Changes In Plasma Potassium During Graded Aerobic Exercise And Two Hours Of Recovery, Matthew S. Tenan, Robert G. Mcmurray, Peter Hosick, Anthony C. Hackney Jan 2010

Changes In Plasma Potassium During Graded Aerobic Exercise And Two Hours Of Recovery, Matthew S. Tenan, Robert G. Mcmurray, Peter Hosick, Anthony C. Hackney

Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works

Plasma potassium increases with exercise intensity. Subjects (n=8) were monitored for changes in plasma potassium while exercising at progressively increasing steady-state intensities and for two hours of recovery. Plasma potassium was significantly increased at 100% of VO2peak compared to 20% and 40% (p< 0.01). Plasma potassium at 60 and 120 minutes of recovery from exercise was significantly higher than 6 minutes post exercise (p< 0.015). These results support the supposition that high-intensity exercise may lead to hyperkalemia, and also indicates that increases in [K+] occur up to two hours after the cessation of exercise, a newly reported phenomenon. Although, high levels of plasma potassium are known to cause cardiac abnormalities and related events, exercise induced changes in normal healthy adults are not currently believed to have clinical implications.

This article describes three different ways of using paraeducators during adapted physical education. (1.) Having paraeducators read a portion of the lesson plan that describes the desired support towards lesson objectives. Paraeducators then assist all students when needed. (2.) Assigning specific modifications for paraeducators through the IEP process. These modifications maybe designed for a single child and listed in the lesson plan. The paraeducator then provides specific support for a particular child. (3.) Using video modeling to create media clips for paraeducators to view prior to assisting children during the lesson. The media clips include modeling of key lesson concepts …

Safe Medication Use Among Hispanic College Students: Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviors, Tania Guadalupe Quiroz Jan 2010

Safe Medication Use Among Hispanic College Students: Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviors, Tania Guadalupe Quiroz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

College students are at increased risk of medication errors. Research suggests that young adults are active users of over-the- counter (OTC) medications and other products that may increase the risk for negative health outcomes. Due to language and cultural factors, the issue is particularly relevant in U.S.-Mexico border communities. This casual-comparative study examined knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding medication use among Hispanic college students. Data was collected through a survey developed by …

Harmful and detrimental effects associated with college student alcohol use have been well documented in scholarly research, the popular press, numerous government- produced reports and by medical associations. This dissertation, which is formatted in two sections, provides an overview of the potential role of parents as part of current multidimensional campus alcohol prevention efforts. Specifically, this dissertation utilizes the Health Belief Model to explore the degree to …

Computer Simulation Of Low Temperature Plasma., Low Shu San

Student Works (2010-2019)

Glow discharges are used in a large number of applications, and it is one of the most common plasmas used in industry. The most important application of glow discharges is probably in microelectronic industry, and material technology. Studies were conducted on the effect of various parameters such as driving voltage, pressure and interelectrode gap length on the fundamental properties of the glow discharge plasma using the XPDP1 simulation code developed by UC Berkeley. The XPDP1 code is a one-dimensional bounded electrostatic simulation code for parallel-plate capacitively coupled plasma system, with an external coupled circuit which may include R, L, and …

Faculty Publications

The Guided Discovery Style (F) of teaching is a highly developed trial-and-error process that is organized by the teacher to lead, by questions or challenging tasks, the student-learner to discover a predetermined correct answer (performance response, concept application, strategy resolution or the impact of a rule on play). The teacher serves as an instructional guide by presenting a series of questions, problems and challenges that channel the student-learner to a desired performance solution. Each instructional episode is based on the prior response and readiness to move to the next challenge.

When these elements are blended artistically with a variety of classroom management skills, necessary equipment, instructional support resources, behavior management rules and high expectations in a nurturing environment, the teacher has created the best possible learning atmosphere for each individual student.

Below, the authors have identified twelve important instructional elements for teachers to incorporate …
