In the Japanese culture, tattoos began as a form of punishment for criminals, while tattoos in the American culture began as a display of one’s title as sailor. Throughout time, tattoos in Japan became more synonymous with pride and loyalty, albeit still being primarily used by criminals and members of Japanese gangs. In American cultures, tattoos shifted from a sailor's declaration and pride towards a personal statement by the individual wearing the tattoo. Guinea Pig (ギニーピッグ) is an anthology series of six body horror films created and released in Japan from 1985 to 1990, all connected by a common theme of bodily experimentation and destruction. The series has maintained a controversial legacy due to its portrayal of intense misogynistic violence. However, upon closer examination, the films reveal subtle moments of patriarchal critique when viewed as a cohesive unit. Using Cynthia Freeland’s framework for creating feminist readings of horror films and Eve Sedgwick’s concept of reparative reading, this research aims to highlight those moments of subversion in order to create a more progressive feminist …

When WWII began, these Nisei-led groups collaborated with the War Relocation Authority (WRA), which created a narrative of Japanese American compliance. The arts have long been tools used to prop up political visions, and Japan’s traditional crafts are no exception to this trend. Japanese ceramics in particular have enjoyed, or perhaps endured, era after era of patronage by successive governments and movements over their more than a millennium of history. Appropriated by a wave of nationalism in the Meiji period, the rokkoyō (six ancient kilns), long famous for their rustic style and acclaimed tea wares, were converted along with many other traditional crafts into symbols of the Japanese national spirit. After the Meiji Restoration (1868 - ), there were three major Westernization periods in Japanese clothing history. The first was the period when Japan re-opened its ports to the West, the second was when the Great Kanto Earthquake hit eastern Japan (1912). During the first and the second periods, Western style clothing was added to the existing upper- to mid-class kimono culture. The third period was post-World War II period when the Japanese lost most of their clothing during the war as they were burnt in bombings, bartered for foods, or forced to alter the shape.

Nourishing Connections: Chinese Immigrant Identity In Tokyo Through Commensality And Hospitality, Sarai Brown

This paper explores how Chinese immigrants in Tokyo, Japan preserve their cultural identity through practices of commensality and hospitality in stark contrast to Japanese culture. In Chinese culture, hospitality – mainly acts of food sharing – is how kinship relations are built and maintained, eventually growing into an important hierarchy network that ultimately builds a fully realized identity created out of communal belonging. Japanese culture in this sense is not as hospitable, deeming food-sharing as an extremely private and high-risk affair that is considered low-risk in Chinese contexts.

Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese. Personal interactions between Black and Japanese musicians constituted a process of “grassroots globalization” that circumvented the dominance of American mass media in representing African …

During the early years of the so-called “Fifteen Year War” (1931–1945), Japanese women and girls created senninbari when men received draft notices to serve. Often worn around soldiers’ waists underneath their uniforms, these sash-shaped talisman were embroidered with 1,000 red knots, each knot made by a woman. In a time when the Japanese government censored dissenting voices against its militaristic and nationalistic foreign and domestic policies, this government-encouraged gesture of stitching senninbari became one of the few ways in which women could voice their personal protests within patriarchal gender expressions (良妻賢母 “good wife, wise mother”). งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะการใช้และการเลี่ยงใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกในภาษาญี่ปุ่น ภาษาไทย และภาษาอังกฤษ โดยให้ความสำคัญกับการวิเคราะห์ประเด็นเกี่ยวกับสัดส่วนการใช้ จุดร่วมการใช้ ลักษณะการใช้ที่พบเฉพาะในแต่ละภาษา และลักษณะการเลี่ยงใช้ในแต่ละภาษา งานวิจัยนี้วิเคราะห์ผ่านคลังข้อมูลคู่ขนานที่ทำการเก็บข้อมูลจากเรื่อง “แฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์กับนักโทษแห่งอัซคาบัน” ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ภาษาญี่ปุ่นและภาษาอังกฤษมีการใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกในสัดส่วนที่มากและใกล้เคียงกัน ในขณะที่ภาษาไทยพบสัดส่วนการใช้ที่น้อยกว่าอีกสองภาษา ส่วนจุดร่วมในการใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกของทั้งสามภาษาคือคำกริยาที่สร้างความเปลี่ยนแปลงให้กับประธานของประโยคและมีความเป็นสกรรมสูง โดยมีแนวโน้มเป็นคำกริยาความหมายเชิงลบ และประธานที่ใช้มักเป็นคำนามที่มีชีวิต ส่วนลักษณะการใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกที่พบเฉพาะในแต่ละภาษา กรณีภาษาไทยพบลักษณะการบรรยายผลลัพธ์จากการถูกกระทำร่วมกับหน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกโดยใช้โครงสร้าง “ถูก+กริยา(กระทำ)+ผลลัพธ์” กรณีภาษาญี่ปุ่นใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกเพื่อรักษาความเป็นประธานต่อเนื่องของประโยค (subject continuity) และกรณีภาษาอังกฤษใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกร่วมกับคำนามที่ไม่มีชีวิต ส่วนลักษณะการเลี่ยงใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจก กรณีภาษาญี่ปุ่นเลี่ยงใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกโดยใช้คำนามมากที่สุด ส่วนภาษาอังกฤษจะเลี่ยงใช้โดยใช้บุรุษสรรพนามร่วมกับหน่วยสร้างกรรตุวาจก ในขณะที่ภาษาไทยพบประเภทของหน่วยสร้างที่นำมาใช้ทดแทนหน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกได้มากที่สุด เช่น หน่วยสร้าง “มี”, หน่วยสร้างกรรตุวาจก, หน่วยสร้าง “ให้” เป็นต้น โดยหน่วยสร้าง “มี” เป็นหน่วยสร้างที่สามารถใช้ทดแทนหน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจก “ถูก” ได้ในระดับหนึ่ง

งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาการตั้งชื่อท่าไม้ตายที่พบในหนังสือการ์ตูนหรือมังงะทั้งในฉบับภาษาญี่ปุ่นและฉบับแปลภาษาไทยว่ามีขนบการตั้งชื่ออย่างไร และเมื่อแปลเป็นภาษาไทยแล้วจะมีการใช้ขนบหรือมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างไรบ้าง ผู้วิจัยรวบรวมกับศึกษาท่าไม้ตายในมังงะภาษาญี่ปุ่นจำนวน 16 เรื่อง และศึกษาฉบับแปลภาษาไทยจำนวน 10 เรื่อง รวมทั้งหมด 1,435 ท่าในฉบับภาษาญี่ปุ่น และ 636 ท่าในฉบับภาษาไทย และได้ทำการวิเคราะห์ประเด็นหลักทั้งสองภาษาโดยรวมจำนวน 8 ประเด็นได้แก่ 1) จำนวนคำ 2) วลีชื่อเฉพาะ 3) หน่วยเสียงพยางค์ 4) รูปเขียนตัวอักษร 5) ตัวอักษรรูบิ (ルビ) 6) ภาพพื้นหลังกับเครื่องหมาย 7) การใช้ภาษาบาลี - สันสกฤตในชื่อภาษาไทย 8) กลวิธีการแปลชื่อท่าไม้ตาย นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยศึกษาว่าขนบการตั้งชื่อท่าไม้ตายมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลาหรือไม่ด้วย ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) จำนวนคำในท่าไม้ตายภาษาญี่ปุ่นจะนิยมการใช้ 2 คำ เพื่อความกระชับ ในขณะที่ชื่อภาษาไทยจะมีการใช้จำนวนคำที่ยาวกว่า 2) วลีชื่อเฉพาะในท่าไม้ตายภาษาญี่ปุ่นนิยมใช้คำนามกับคำนาม ในขณะที่ภาษาไทยนิยมใช้คำกริยากับคำนามมากกว่าเพื่อขายความให้คนไทยเข้าใจ 3) หน่วยเสียงพยางค์ของทั้งสองภาษานิยมการใช้ 10 พยางค์ขึ้นไป แต่ฉบับภาษาไทยจะนิยมการใช้ 5-6 พยางค์ในแต่ละเรื่องมากกว่า 4) ชื่อท่าไม้ตายภาษาญี่ปุ่นนิยมตัวอักษรคันจิมากที่สุด รองลงมาคือคาตากานะและฮิรางานะกับคันจิ 5) ตัวอักษรรูบินิยมการใช้ตัวอักษรฮิรางานะเพื่อบอกวิธีอ่านทั่วไปมากกว่า 6) ภาพพื้นหลังกับเครื่องหมายมีความสัมพันธ์กับชื่อท่าไม้ตาย และการใช้เครื่องหมายก็มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลาด้วย 7) ภาษาบาลี-สันสกฤตพบการนิยมใช้ในชื่อของท่าไม้ตายฉบับแปล และการเลือกใช้จะขึ้นกับรูปแบบการแปลของผู้แปลแต่ละคนหรือสำนักพิมพ์นั้นๆ 8) กลวิธีการแปลนิยมการแปลแบบตรงตัวมากที่สุด นอกจากนี้ยังพบการแปลที่สร้างคำศัพท์ใหม่โดยอิงจากภาพพื้นหลังหรือบริบทของเนื้อเรื่องด้วย 9) ท่าไม้ตายในช่วงยุคค.ศ. 1980 จะเน้นรูปภาพที่แสดงถึงการตะโกนเสียงดังมากกว่า และท่าไม้ตายที่มีขนาดสั้น อย่างไรก็ตามท่าไม้ตายในยุคค.ศ. 2000 นั้นนิยมการใช้คำบรรยายมากกว่า และชื่อท่าไม้ตายมีความยาวมากขึ้นด้วย

Forced by family circumstances to abandon his samurai status, Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848) found his niche in life as a writer of popular fiction, eventually becoming the most prolific author of works in the yomihon genre, which consisted largely of historical romances. His dream of eventually restoring his family to its hereditary status is reflected in many of his works, beginning especially with Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki (Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon), a novel appearing serially in sixty-eight chapters between 1807 and 1811 whose hero, the historical Minamoto no Tametomo (1139-1170), is drawn from a variety of sources, both standard …

This study used a survey to investigate self-study and university-enrolled Chinese learners’ habits in studying Chinese vocabulary in order to determine what study methods influence a.) learners’ confidence in learning Chinese vocabulary and b.) what aspects of Chinese vocabulary they consider easy or difficult. We were particularly interested in seeing what the data had to say about students’ attitudes towards characters and the written language, given that the field of Chinese language pedagogy is known for a stronger focus on the written language as opposed to the spoken language. This article analyzes Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes’ Retrato calado (Silent Portrait) published in 1988, considering the theoretical discussions on testimonio's epistemology—addressing the challenge of narrating trauma and the risk of stylization. It compares Fortes' memoir with Fernando Gabeira's O que é isso, companheiro? (What's This, Comrade?) from 1979, examining diverse approaches to capturing historical trauma through literature and its impact on collective memory about Brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985).

This paper highlights the significance of physical proximity and the potentiality of socio-spatial situations as tools to enrich study abroad programs. Particular attention is given to street art and the public space. While, studying on-site can be somewhat uncomfortable, it can potentially prompt unique reflections, enhance student’s learning and encourage introspection. Being on-site provides the opportunity to come into contact and to connect with the physical objects and their environment. It enables a multisensory and immersive embodied experience. Leveraging art for communicative educational activities can facilitate a participatory experience, promote critical thinking and enhance cultural understanding.

Under the Tokugawa clan, Japanese women’s position was declined throughout the Edo era (1603–1868). Almost one century afterwards, a female writer called Ariyoshi Sawako (1931–1984) raised the issue of female position in the Edo era through the novel Hanaoka Seishū no Tsuma (HSNT). "Mama's Scary" ("Mama ga kowai", 1965) by manga artist Umezu Kazuo took a new direction in depicting mother-daughter relationships by giving them a monstrous twist. "Mama's Scary" directly responded to how mother-daughter relationships were portrayed in 1960s shōjo manga, in which they were typically shown to be loving and caring, hence why adding horror elements to such relationship dynamics was considered jarring during the Shōwa era. Therefore, to analyze "Mama's Scary" is to also explore how women and young girls were portrayed in manga by men during the Shōwa era, and to analyze how adding the element of horror either …

This article explores the innovative language strategies employed by Senegalese writer Ken Bugul in her novel Aller et retour to construct a dynamic and interconnected linguistic landscape that challenges fixed language boundaries. Ken Bugul's "langue fabriquée" combines elements of French, Wolof, and English, reflecting a transglocal dimension that embodies the essence of afrophonics—a poetics of resistance that empowers local cultures in a globalized context.
