Building Transportation Systems To Connect And Renew North St. Louis, Dustin Riechmann
Building Transportation Systems To Connect And Renew North St. Louis, Dustin Riechmann
Purdue Road School
Project Connect is a significant infrastructure investment initiative that promotes the revitalization and redevelopment of North St. Louis City. Spurred by the relocation of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency West, a U.S. DOD support facility; multiple related infrastructure projects; and proximity of a new major league soccer stadium, the initiative will add multi-modal transportation and optimize connectivity for the local road system. This session dives into Project Connect’s extensive improvements, including the major reconstruction of an inter-change along I-64

How Are They Doing? J-Turns In The Wild, Taylor Ruble, Alan Holderread
Purdue Road School
Restricted access U-turn (RCUT) and J-turn intersections are fairly new to Indiana. In the state system, four constructed J-turns have been in service for at least a year. This presentation will report on their effectiveness in crash reduction as well as address common fears and misconceptions about traffic diversion and their use by trucks. We will also speak on the public reception of a J-turn in the LaPorte District.

Being A Good Teaming Partner, Greg Kicinski, Bryan Donze, Ken Olson
Purdue Road School
Today’s project development process requires firms to regularly team together, necessitating development of strategies that result in maximum collaboration and coordination. As a traditional prime firm (American Structurepoint, Inc.) and a traditional sub firm (Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC), we will share best practices that we’ve learned from working with each other and a variety of other firms across the Midwest. We will elaborate on communication and documentation, project schedule and roles, joint QA/QC procedures, maximum responsive-ness, and trustworthy relationships.
Pavement Recycling And Community Crossings, Patrick Conner, Megan Yount
Pavement Recycling And Community Crossings, Patrick Conner, Megan Yount
Purdue Road School
Since 2016, the State of Indiana has awarded $400 million in Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) funds to support local road and bridge projects throughout Indiana. Several projects have applied pavement recycling processes to rehabilitate and reconstruct urban and rural road-ways utilizing INDOT-developed specifications for full depth reclamation (FDR), cold in-place recycling (CIR), and cold central plant recycling (CCPR). This presentation covers how these construction processes were implemented with these grants to fix many pavements across the state.

Marion County Summer 2019 Work Zone Coordination And Closing The Interstate, Roland Fegan
Purdue Road School
This is the story of a very aggressive construction season in Marion County, Indiana, resulting from extreme winter damage on and around I-465: how we bundled the contracts into lettable packages, overcame a rainy May and June with schedule modifications, and accomplished so much while protecting the workers. Work zone safety will be discussed—in particular the challenges of back-of-queue crashes—and a summary of results and future actions for INDOT and industry will be presented.
Underbody Scrapers And Wings, Bryan Pickworth
Underbody Scrapers And Wings, Bryan Pickworth
Purdue Road School
Farmington Hills DPW has developed an award-winning winter operations program by transitioning away from traditional methods. Considering the type and amount of snow in Michigan, you would find it surprising to know that Farmington Hills rarely hooks up its front plows; instead, the DPW relies heavily on the use of underbody scrapers and side wings for snow removal. Join us for a discussion.

Interfacial Shear Bond Strength Between Steel H-Piles And Polymer Concrete Jackets, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Kyle Brown, Mohamed Elgawady
Interfacial Shear Bond Strength Between Steel H-Piles And Polymer Concrete Jackets, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Kyle Brown, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Steel H-piles have been used widely in bridge construction throughout the U.S. because of their relatively large load-carrying capacity while occupying a small area. However, many H-piles suffer from corrosion, which may lead to abrupt collapse. A cost-effective repair technique, including encasing the corroded region of the steel pile into a concrete jacket, which acts as an alternative load path for the applied axial load, has been used by several state Departments of Transportation. Methyl methacrylate polymer concrete (MMA-PC) is a type of concrete that is commonly used as a repair material. However, there is limited research on the assessment …

Keeping ‘Em Rolling... From Strollers To Scooters To Semis: Maumee Street Streetscape Improvement, Mike Rechtorik, Amanda Cope
Purdue Road School
Keeping the variety of wheels a-turnin' . . . and a-turnin’ safely in Angola, Indiana, was key when designing the streetscape improvements to Maumee Street, a federal truck route running through the heart of the downtown district. Today, safety challenges have been addressed, and pedestrians stroll along the ADA-compliant sidewalks (originally designed more than a century ago to accommodate the loading and unloading of horse-drawn buggies) adjacent to vehicular traffic that includes a large volume of semi-trucks. Join us for a discussion.

Rehabilitation Of Low-Volume Roads Using Fdr, William Flora
Rehabilitation Of Low-Volume Roads Using Fdr, William Flora
Purdue Road School
NDOT has used full-depth reclamation to re-habilitate low-volume roads on the state-maintained system. FDR improves the life and structural strength of the pavement at reasonable life-cycle cost. This presentation looks at the strength improvement by comparing before-and-after falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing of pavement sections. In addition, it compares the life-cycle cost of an FDR to a traditional pavement treatment, such as recon-struction or replacement.
