Failure Mechanism Of Woven Roving Fabric/Vinyl Ester Composites In Freeze–Thaw Saline Environment, Elias Anis Toubia, Sadra Emami, Donald A. Klosterman
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications
This experimental study investigates the degradation mechanisms of a glass fiber-reinforced plastic material commonly used in civil engineering applications. A substantial reduction in tensile, shear, and compression properties was observed after 100 days of freeze–thaw cycling in saline environment (-20°C to 20°C). Non-destructive inspection techniques were progressively conducted on unexposed (ambient condition) and exposed (conditioned) specimens. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed permanent decrease in storage modulus that was attributed to physical degradation of the polymer and/or fiber–matrix interface. This indicated the formation of internal cracks inside the exposed glass fiber-reinforced plastic laminate. The 3D X-ray tomography identified preferred damage sites …

Altered Antibiotic Tolerance In Anaerobic Digesters Acclimated To Triclosan Or Triclocarban, Daniel Elliott Carey, Patrick J. Mcnamara
Altered Antibiotic Tolerance In Anaerobic Digesters Acclimated To Triclosan Or Triclocarban, Daniel Elliott Carey, Patrick J. Mcnamara
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Bench-scale anaerobic digesters were amended to elevated steady-state concentrations of triclosan (850 mg/kg) and triclocarban (150 mg/kg) using a synthetic feed. After more than 9 solids retention time (SRT) values of acclimatization, biomass from each digester (and a control digester that received no antimicrobials) was used to assess the toxicity of three antibiotics. Methane production rate was measured as a surrogate for activity in microcosms that received doses of antibiotics ranging from no-antibiotic to inhibitory concentrations. Biomass amended with triclocarban was more sensitive to tetracycline compared to the control indicating synergistic inhibitory effects between this antibiotic and triclocarban. In contrast, …

Anaerobic Digester Bioaugmentation Influences Quasi Steady State Performance And Microbial Community, Kaushik Venkiteshwaran, K. Milferstedt, J. Hamelin, Daniel Zitomer
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Nine anaerobic digesters, each seeded with biomass from a different source, were operated identically and their quasi steady state function was compared. Subsequently, digesters were bioaugmented with a methanogenic culture previously shown to increase specific methanogenic activity. Before bioaugmentation, different seed biomass resulted in different quasi steady state function, with digesters clustering into three groups distinguished by methane (CH4) production. Digesters with similar functional performance contained similar archaeal communities based on clustering of Illumina sequence data of the V4V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene. High CH4 production correlated with neutral pH and high Methanosarcina abundance, whereas …
Evaluating Soil Properties And Cyclic Loading Effects Of Florida’S Clayey Silty Fine Sand Soils Associated With High Pile Rebound, Ali Fadil M. Omar
Evaluating Soil Properties And Cyclic Loading Effects Of Florida’S Clayey Silty Fine Sand Soils Associated With High Pile Rebound, Ali Fadil M. Omar
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the state of Florida, pile rebound has been encountered while driving large displacement piles. During periods of excessive rebound, the piles could not achieve further penetration and could require an excessive number of blows to advance the pile into the ground. This phenomenon affecting pile driving is called high pile rebound producing construction delays, higher costs; and may lead to pile damage. A comprehensive experimental program was performed involving the characterization and identifications of the typical soils properties associated with high pile rebound during pile installation. The research focuses on the determination of the relationships between high and no-rebound …
Performance Of Continuous Concrete Slabs Reinforced With Hybrid Steel-Basalt Bars, Mohammad Sohayeb Akiel
Performance Of Continuous Concrete Slabs Reinforced With Hybrid Steel-Basalt Bars, Mohammad Sohayeb Akiel
Theses
Continuous steel-reinforced concrete structures are vulnerable to corrosion
Damage when exposed to harsh environment. Although replacing conventional steel entirely with basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars can eliminate corrosion problems, the lower modulus of elasticity of BFRP would reduce serviceability of the structure. The use of hybrid steel-BFRP bars rather than BFRP bars only has a potential to improve the serviceability of continuous concrete
Structures without reducing the deformation capacity. Through experimental testing and numerical simulation, this work aims to examine the structural behavior of two-span concrete specimens internally reinforced with BFRP or hybrid steel-BFRP bars.
A total of 12 two-span …
Behavior Of Double-Sided Concrete Corbels Reinforced With Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars, Ayman Farid Abu Obaida
Behavior Of Double-Sided Concrete Corbels Reinforced With Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars, Ayman Farid Abu Obaida
Theses
Steel reinforced concrete members with small shear span-to-effective depth ratios (a/d), such as corbels; have many classical applications, mostly in tall building, precast structures, factory buildings, bridges, and foundations. Despite extended research works on the performance of such members, little information is available on the performance of these members when reinforced totally with internal fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. The use of FRP bars in reinforcing concrete members would eliminate corrosion problems thus increasing the service life of the structure. This thesis aims at investigating the shear strength of double-sided concrete corbels reinforced with glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The …

Time Dependent Effect Of Drilling Slurries On Side Shear Resistance Of Drilled Shafts, Warren Allen
Time Dependent Effect Of Drilling Slurries On Side Shear Resistance Of Drilled Shafts, Warren Allen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Drilled shafts are cylindrical deep foundations constructed by casting fluid concrete into an excavated hole. These elements rely largely on side shear resistance generated by their substantial diameters and lengths to effectively transfer loads. Therefore, an exceptional concrete to soil interface is essential for proper performance of these structures. The FDOT preferred stabilization fluid, bentonite slurry, has been proven to degrade this interface with increased exposure time due to filter cake formation. For this reason, slurry exposure time has been limited to 36 hours by FDOT. Alternately, polymer slurries do not form a filter cake but rather stabilize excavations through …

Understanding The Effects Of Climate Change On Urban Storm Water Infrastructures In The Las Vegas Valley, Ranjeet Thakali, Ajay Kalra, Sajjad Ahmad
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
The intensification of the hydrological cycle due to climate change entails more frequent and intense rainfall. As a result, urban water systems will be disproportionately affected by the climate change, especially in such urban areas as Las Vegas, which concentrates its population, infrastructure, and economic activity. Proper design and management of storm water facilities are needed to attenuate the severe effects of extreme rainfall events. The North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program is developing multiple high-resolution projected-climate data from different combinations of regional climate models and global climate models. The objective of this study was to evaluate existing storm …

Feasibility Study Of Land Cover Classification Based On Normalized Difference Vegetation Index For Landslide Risk Assessment, Thilanki Dahigamuwa, Qiuyan Yu, Manjriker Gunaratne
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Unfavorable land cover leads to excessive damage from landslides and other natural hazards, whereas the presence of vegetation is expected to mitigate rainfall-induced landslide potential. Hence, unexpected and rapid changes in land cover due to deforestation would be detrimental in landslide-prone areas. Also, vegetation cover is subject to phenological variations and therefore, timely classification of land cover is an essential step in effective evaluation of landslide hazard potential. The work presented here investigates methods that can be used for land cover classification based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), derived from up-to-date satellite images, and the feasibility of application …
