Purpose – To investigate the relationship between unions, employee relations and the adoption of High Performance Work Practices (HPWP). Design/methodology/approach – This study uses survey data collected from the senior members of the HRM function in 1789 large Australian organisations. Findings – We found that unions, when coupled with good employee relations, facilitate the adoption of HPWP and consequently have a positive impact on organisational competitiveness, contradicting the simplistic notion that unions are ‘bad for business’ Research limitations/implications – This study used cross sectional survey data from HRM managers, who whilst being the best single source of information, may have …

Platform-Driven Business Model Innovation, Tim Coltman, Magno Queiroz, Peter Reynolds, Paul Tallon

Companies are increasingly looking to new business models based on digital platforms to create an interoperable environment or ecosystem for their customers. However, little has been written about the development and evolution of the complementary digital platform capabilities required to weave processes and data together so that they can inter-operate. A critical requirement for management is to define the level of standardization and integration of processes and data across the ecosystem to deliver a stable digitized platform. Business models can then seek to create customer value by bundling co-specialized assets to generate complementarities. These principles apply to digital companies born …
A Social-Creative-Cognitive (Scc) Model For Requirements Engineering, 2012 University of Wollongong
A Social-Creative-Cognitive (Scc) Model For Requirements Engineering, Linda Dawson
Associate Professor Linda Dawson
This paper describes a research project and the findings from a set of six cases which examine professional requirements engineering (RE) practice from the perspective of how analysts reach agreement on system requirements for Information Systems Development (ISD). In these studies, it was found that the analysts reached agreement on requirements with clients through communication and negotiation based on both analysts’ cognitive skills in problem-solving and creative skills in developing informal models that could be used in the negotiation of agreement and sign-off on requirements specifications. A theoretical model of Social-Creative-Cognitive (SCC) aspects of Requirements Engineering is proposed encompassing the …

During the past 10 years AMLE has made significant progress toward fulfilling its central mission of stimulating discourse within the field of management learning and education. Indeed, AMLE has become a reliable source of insightful scholarship regarding management education in general. The journal has also become an important platform for more specific scholarship directed toward the masters in business administration (MBA) degree and degree programs. Given the centrality of MBA programs in business schools and the substantial literature that has emerged on the topic within AMLE, we review this body of work to identify the broad topics and problems that …

Key Interactions For Online Programs Between Faculty, Students, Technologies, And Institutions: A Holistic Framework, 2012 Kennesaw State University
Key Interactions For Online Programs Between Faculty, Students, Technologies, And Institutions: A Holistic Framework, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Justin Cochran
Jomon Aliyas Paul
Online education is becoming increasingly popular among both traditional and nontraditional students. Students gravitate to the flexibility of online courses, which allows them to work around jobs, family, and other responsibilities. While online program growth continues, these programs present several new challenges to educational institutions and their successful implementation requires a clear understanding of several factors that are at the root of these challenges. We propose 2 intuitive relational diagrams featuring roles and interaction among faculty, student, technology, and institution that could serve as a conceptual framework for developing successful online education programs.

A Process Flow Based Framework For Nurse Demand Estimation To Address Nurse Shortage., 2012 Kennesaw State University
A Process Flow Based Framework For Nurse Demand Estimation To Address Nurse Shortage., Jomon Paul, Leo Macdonald

The nursing shortage in the United States poses a serious problem to hospitals, given that nurses provide an indispensable service within the healthcare system. This issue is expected to worsen, especially given the aging population of baby-boomers, which includes those that are part of the nurse workforce. This has resulted in a wide variety of problems, including patient safety issues, inability to detect complications, and potential patient mortality rate increases. Nurse shortage implications go beyond healthcare quality, extending to health economics as well. Inaccurate estimates of the nursing resources required to satisfy patient demand in a hospital environment could make …

On The Conceptualization Of Strategic Information Technology Alignment: Development And Validation Of A Multidimensional Construct, 2012 University of Wollongong
On The Conceptualization Of Strategic Information Technology Alignment: Development And Validation Of A Multidimensional Construct, Magno Queiroz, Tim Coltman
Magno Queiroz
In this study we conceptualize strategic information technology (IT) alignment as a two-way relationship where business strategy influences IT, and IT influences business strategy. This implies that a multidimensional rather than the traditional unidimensional conceptualization of strategic IT alignment is appropriate. To validate this approach we develop and test a new multidimensional measure that captures the first-order effects of IT alignment at the process-level, where they are expected to be realized. We test the model using survey data from 94 companies that span three countries ─ US, Australia and Germany. Results reveal that the multidimensional measure of strategic IT alignment …
Slow Steaming Impacts On Ocean Carriers And Shippers, 2012 Kennesaw State University
Slow Steaming Impacts On Ocean Carriers And Shippers, Michael Maloni, Jomon Paul, David Gligor
Jomon Aliyas Paul
Ocean container carriers have implemented slow steaming (reduced vessel speeds) in recent years to improve fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions. However, many shippers oppose the practice due to increased pipeline inventory associated with longer transit times. Given this conflict, this article seeks to quantify the costs and benefits of slow steaming relative to carriers and shippers. We simulate a high volume Asia-North America container trade lane to estimate slow steaming impacts under different vessel speeds, volumes and fuel prices. Under current conditions, the results justify slow steaming practices, revealing extra slow steaming as the most beneficial vessel speed …

Third-party quality assurance seals have emerged as a prominent mechanism to reduce uncertainty and increase purchase conversion in online markets. However, systematic studies of the effectiveness of these seals are scarce. In this study, we exploit a unique data set of 9,098 shopping sessions at an online retailer's website to empirically measure the value and effectiveness of assurance seals on the likelihood of purchase by shoppers. The data set is collected from a randomized field experiment conducted by a large seal provider, which enables us to infer the causal impacts of the presence of an assurance seal. We find strong …
