Of Open-Graded Bituminous Mixtures, R. A. Hannan
JTRP Technical Reports
This laboratory investigation was conducted with the purposeof determining the applicability of the Hveem Stabilometer to the testing of open-graded bituminous mixtures.
The study was divided into two major sections. The first of these investigated the validity of the Stabilometer displacement measurement when applied to open-graded specimens having large surface air voids. The second portion of the study had two specific purposes: (l) to investigate the stress-strain characteristics of open-graded mixturestested in the Hveem Stabilometer and (2) to determine whether surface voids on the ends of Stabilometer test specimens influenced Hveem stability values.
To check the validity of the displacement …
