Digital Sustainability And Its Implications For Finance And Climate Change, Gerard GEORGE, Simon J.D. SCHILLEBEECKX 2021 Singapore Management University

Digital Sustainability And Its Implications For Finance And Climate Change, Gerard George, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As the pandemic forced the entire world to a virtual standstill, nature revived a little. The US emitted 10.3% less CO2 in 2020 than in 2019 and other regions similarly experienced emission declines. Depending on the source, global carbon emissions were down between 4 and 8% in 2020.2 Consumers globally have expressed more concern about sustainability, an observation confirmed by large survey research by Accenture, Kantar, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Ipsos.3 In its latest Emissions Gap Report4 , the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) explicitly connected the pandemic to climate change, nature loss, and pollution. Besides the acceleration of business …

Cohesion, Covid-19 And Contemporary Challenges To Globalization, Andrew DELIOS, Gordon PERCHTHOLD, Alex CAPRI 2021 National University of Singapore

Cohesion, Covid-19 And Contemporary Challenges To Globalization, Andrew Delios, Gordon Perchthold, Alex Capri

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the years preceding the COVID-19 pandemic, the decades-long, pan-continental globalization consensus was being questioned. In our view, the pandemic has accelerated the rate at which the globalization consensus is being defied. To better understand the implications of this defiance, we turn to research on people, organizations and international competition to see whether this defiance weakens the cohesion needed to keep globalization moving apace. People and organizations create cohesive forces that can link and constrain the differences that are encountered when people and organizations move across international borders. Meanwhile, the nature of international competition, particularly as connected to the level …

The Generativity Mindsets Of Chief Executive Officers: A New Perspective On Succession Outcomes, Aparna JOSHI, Donald C. HAMBRICK, Jiyeon KANG 2021 Singapore Management University

The Generativity Mindsets Of Chief Executive Officers: A New Perspective On Succession Outcomes, Aparna Joshi, Donald C. Hambrick, Jiyeon Kang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We apply the psychosocial concept of generativity, or one’s outlook toward the next generation, to the context of chief executive officer (CEO) succession. Integrating prior research on generativity and CEO succession, we identify two key orthogonal dimensions of CEO generativity: (a) the CEO’s degree of commitment to developing the next generation of company leadership and (b) the CEO’s degree of need to control the succession process and outcome. A given CEO’s place on these two dimensions constitutes their overall “generativity mindset,” which we conceptualize as a relatively stable motivational orientation that stems from the CEO’s disposition and accumulated life experiences. …

Knowledge Recombination And Inventor Networks: The Asymmetric Effects Of Embeddedness On Knowledge Reuse And Impact, Simon J.D. SCHILLEBEECKX, Yimin LIN, Gerard GEORGE, Tufool ALNUAIMI 2021 Singapore Management University

Knowledge Recombination And Inventor Networks: The Asymmetric Effects Of Embeddedness On Knowledge Reuse And Impact, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Yimin Lin, Gerard George, Tufool Alnuaimi

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Inventors are triply embedded. They are embedded in a network of knowledge components that they can reuse in future inventions. They are embedded in an inventor network, where internal embeddedness (the strength of relationships between focal inventors and their colleagues upon whose knowledge the team builds) and network centrality influence access to information. Finally, they are embedded in the firm, with its specific routines that favor external or internal knowledge search, what we call search orientation. Using a sample of 39,785 semiconductor patents, we study the pattern of knowledge reuse, or the recombination of technologically similar components, on invention impact. …

Impact Assessment And Measurement With Sustainable Development Goals, Hao LIANG, David FERNANDEZ, Mikkel LARSEN 2021 Singapore Management University

Impact Assessment And Measurement With Sustainable Development Goals, Hao Liang, David Fernandez, Mikkel Larsen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

With the rapid growth of sustainable and responsible investment and widespread adoption of the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting and integration by organizations, how to assess and measure ESG impact has become a critical issue. Although the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a useful framework for investors and organizations globally to align their standards, the SDGs are vague on how to implement them at an organizational or activity level. Current practice relies heavily on third-party ESG rating providers, whose scores mostly apply to public equities only. They also suffer from biases, inconsistencies, and a lack of sufficient disclosure. …

Tips For Sme Transformation Amid Covid-19 Pandemic, Siow-heng ONG 2021 Singapore Management University

Tips For Sme Transformation Amid Covid-19 Pandemic, Siow-Heng Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The author shared that following the economic downturn in 2020, revival in 2021 can only be very gradual. SMEs in different sectors of the economy face different challenges and have different options for response. Overall, SMEs are hopeful rather than confident. SMEs are generally hoping to manage cash flow and stretch their current funds for immediate business sustainability. Inevitably, their focus is on meeting critical business needs. Turnover and profits are not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels so any increase in hiring or other planning for the future will be slight. He suggested that for pragmatic managers of SMEs …

Marriage Of Unequals? Investment Quality Heterogeneity, Market Heat, And The Formation Of Status-Asymmetric Ties In The Venture Capital Industry, Pavel I. ZHELYAZKOV, Adam TATARYNOWICZ 2021 Singapore Management University

Marriage Of Unequals? Investment Quality Heterogeneity, Market Heat, And The Formation Of Status-Asymmetric Ties In The Venture Capital Industry, Pavel I. Zhelyazkov, Adam Tatarynowicz

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study, we investigate the emergence of status-asymmetric ties among venture capital firms. In particular, we highlight the venture's performance trajectory as a powerful antecedent of upward-status asymmetries (in which a lower-status actor brings a higher-status alter into a venture) as well as downward-status asymmetries (in which a higher-status actor brings in a lower-status alter). We hypothesize that lower-status firms tend to bring higher-status alters into ventures on a better performance trajectory, whereas higher-status firms tend to bring lower-status alters into poorly performing ventures. Furthermore, we argue that these effects will be moderated by market heat, which affects whether …

Are Native Plants Green? Assessing Environmental Performances Of Locally-Owned Facilities, Narae LEE, Jiao LUO 2021 Singapore Management University

Are Native Plants Green? Assessing Environmental Performances Of Locally-Owned Facilities, Narae Lee, Jiao Luo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study the impact of corporate ownership and community conditions on firm environmental pollution. While the existing literature often thinks of environmental pollution as a unitary construct, we emphasize the distinction between toxic emissions, which have immediate but locally bounded impact, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which have gradual but global impact, producing climate change. Using a facility-level panel of all manufacturing facilities in the US from 2010-2018, and leveraging within-facility changes in ownership status, we show that locally owned firms have lower levels of toxic emissions, but they are also less likely to report GHG emissions, and have higher …

Thinking On Development Of Emerging Industries Of Strategic Importance In New Stage, Dawei Song

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the development of the emerging industries of strategic importance enters into a new stage and starts a journey from a brand new starting point. The development of the emerging industries should fully utilize their supporting and protecting roles to the transformation of an economic society, their pioneering and leading functions to innovationdriven development, and their positive impact on expanding employment and encouraging entrepreneurship. Hence, it helps China to elevate overall industry competitiveness, comprehensive economic power, and international division of work. This study conducts profound analysis on the rule of development, as well as the …

Value Creation By Private Equity Firms: A Resource-Based View, Kei Pang 2021 University of Missouri-St. Louis

Value Creation By Private Equity Firms: A Resource-Based View, Kei Pang

Dissertations

Despite the growing importance of the private equity (PE) industry in the United States, it is unclear how PE firms create value. This study contributes to the PE literature and strategic management research by examining PE firm resources and competencies that drive the success of equity-backed management buyout deals. Specifically, my work proposes a framework to describe the key value creation drivers and sub-drivers that position PE firms for success in all four stages of the PE value chain: Fund Raising, Deal Sourcing, Governing/Managing, and Exiting. I utilize Porter’s (1985) value chain analysis (VCA) and the resource-based view (RBV) to …

When The Weak Are Mighty: A Two‐Sided Matching Approach To Alliance Performance, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Florence Honoré, Cristina Nistor 2021 California State University, Sacramento

When The Weak Are Mighty: A Two‐Sided Matching Approach To Alliance Performance, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Florence Honoré, Cristina Nistor

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Research Summary

Network centrality is an important determinant of alliance performance. However, estimating how each alliance member's centrality affects alliance performance is challenging because the end market might value each partner's contribution differently. We solve this empirical question with a two‐sided matching model that accounts for the partners' endogenous selection and estimates the effect of each side's centrality and input quality on performance. We implement the method in the novel context of the Thoroughbred horse industry, in foal‐sharing alliances between buyers and suppliers. We find that buyer centrality has a larger marginal effect on the alliance performance than the supplier …

The paper provided a review of the state of the field of grassroots and inclusive innovations, suggested and proposed ways forward for research. It also provided a summary of the articles in the special issue and discussed their contributions. With the extant literature, and the modest contribution of the special issue, the paper postulates that grassroots innovation and inclusive innovation activities are complementary. One the one hand, the inclusive innovations actors and processes facilitate and accelerate grassroots innovation. On the other hand, the knowledge of local context and culture enables effective diffusion of external ideas. The paper also highlights the …

Who Are The Most Inclined To Learn? Evidence From Chinese Multinationals' Internationalization In The European Union, Liang CHEN, Yi LI, Di FAN 2021 Singapore Management University

Who Are The Most Inclined To Learn? Evidence From Chinese Multinationals' Internationalization In The European Union, Liang Chen, Yi Li, Di Fan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

While it is widely recognised that an asset-augmenting rather than asset-exploiting strategy drives emerging multinationals' (EMNEs) internationalization, current research focuses on the motivations behind knowledge seeking FDI. What remains less clear is why latecomer firms can engage in learning in advanced countries. Conjoining the "Linkage-Leverage-Learning (LLL)" framework and knowledge seeking literature, this study shows how Chinese investment in the European Union reveals the preconditions for foreign knowledge sourcing. We follow a set-theoretic approach, utilizing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), to identify equifinal configurations of linkage and leverage conditions leading to high learning propensity of EMNEs. Our analysis extends the LLL …

Global Shift Towards Stakeholder-Oriented Corporate Governance? Evidence From The Scholarly Literature And Future Research Opportunities, Toru Yoshikawa, Michael Nippa, Gavin Chua

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: By reviewing prior scholarly corporate governance (CG) literature and a review of more recent stakeholder studies, this paper aims to examine the extent to which stakeholders and their interests have gained in importance in recent years compared to the shareholder approach, which is dominant in many national economies and suggest future research opportunities. Design/methodology/approach: This study conducts a literature review to examine major findings in prior studies. Findings: The reviews and analyses provide support for a formal and informal convergence of CG systems towards more stakeholder-oriented elements globally. In general, at the institutional and firm levels, there are remarkable …
