As an American colony before World War II, the Philippines had close amicable ties with the United States highlighted by promises of independence on July 4th, 1946. The Philippines also maintained a beneficial economic relationship with the States at this time through extensive foreign trade. However, because of the Japanese invasion, the Philippine economy was robbed of this profitable foreign trade and the promise of independence, severely crippling the island nation and her morale. The following paper discusses the role of hanakotoba (the language of flowers) throughout the works of Yoshiya Nobuko, placing a special emphasis on her most unique work “Onibi.” This paper begins with a loose discussion of hanakotoba’s history within Japan, before delving into “Onibi” to highlight how the use of flowers in literature creates various readings of a text, as well as provides deeper insights into the author, the true purpose of a text, and the social and historical context that a text was produced in.

The paper examines the performance and embodiment of spirituality in Japanese Noh Drama during the Muromachi era from 1336 CE to 1573 CE. It also observes the art form from a modern perspective. Specifically, this research examines the classic Noh Drama play Atsumori by Zeami Motokiyo through the phenomenological lens. Phenomenology is a qualitative study that focuses on the perceptions of the human consciousness, and it allows me to examine the impact of subjective experiences on a person’s sense of truth. The concept of trauma is controversial in literature. While one may be able to come up with ways to describe trauma in fiction, representing historical trauma is a hard task for writers. Rising tensions and an increased number of incidents between China and Japan in the current century show that the Nanjing Massacre has had an indisputable effect on modern Sino-Japanese relations politically and socially. Iris Chang’s book of popular history, The Rape of Nanking (1997), both renewed scholarly research and moved the debate into the public eye. This shift in the debate has led to continuing tensions between the two societies even as their governments officially maintain a peaceful relationship. This study examines the concept of coming out as part of queer narrative within Shimanami Tasogare (2015), a manga by Kamatani Yūki. Although coming out has become an important concept within LGBTQ, previous related research tends to see coming out as a one-time achievement. This study analyses the significance of coming out in Shimanami Tasogare by using the queer narrative approach. This study applies Klein et al.’s theory (2015) which argues that coming out is a dynamic and non-linear social process. This paper tells the stories of mixed-race Japanese people. I engage in a re-poetics, positing storytelling as an essential tool into complicating our understandings of race and self. I examine the relationship between language and race, exploring how subjects existing within a space of mixedness navigate identity-formation and racial belonging. Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchant François Caron describes Tokugawa Japan as a rigid political hierarchy controlled by the Shogun, similar to the governments established by absolute monarchs in Europe. Caron understands and insightfully describes Tokugawa society by emphasizing perceived and real similarities between Tokugawa Japan and Early Modern Europe. He struggles to understand religious differences between these societies, but his description of Japanese religious practices still reflects how the Shogunate utilized Buddhism and anti-Christian policies to uphold their rule. Manga is a Japanese form of visual storytelling comparable to comic books and graphic novels that has seen a significant increase in popularity abroad in the twenty-first century. In Japan, manga is published in magazines intended for particular target audiences. The two most prominent of these are shōnen, manga for young men, and seinen, manga for adult men. This paper examines these demographics and explores the growing similarities between these two demographics. This study investigates the comprehension of a Japanese topicalized construction with the structure NP₁ wa (topic) NP₂ da (copula) by native speakers of Japanese. The meaning of this kind of sentence can be extremely ambiguous when NP₁ and NP₂ do not refer to an identical referent. However, it is usually not considered ambiguous when used in a particular context since the context indicates how it is meant to be understood. This chapter introduces the central arguments of Critical Buddhism as a lens by which to view the course of “modern” Buddhism in Japan, particularly as it relates to politics. It traces philosophical and political precedents for Critical Buddhism in the context of Japanese modernity, by focusing on several progressive Buddhist figures movements from mid-Meiji through early Shōwa, including the New Buddhist Fellowship and the Youth League for Revitalizing Buddhism. Taking an arguably minor character from Tezuka Osamu’s oeuvre, Natsume Fusanosuke argues how the Pig Gourd’s cameos even in the artist’s most serious works demonstrate a bifurcated sense of play and high-brow artistry in his manga. Natsume employs an early version of his ‘manga-expression theory’ (manga hyōgen-ron) manga-analysis approach, which he began to develop in this, his first manga-studies monograph and seminal study of the ‘god of manga’ Tezuka Osamu. This study investigates the use of the utterance-final tteyuu [ʔtejɯː], a combination of the quotative particle tte and the verb yuu (‘say’). Although its lexicalized status and utterance-final occurrence are commonly observed, we still know little about its real-time functions. The analysis of 120 examples in varied contexts shows its general usage to clarify something expressed in the prior talk, which is a type of repair practice. More importantly, the analysis reveals how the participants’ understanding of the ongoing speech activity and multimodal cues affect its use and interpretation. The goal of this project was to create a short story in Japanese for the purpose of improving my Japanese writing abilities, especially in areas such as natural character dialog, setting descriptions, pacing and other aspects of creative writing that are usually not covered in language classes. I outlined and drafted the short story first in English to establish a rough framework, then rewrote the story in Japanese with slight variations. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาภาษากะเทย (おネエことば) ที่ปรากฏในสื่อหนังสือการ์ตูนญี่ปุ่นหรือ “มังงะ” และรวบรวมทำเป็นฐานข้อมูล ผู้วิจัยศึกษาภาษากะเทยจากมังงะที่มีตัวละครกะเทยปรากฏและพูดด้วยภาษากะเทยจำนวน 48 ตัวละคร รวมจำนวนประโยคตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 886 ตัวอย่าง มาทำการวิเคราะห์การแสดงอัตลักษณ์โดยวิเคราะห์ใน 4 ประเด็นดังนี้ 1) การใช้สรรพนามของตัวละคร 2) ส่วนลงท้ายประโยค 3) คำไพเราะ (美化語) 4) คำศัพท์ที่แสดงความเป็นภาษากะเทย และเสริมประเด็นการวิเคราะห์อื่นที่ตัวผู้วิจัยสนใจอีก 2 ประเด็นได้แก่ 1) การใช้สัญลักษณ์ เครื่องหมายวรรคตอน และอีโมจิ 2) รูปเขียนฮิรางานะ คาตากานะ และคันจิ นอกจากนี้ก็ยังสอดแทรกการเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างของการแสดงอัตลักษณ์โดยแยกประเภทมังงะตามกลุ่มผู้อ่านของเรื่องผลการวิจัยพบว่า โดยภาพรวมภาษากะเทยในภาษาญี่ปุ่นเป็นภาษาที่ใช้ภาษาผู้หญิงเป็นพื้นฐานแล้วเพิ่มเติมลักษณะพิเศษบางอย่างลงไปทำให้เกิดความแตกต่างจากภาษาผู้หญิงทั่วไป การแสดงอัตลักษณ์มีความโน้มเอียงไปทางภาษาผู้หญิงเป็นส่วนใหญ่ จึงนำเสนอความเป็นผู้หญิงผ่านสรรพนาม ส่วนลงท้ายประโยค คำไพเราะ คำศัพท์ การใช้สัญลักษณ์ เครื่องหมายวรรคตอนและอีโมจิ อย่างไรก็ตามก็มีการแฝงความแข็งกร้าวโน้มเอียงไปทางผู้ชายในรูปแบบภาษาเหล่านี้ด้วย ทั้งนี้ ในกรณีรูปเขียนค้นพบว่ามีความโน้มเอียงไปทางผู้ชายผ่านการใช้คาตากานะและคันจิ ทำให้ภาษากะเทยมีลักษณะการแสดงอัตลักษณ์ที่อยู่กึ่งกลางระหว่างสองเพศ สำหรับการศึกษาความแตกต่างแยกตามกลุ่มผู้อ่านของเรื่องพบว่าภาษากะเทยในมังงะเด็กผู้ชายและมังงะเด็กผู้หญิงไม่ค่อยมีความแตกต่างกัน ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงการแสดงอัตลักษณ์ของภาษากะเทยที่มีแบบแผนที่ชัดเจน ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามเพศของผู้อ่าน

Since the Edo period, geisha have existed as living embodiments of the Japanese arts and aesthetic culture. The true world of the geisha is little known or understood, especially in the west, and misconceptions continue to be perpetuated through popular media. The primary representation of geisha often focuses on their role in relation to male patrons, rather than on artistic accomplishments and cultural value as individuals. This research analyzes the evolution of aesthetics, as being central to expressions of Japanese artistic practices that contributed to the role of the geisha within historical social spaces.
