Performance Report On Bridge Resurfacings With Silica Sand-Asphalt Mixture, Robert L. Florence Mar 1961

Performance Report On Bridge Resurfacings With Silica Sand-Asphalt Mixture, Robert L. Florence

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

When the Maintenance Division found it necessary to resurface the Clark Memorial and Ashland-Coal Grove Bridges in 1958, a thin, silica sand-asphalt, wearing surface was recommended by the Research Division. The basis of the recommendations was the promising results obtained in laboratory testing and the apparently successful resurfacing of bridges with thin applications of silica sand-asphalt in the New York Area and elsewhere. The design and construction details pertaining to these two projects have been reported previously. This report is a record of the performance of the two projects and of the repair of spalled areas on the deck of …

Analysis Of Pavement Roughness, Rolands L. Rizenbergs Mar 1961

Analysis Of Pavement Roughness, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In earlier progress reports dealing with the development of triaxial acceleration analysis as applied to the evaluation of pavement riding qualities, of which this report is a continuation, riding comfort or discomfort was emphasized. The accelerations monitored then were evaluated in terms of g's per sec., or "jerk" which is considered by some authorities to be a more significant index of comfort. The earlier methods of analysis have been reviewed, and acceleration is considered here to be the most practical parameter to use as a measure of pavement roughness. Most of the equipment and instrumentation has been retained, and the …

Proposed Special Specification For Sand Asphalt, Skid-Resistant, Wearing Course, James H. Havens Mar 1961

Proposed Special Specification For Sand Asphalt, Skid-Resistant, Wearing Course, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Because of the prominence that natural, sandstone, rock asphalt enjoyed in Kentucky during the past 50 years, sand-asphalts and sheet-asphalt mixes have not been used very extensively for paving in Kentucky. This is somewhat unfortunate because the natural, sand stone, rock asphalt has not been available since about 1955 and because there is now a need for a fine-textured, skid-resistance, wearing course for resurfacing work as well as on new pavements. These circumstances, coupled with the realization (1953-54) that surface courses and chip seals using 100% limestone aggregates tend to become slick, have emphasized the need for specifications for sand-asphalts. …

A Method For The Design Of Foundations Supporting Highway Signs, Robert C. Deen Mar 1961

A Method For The Design Of Foundations Supporting Highway Signs, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

With the increased mileage of highways being built to high standards, the resulting high-speed travel requires that more and larger signs be installed to relay to the motoring public information they require. It would be desirable to have a method of design which will result in a foundation involving rather simple construction procedures. It was decided that a cylindrical, non-reinforced concrete foundation with an uniform diameter would be the most advantageous for construction purposes. It should be realized, however, tha(the most efficient shape theoretically is one that has increased diameters at the top and the bottom.

The resistance of a …

Experimental Paving Projects Using Curtiss-Wright’S Coal-Modified, Coal-Tar Binder (First Year Performance), James F. Hardymon Mar 1961

Experimental Paving Projects Using Curtiss-Wright’S Coal-Modified, Coal-Tar Binder (First Year Performance), James F. Hardymon

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report has been prepared as a sequence to the author's publication entitled, "Experimental Paving Projects using Curtiss-Wright's Coal-Modified, Coal-Tar Binder (Construction Phase)."

The previous study was concerned with the selection of test sites, the construction of the test and control sections, and the laboratory investigation performed before and d uring the construction period. This project started in April, 1959, when the Curtiss-Wright Corporation announced the development of a new and superior road-paving binder utilizing bituminous coal. The development was the result of their research program conducted in an effort to find new uses for coal and coal products.

Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Robert C. Deen, Ronald D. Hughes Mar 1961

Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Robert C. Deen, Ronald D. Hughes

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Methods of installation and design criteria have tended to restrict the usefulness of rigid pipe culverts. With the increased mileage of highways which meet high standards, there has been an increase in the number of pipe culverts installed under high fills. This, of course, has accented the need for criteria for the proper design and installation of rigid pipe to obtain the maximum utilization of the pipe strength and to minimize the possible steelements that may occur in the road surface near the pipe installation or in the flow line of the pipe culvert.

In order to provide for an …

Performance Report On Application Of Wire Mesh Reinforcement To Asphaltic Concrete Pavement Overlays, Robert C. Deen, Robert L. Florence Feb 1961

Performance Report On Application Of Wire Mesh Reinforcement To Asphaltic Concrete Pavement Overlays, Robert C. Deen, Robert L. Florence

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

During the past two decades an increasing mileage of portland cement concrete pavements has been resurfaced with bituminous concrete. This has generally proven to be a satisfactory and economical method of restoring, improving and enhancing the traffic service life of the highways. After a short period, however, cracks often begin to appear over the joints and cracks of the underlying concrete pavement. This condition is commonly referred to as "reflection cracking".

The presence of these reflection cracks are undesirable for a number of reasons. The open crack that develops may permit water to penetrate, often causing rave ling of the …

Evaluation Of A Vibratory Roller For Use In Compacting Bituminous Concrete Mixes, Robert C. Deen Feb 1961

Evaluation Of A Vibratory Roller For Use In Compacting Bituminous Concrete Mixes, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

According to Article 4.3.5-D-1 of the 1956 Edition of Kentucky's Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, a minimum of two rollers, one 3-wheeled roller and one tandem roller, shall be required on each state project involving bituminous concrete paving operations. A further requirement of the specifications is that additional rollers will be provided so that there is avaHable "...at least one roller for each 30 tons of the bituminous mixture per hour..." that is laid. This, of course, means that for paving operations involving the laying of the bituminous mixture at rapid rates, the contractor must have available and …

Local Control Of Crows By Trapping, C J. Woodbury Jan 1961

Local Control Of Crows By Trapping, C J. Woodbury

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE common crow seen frequently around farms in the South-West is the raven (Corvus coronoides) whilst the pest of pastoral areas is the true Australian crow (Corvus cecilae).

Farmers and pastoralists, although recognising the importance of these birds as scavengers and destroyers of insects, particularly grasshoppers, sometimes for one reason or another, wish to reduce their numbers over a localised area.

Baiting with phosphorus has been used in the past, but the purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate a type of trap which has become universally known as the "Australian Crow Trap."

Water Conservation On The Farm, John W. Lewis Jan 1961

Water Conservation On The Farm, John W. Lewis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

SMALL scale conservation of water for agricultural use is becoming increasingly important throughout Australia.

As land development intensifies, it is natural that farmers turn to more dams and earthen tanks for stock water and irrigation.

Adequate water is essential to supply the carrying capacities made possible by improved pastures, and where greater quantities of water can be stored, fodder crops, pastures, orchards and vegetables can be irrigated.

Flooding Of Salt Land, C V. Malcolm Jan 1961

Flooding Of Salt Land, C V. Malcolm

Effects Of Solids On Friction Factor In A Sand-Water Mixture, Frank J. Capek Jan 1961

Effects Of Solids On Friction Factor In A Sand-Water Mixture, Frank J. Capek

Masters Theses

"At the present time various industries in both the United States and Europe are very interested in using pipelines as a means of transporting solids. The pumping of solids in pipelines isn't new, however, many of the pipelines in use today were constructed on an empirical basis. This is primarily due to the lack of knowledge concerning the flow properties in fluid-solid mixtures and slurries. With this need for fundamental information in mind, the author made a study on the effect solids have on the friction factor in fluid-solid mixtures.

In this paper various percentages of fine and coarse sand …

A New Type Of Seed Bed Cover For The Market Garden, R R. Bell, M. Hardie Jan 1961

A New Type Of Seed Bed Cover For The Market Garden, R R. Bell, M. Hardie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALL market gardeners use seed beds in their gardening programme. However, the basic design of seed beds and covers has not greatly altered over the years.

The availability of cheap good quality plastic materials has now shown the way to improvements in the design of this type of gardening equipment.

A Crush For Tuberculin Testing Of Cattle, A L. Ripper Jan 1961

A Crush For Tuberculin Testing Of Cattle, A L. Ripper

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALWAYS a useful asset on any farm where livestock are kept, a strongly-constructed crush is essential where tuberculin testing makes it necessary to deal with dry stock, bulls and young animals that have not been previously handled.

The crush described in this article was specially designed for tuberculin testing, but will serve equally well for vaccinating, branding, de-horning or any operation where restraint is necessary.

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil Jan 1961

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil

Reports

Many attempts have been made to derive mathematical expressions relating evaporation and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, to climatological data. IN the United States, the Blaney-Criddle formula is probably the best known for estimating consumptive use (2 and 3). Blaney (1) has also suggested that this formula is suitable for estimating evaporation as measured with a Weather Bureau pan. Other well known formulas are the Penman formulas (10), the Thornthwaite formula (15) and the Hargreaves formulas (8). Halkias, Beihmeyer and Hendrickson (6) suggest that water requirements of crops can be determined from atmometer data. Lowry and Johnson (() in an early …

Investigation Of Vertical Internal Spillways, Paul R. Munger Jan 1961

Investigation Of Vertical Internal Spillways, Paul R. Munger

Masters Theses

"This investigation resulted in the development of a means of predicting the discharge of water through an internal spillway type rockfill dam. From the data obtained during the various tests, equations were developed by which the coefficient of discharge for an internal spillway type rockfill dam can be determined when the core height, rock size and head causing flow are known. The equations give results with an error of less than 5%, which is adequate for engineering works"--Abstract, page 2.

The Effect Of The Ultraviolet Portion Of The Sun Spectrum On Chlorine Residuals In Water Supplies, Tumkur Mohmed Ameer Ahmed Jan 1961

The Effect Of The Ultraviolet Portion Of The Sun Spectrum On Chlorine Residuals In Water Supplies, Tumkur Mohmed Ameer Ahmed

Masters Theses

"The effect of sunlight on chlorine residuals in water supplies was investigated to provide original and basic information of value to the water purification field.

Three different water systems were employed: (a) The Simplified Water System, (b) The Ground Water System, and (c) The Surface Water System. The RS Sunlamp provided an appropriate source of ultraviolet radiation. A 10 mg/1 chlorine concentration was used. The pH values of 7 and 10 and the illumination intensities of 145 and 200 foot candles were employed. Iodometric determination of chlorine residuals was the main parameter used.

It was found that the chlorine residuals …
