Across the United States, aging roadway infrastructure has led state departments of transportation (DOTs) to increase their focus on pavement rehabilitation projects. These projects upgrade existing infrastructure to meet the needs of current levels of vehicle use. On interstate rehabilitation projects, maintenance of traffic (MOT) is an especially important consideration. Having a good MOT plan for completing construction work is critical for maintaining facility capacity while ensuring the safety of the traveling public and roadway construction staff. State departments of transportation (DOTs) are embracing the use of clean energy and connectivity (CEC) applications along publicly owned right of way (ROW). Applications such as wind and solar power installations, broadband lines, small cell wireless equipment, electric vehicle charging stations, and technologies related to connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) hold considerable promise for conferring environmental benefits, energy savings, and generating much-needed revenue for DOTs. Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) is a broad domain with publications covering interrelated subdisciplines and considered a key source of knowledge sharing. Previous studies used scientometric methods to assess the current impact of CEM publications; however, there is a need to predict future citations of CEM publications to identify the expected high-impact trends in the future and guide new research efforts. Many state transportation agencies have introduced safety management systems (SMSs) to improve employee safety and health programs. These systems let employees quickly access safety and health policies, procedures, training, responsibilities, resources, and incident reporting tools, often electronically. Instituting a SMS is a critical step in adopting a proactive, data-driven approach to organizational safety. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary’s Office of Safety (SOS) worked with Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to acquire, adapt, and rollout the Boosting Occupational Outcomes in Transportation Safety (BOOTS) system, a new SMS. Transportation practitioners recognize that leveraging knowledge of human factors in road design is critical for delivering safe mobility to the full spectrum of multimodal road users (motorists, pedestrians, micromobility users, transit users). Understanding how psychology, cognition, and behavioral tendencies shape the ways in which different road users interact with one another and the road environment itself is critical for creating design solutions that promote safe and efficient movement. To assist the city of Concord in achieving its housing goals as presented in its general plan, while still meeting the stormwater discharge requirements laid out in the city’s municipal discharge permit, I worked with local developers and consultants to create a spreadsheet modeling tool that allows housing developers to estimate the total cost of green stormwater infrastructure needed to comply with local regulations.

Globally, inefficient management of municipal solid waste, composed primarily of food waste poses concern for human and environmental well-being. Food waste can be converted into hydrogen gas, which can be utilized to generate power without emitting any harmful pollutants. This solution would also help with the issue of disposing of food waste. The conversion of food waste into hydrogen is a practical energy source with potential financial benefits. Methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) and its degraded form tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) are both known carcinogens that have contaminated groundwater aquifers across the United States. MTBE is a synthesized compound, once widely used as an additive in gasoline to increase oxygenation. Because of its popularity, MTBE was released into the environment primarily through fuel combustion and leaking underground storage tanks. These two compounds are known to be recalcitrant to most conventional physico-chemical treatment methods. Antibiotic resistance is a public health crisis. Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are present in drinking water distribution systems. Metals are known selective pressures for antibiotic resistance, and metallic corrosion products are found within drinking water distribution systems due to the corrosion of metal pipes. This project is an exploration of cardboard as a potential material for construction formwork for concrete columns. Multiple material tests were conducted to explore the behavior of cardboard and concrete. Multiple specimens of cardboard were tested for modulus of elasticity, moment of inertia, and tensile strength. Concrete was tested for its apparent lateral fluid pressure under vibration. Cardboard formwork was then designed and constructed based on these tested behaviors. The final design of the formwork consisted of folding cardboard sheets lined with hardboard, supported by wood studs, and tied by plastic banding straps.

This senior project delves into a comprehensive calculation of carbon emissions for both efficiency and sustainability within the realm of modular construction. A material takeoff of the building was performed, allowing for an accurate measurement of materials and their respective EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) values. After material selection, a final carbon calculation of the building was calculated. Carbon emission calculations were performed on the current Revit Model allowing for a full-scale analysis, from Cradle to Gate, of the offsite residential unit. The construction industry significantly contributes to environmental waste, notably through the extensive use of plastic water bottles for hydrating field personnel. This case study investigates the hydration practices of a midsize construction company in the Bay Area, focusing on the volume of plastic waste generated and potential sustainable alternatives. Data were collected via surveys sent to 15 employees, revealing that approximately 130,416 plastic bottles are used annually across 11 project sites. This project came in three unique scopes of work: demolition of the existing barn, proper disposal of materials, and reconfiguration of the enclosure and water lines. This study evaluates the performance, cost-effectiveness, and constructability of two different truss systems by constructing identically sized mockup models. The comparison focuses on the top chord POSI-Strut Metal Web System and the bottom chord truss system, both utilizing Boise Cascade LVL engineered lumber. Our findings reveal that the top chord POSI structure truss system is more cost-effective and time-efficient compared to the bottom chord truss system.
