Measurement Of Poisson's Ratio And Tangent Modulus Of A Loess, Craig Randall Bowers Jan 1978

Measurement Of Poisson's Ratio And Tangent Modulus Of A Loess, Craig Randall Bowers

Masters Theses

"A series of triaxial tests are used to develop mathematical models for tangent modulus and Poisson's ratio for a remolded loessial soil. These two models are then utilized in a finite element computer program to model the behavior of a shallow foundation placed on compacted loess. Different models for Poisson's ratio gave widely varying load settlement curves, however a constant value of .32 gave results very similar to that given by the experimentally developed model. It was found that the model developed for tangent modulus yielded unreasonable results when utilized in the finite element analysis until a limiting value was …

Characteristics Of Kentucky Drivers, Kenneth R. Agent Jan 1978

Characteristics Of Kentucky Drivers, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The characteristics of the driver population in Kentucky were examined and related to their driving record. Also, the characteristics of high-risk drivers were determined and compared to the driver population. Accident records and responses to a questionnaire distributed to a random sample of the driver population and to high-risk drivers were the data source for the study.

Frequency of accidents was found to be much higher among males than it was among females and was highest among teenage drivers. However, females had a higher accident rate. Teenage drivers had the highest accident rate. The rate decreased for middle-aged drivers and …

Farm Irrigation System Evaluation: A Guide For Management, John L. Merriam, Jack Keller Jan 1978

Farm Irrigation System Evaluation: A Guide For Management, John L. Merriam, Jack Keller

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This manual describes and explains detailed procedures for field evaluation of the performance of several types of sprinkle, surface, and trickle (drip) irrigation systems and of management practices. Most chapters include lists of equipment needed for performing these evaluations, give step-by-step instructions for gathering data in the field, show sample forms for recording and organizing these field data, and present sample studies that demonstrate the entire process. The book includes analyses and recommendations for a few actual case studies.

The introduction states and explains the general concepts of uniformity, efficiency, and management that are used in evaluating each system and …

Design And Operating Criteria For Rural Water Systems, James E. Garton, Gary L. Goodwin, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1978

Design And Operating Criteria For Rural Water Systems, James E. Garton, Gary L. Goodwin, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Rural homesites in the United States require the availability of high quality water. One means of meeting this need is with the rural water district, a system composed of tank storage and a pipe network serving a number of homes. The tanks are filled by pumping during periods of minimal water use and serve as the immediate water source for homes.

Optimum design requires consideration of not only immediate needs and economic factors but also the possibility of expansion at some future date. Accurate prediction of monthly usage rates is sometimes necessary to set contractural needs. Daily water use per …

Sld Potamology Study (S-9), Jerome A. Westphal, Samuel P. Clemence Jan 1978

Sld Potamology Study (S-9), Jerome A. Westphal, Samuel P. Clemence

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Foreword

In this report, the authors discuss factors which relate to flow characteristics of the Middle Mississippi River and its major tributaries. The variety of ways in which man and nature interact to affect the hydrologic regime of the study area are almost infinite. Furthermore, the intensity and direction of man's activity is non-uniform with respect to both time and space. Therefore, on the scale of the study area, the authors assert that 1) it is difficult to verify associations between specific human actions and river responses and 2) at this time, it is impossible to do so in a …
