Perceptions In A Changing World: Teachers' Attitudes Towards The Implementation Of Educational Innovations With A Focus On Social And Emotional Learning, Tiana Holmes Oct 2017

Perceptions In A Changing World: Teachers' Attitudes Towards The Implementation Of Educational Innovations With A Focus On Social And Emotional Learning, Tiana Holmes

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine teachers’ attitudes toward the implementation of educational innovations - with an explicit focus on social and emotional learning (SEL) and new teacher mentor (NTM) programs. Because teachers are primarily responsible for absorbing new information and implementing educational programs directly to students, their attitudes may influence how the program is perceived, the program’s delivery, and may also impact the program’s outcomes. Support for novice teachers is often regarded as necessary and warranted in many schools, and researchers unfailingly reveal findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of SEL; specifically in traditional school settings (Slaten, Irby, …

Staying Connected: Measuring The Impact Of Technology Integration On Student Engagement And Achievement At The Middle Level, Jaclyn M. Swayne

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Knowing how technologies impact student engagement and achievement is vital. The present study validated and added to the existing knowledge in determining to what extent specific levels of technology integration impact student engagement. It also addressed how specific levels of technology integration impact student achievement in middle level English Language/Arts and mathematics classrooms using 1:1 tablet technology. The descriptive study with statistical analysis provided quantitative evidence to educational leaders on the extent to which increasing levels of technology integration can increase student engagement. This evidence was generated using classroom observation data and Fisher’s exact cross-tabulation analysis. The study also provided …

The themes were then discussed under the light of theories resulting …

Teaching Qualitative Research Online To Leadership Students: Between Firm Structure And Free Flow, Maja Miskovic, Elena Lyutykh Oct 2017

Teaching Qualitative Research Online To Leadership Students: Between Firm Structure And Free Flow, Maja Miskovic, Elena Lyutykh

The Qualitative Report

The US National Science Foundation (2013, 2015) surveys of earned doctorates in education show that between 2003 and 2014, over 20,000 degrees were granted in a field broadly defined as Educational Administration. It is then important to discuss the pedagogies of teaching not only the content area courses for educational leaders, but research as well. We highlight the intertwined tensions between different discourses: the ways of thinking about research that our students bring to the online classrooms, the course goals that we aspire to achieve, and the ways we teach qualitative research online. In doing so, we see our classes …

Cross-Subsidization Of Teacher Pension Costs: The Impact Of Assumed Market Returns, Robert M. Costrell, Josh B. Mcgee Oct 2017

Cross-Subsidization Of Teacher Pension Costs: The Impact Of Assumed Market Returns, Robert M. Costrell, Josh B. Mcgee

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

It is well-known that public pension plans exhibit substantial cross-subsidies, both within cohorts, e.g. from early leavers to those who retire at the “sweet spot”, and across cohorts, through unfunded liabilities. However, the cross-subsidies within and across cohorts have never been provided in an integrated format. This paper provides such a framework, based on the gaps between normal cost rates for individuals and the uniform contribution rates for the cohort. Since the unfunded liabilities and associated cross-subsidies across cohorts derive from overly optimistic actuarial assumptions, we focus on the historically most important such assumption, the rate of return. We present …

Re-Thinking Apprenticeship In Art Education, Kelly Nicole Denisson Oct 2017

Re-Thinking Apprenticeship In Art Education, Kelly Nicole Denisson

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Many students face isolation and meaningless experiences in their day-to-day routine in schools. The increasing focus on standardized tests and academic performance reinforces competition and extrinsic rewards for learning. This diminishes opportunities for creative thought, development of communities, and genuine meaningful connection to content, leaving students feeling disconnected to learning and their peers. Art education has long been an outlet in which to collaborate, embrace diversity, and transform throughout the learning process. This study uses the Arita Tradition of Porcelain, its instructional practices, community of practice, and studio classroom environment as a model for apprenticeship in art education. Participant experiences …

Readiness For Inter-Institutional Collaboration: A Path Forward For Online Learning, Robert Arthur Paulson Phd, Shirley Ann Freed

Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea

An environment conducive to inter-institutional collaboration greater utilizes intellectual and structural assets for the good of all in a growing learning community. As small colleges and universities struggle to maintain financial viability many have recognized the positive impact a collaborative environment has for all aspects of the institution. The leaders in this transition from autonomous to collaborative have been librarians and their use of technology to share databases and other assets. Organizations like the Concordia University System and The Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance have been sharing structural and intellectual assets to reduce costs and risks in offering online …

Dialogic Interactions That Support Learning And Motivation: A Phenomenological Study Of High School Teachers’ Experiences During Reflective Dialogue, Sandra Metzger Oct 2017

Dialogic Interactions That Support Learning And Motivation: A Phenomenological Study Of High School Teachers’ Experiences During Reflective Dialogue, Sandra Metzger

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

When teachers skillfully interact in reflective dialogue, they experience professional learning and motivation. However, teachers’ interactional skills are often not data-informed. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study is to provide descriptive data on (a) how high school teachers experience the dialogic interaction within reflective dialogue, (b) what evidence of learning is present in the interaction, and (c) how self-directed motivation is supported in the interaction. The conceptual framework for this study consists of learning theories from Dewey and Mezirow and the Self-Determination theory of motivation from Deci and Ryan. Three sessions were conducted with two teams of two teachers …

Factors That Influence Teachers To Remain In Priority Schools In Arkansas, Heather R. Allison Oct 2017

Factors That Influence Teachers To Remain In Priority Schools In Arkansas, Heather R. Allison

Student Theses and Dissertations

Teacher retention is a pressing issue for school districts throughout the nation. Attrition, combined with an older teaching population and increasing student enrollment, is causing a teacher shortage (Suell & Piotrowski, 2007). This teacher shortage is exacerbated in low-performing school. Many studies have been conducted to determine why teachers are leaving the classrooms of low-performing schools, but very few have examined the subject of why they are staying. This study attempted to identify teacher demographics and factors that exist in teachers who have five or more years of experience working in a Priority School in Arkansas. The results of the …

The Prevalence Of Insomnia On School Principals And Superintendents In Missouri, Regina Johnson Williams Oct 2017

The Prevalence Of Insomnia On School Principals And Superintendents In Missouri, Regina Johnson Williams

Student Theses and Dissertations

Chronic insomnia can lead to depression, anxiety, cognitive difficulties, workplace absenteeism, underperformance, and high employee turnover as well as medical issues such as Alzheimer’s, hypertension, myocardial infarction, obesity, and diabetes. Researchers have argued that healthful sleep is the most important factor in predicting longevity over diet, exercise, and heredity. Previous studies consider insomnia but do not address the specific issue of the levels of insomnia experienced by school principals and superintendents in Missouri. The purpose of the study was to investigate the levels in school administrators based on gender, age, ethnicity, experience in the current role, the level of professional …

Tadoku: Extensive Reading In Japanese, Rika Saito

Academic Leadership Academy

My Instructional Development project is Tadoku 多読 that translates as Extensive Reading (ER) for Japanese language education. Tadoku or ER refers to “many readings” “reading a lot,” the idea of which in foreign/second language teaching has been practiced and theorized since 1950 in the US and Europe. In Japan, ER classes and promotional events, such as workshops and presentations for instructors, are sponsored by a Non-profit organization “Tagengo Tadoku” or “Tadoku Supporters.” This organization was established in 2002 by Japanese educators who originally explored effective reading methods in English language education. Tadoku Supporters later developed ER methods in Japanese.
