Diversification as a strategic objective has become increasingly pursued by many enterprises. However, whether diversification truly brings robust business operations and risk dispersion effects remains a focal point of attention in both academic and practical realms. This study, grounded in Chinese practice, empirically examines the relationship between corporate diversification and financial distress and further discusses the interactive impact of monetary policy tightening and diversification on corporate financial distress.

As the cornerstone of traditional Chinese culture, Confucianism profoundly influences Chinese enterprises' behaviour. This study empirically examines the impact of Confucianism and corporate governance mechanisms on companies' financial and social performance, yielding the following principal conclusions utilizing data from Chinese-listed companies:

Firstly, Confucianism significantly and positively influences corporate performance. Enterprises deeply rooted in Confucian culture often exhibit superior financial and social performance. This finding indicates the positive role of Confucianism in promoting responsible corporate behaviours and enhancing performance.

This dissertation investigates the impact of acquisition activities on the current partners of the involved firms and the restructuring of their alliance portfolios. The first essay examines how acquisitions by a firm’s current alliance partners influence this firm’s subsequent alliance formation. The literature suggests that if a focal firm’s current alliance partners acquire targets that are in the same industry as the focal firm, the focal firm would be concerned about these alliance partners’ commitment, their increased bargaining power, and opportunistic behaviors. This paper explores the phenomenon of 'big company disease' commonly experienced by large companies as they expand. In Western markets, companies are more inclined to respond to the financial market by undergoing divestitures to address this issue. Divestitures simplify the company's structure, making it easier for investors to understand its value. Consequently, this facilitates companies in acquiring more capital resources and provides strong incentives for management. However, in emerging markets, divestitures are less likely due to a less developed financial market and the advantages associated with maintaining a large size and control.

Initiatives leading the implementation of traceability technologies must choose the least-costly set of firms—or seed set—to target for early adoption. In recent years, the world has witnessed a backlash against globalization and a rise in populist and nationalist movements around the world. However, there appears to be little empirical research concerning how these movements, and especially nationalist sentiment, actually influence trade. Therefore, we explore how and when nationalist sentiment within a country influences trade. Our results indicate that the effect of nationalist sentiment on imports is mediated by lower participation in free trade agreements (FTAs) but not via tariffs. We compare the efficacy of two broad approaches to entrepreneurship training: a training prioritizing demand-side activities versus a training prioritizing resource-side activities. We do so by running a field experiment inside a 6-month entrepreneurship program involving 236 early-stage entrepreneurs. Inspired by our training, the first group invested more time interacting with potential customers and developing a deep understanding of customer needs and problems. The other group, in contrast, spent more time identifying and exploiting their core resources such as their network. Prior studies on learning from failure primarily focus on how individuals learn from failure feedback given by other individuals. It is unclear whether and how the advent of machine feedback may influence individuals’ learning from failures. We suggest that failure feedback provided by machines facilitates learning in two ways. First, it focuses individuals’ attention on their failures, leading them to learn from these failures. While prior research has established a link between the attention an organization allocates to the external environment and its adaptations to environmental change, the nature of the cognitive processes that underlie this link remains underexamined.
