Development, Validation, And Utilization, Of A Long-Term Nearshore Synthetic Wave Record, Sergio A. Pena

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The need for a consistent and accurate production of long-term nearshore wave record is discussed. With multiple decades of offshore hindcasts and long, continuous data sets available, it is possible to create a nearshore synthetic wave record. The Brevard County coastline offers an area with a high quality 62-year long offshore hindcast, as well as an 11-year long and nearly continuous high-resolution nearshore wave record to compare with model performance. This thesis presents the steps in the development and performance of the synthetic nearshore wave record produced. A novel approach was used to compare, validate and calibrate this type of …

Testing Coulwave For Use In Modeling Cross-Shore Sand Transport And Beach Profile Evolution, Patrick Michael Cooper Jan 2019

Testing Coulwave For Use In Modeling Cross-Shore Sand Transport And Beach Profile Evolution, Patrick Michael Cooper

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Realistic, reliable, and effective modeling of cross-shore sediment transport is not present in the current literature. Building that model requires the accurate recreation of breaking wave processes in the nearshore. To develop that first step for an as-yet-to-be-designed model, multiple phase-resolving wave transformation algorithms are reviewed for in-depth investigation. The COULWAVE model is selected for robust testing. Testing of the COULWAVE model shows that, although capable of recreating realistic results, it does not adequately describe major wave characteristics in the surf zone, across a wide range of conditions, to warrant use in a future cross-shore sediment transport model.

The Mechanics Of Precision Presplitting, Anthony Joseph Konya Jan 2019

The Mechanics Of Precision Presplitting, Anthony Joseph Konya

Doctoral Dissertations

"Precision Presplitting is a widely used method of presplit blasting for the mining and construction industries. In recent years considerable effort has gone into the development of empirical equations based on field data to be able to better design the Precision Presplit for various rock types and structural environments. However, the most widely discussed theory about the mechanics of the presplit formation, that of shockwave collisions, does not appear to be applicable for this method of presplitting.

This research has disproven this theory based on insufficient magnitude of the shockwave from modeling with basic wave mechanics. Other authors have suggested …

Thermomechanical Analysis Of Rock Asperity In Fractures Of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, Chao Zeng Jan 2019

Thermomechanical Analysis Of Rock Asperity In Fractures Of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, Chao Zeng

Doctoral Dissertations

"Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) offer great potential for dramatically expanding the use of geothermal energy and become a promising supplement for fossil energy. The EGS is to extract heat by creating a subsurface system to which cold water can be added through injection wells. Injected water is heated by contact with rock and returns to the surface through production well. Fracture provides the primary conduit for fluid flow and heat transfer in natural rock. Fracture is propped by fracture roughness with varying heights which is called asperity. The stability of asperity determines fracture aperture and hence imposes substantial effect on …

An Analysis Of Hydroacoustic Transmission Loss Associated With Marine Pile Driving, Jonathan Paul Berube Jan 2019

An Analysis Of Hydroacoustic Transmission Loss Associated With Marine Pile Driving, Jonathan Paul Berube

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There has been a growing concern in recent years about the effects of anthropogenic noise due to marine pile driving on underwater wildlife. Current guidelines for mitigating hydroacoustic effects associated with these events are based upon relatively simple transmission loss formulations. The advantage to these guidelines is that computing transmission loss using their prescribed methods is not labor intensive, but their disadvantage is that they may not take all variables into account. Because of this, it may be possible to improve transmission loss computations. To better-characterize marine pile driving sound transmission loss, a unique in-water instrumentation system was developed. This …

Wind Load Analysis Of A High-Rise Building By Computational Fluid Dynamics, Canh Thiet Phung Jan 2019

Wind Load Analysis Of A High-Rise Building By Computational Fluid Dynamics, Canh Thiet Phung

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

As new buildings become taller due to limited land area, often irregular in shapes for esthetics and some design constraints, wind load formula provided in design codes/standards cannot be applied because of the limitations. Wind tunnel test (WTT) is thus the suggested approach to obtain appropriate wind load for the design of such buildings. However, WTT is costly and time-consuming as it often requires much preparation of the small-scale model of the target building, instrumentation, and numerous realistic blocks of surrounding buildings (SBs). In this study, the CFD's accuracy will be evaluated by comparing its results to WTT by a …

Modified Response Spectrum Analysis For Computing Seismic Demands Of Multi-Tower Building Sharing A Common Podium, Tarek Youssef

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

To design irregular tall buildings, performance-based design (PBD) approach, which requires nonlinear response history analysis (NLRHA), is the most accurate method. However, PBD approach is not always used in the current design practice because of its complexity, and as allowed in ASCE 7-16, design engineer can use code-based approach such as response spectrum analysis (RSA) procedure. This paper aims to investigate the accuracy of RSA procedure when applied to irregular tall buildings, and in particular for multi-tower buildings sharing a common podium. Also, a modified response spectrum analysis (MRSA) procedure previously proposed for computing shear demand in regular tall buildings, …

A Study On Intermediate Debonding For Steel Beams Strengthened With Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plates, Tosporn Prasertsri Jan 2019

A Study On Intermediate Debonding For Steel Beams Strengthened With Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plates, Tosporn Prasertsri

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

There are limited previous works focusing on the occurrence of intermediate debonding in steel beams strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plates. Tested beams in the past experiments invoked an intermediate debonding by creating notch in steel beams. An anchorage system at FRP termination points was installed on some tested beams in literature. This research uses an initial bond defect to induce an intermediate debonding at the FRP-steel interface. The bond behavior of FRP-steel interface was investigated through the FRP-steel joints under the single lap shear testing. A four-point bending test was conducted to examine the flexural properties of FRP-strengthened …
