Frame-Of-Reference Training Effectiveness: Effects Of Goal Orientation And Self-Efficacy On Affective, Cognitive, Skill-Based, And Transfer Outcomes., Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface, Kenneth Brown

Empirical evidence supporting frame-of-reference (FOR) training as an effective intervention for calibrating raters is convincing. Yet very little is known about who does better or worse in FOR training. We conducted a field study of how motivational factors influence affective, cognitive, and behavioral learning outcomes, as well as near transfer indexed by achieving professional certification. Relying on goal orientation theory, we hypothesized effects for 3 goal orientations: learning, prove performance, and avoid performance. Results were generally supportive across learning outcomes and transfer. Advances in cancer treatments and the increasing availability of information are changing the information behaviors of cancer patients. Many American adults search for health-related information on the Internet and have made decisions based on results from general search engines. Information and health professionals are concerned about the reliability, validity and volume of health information available. Patient usage and preferences are discussed. This article reviews recent literature and research surrounding the information seeking behaviors of cancer patients and provides ideas for future research.

We examine whether disclosure quality affects the link between a firm’s cash flow or asset values and its capital investment. We use a unique setting to examine this issue: a sudden 50% decrease in oil prices in 1986. This setting allows us to examine the effect of disclosure quality immediately prior to an unexpected, exogenous increase in a firm’s capital constraint on the firm’s capital investment immediately following the shock. After attempting a couple different business ideas while at DePaul, Reid discovered a business opportunity with VOKAL, which builds custom mobile applications for businesses. One year after graduating, he employs 10 full-time people and will break $1 million in revenue. Reid made several important connections at Coleman Center networking events, and in early 2010 was featured in a CNBC documentary about the dramatic growth of the mobile application industry. Reid is a member of the eMerge Alumni Council.

Immigrant Business Enterprises: A Classification Framework Conceptualization And Test, Roberto Curci, Robert Mackoy

This article proposes the Immigrant Business Enterprises Classification Framework to organize immigrant-owned businesses into categories associated with different levels of business integration into a host country's mainstream business community. The article applies the framework and reports the findings of structured face-to-face interviews with 199 Hispanic business enterprises (HBEs) in Indianapolis. The authors find Hispanic-owned businesses hold different characteristics depending upon the integration category in which they are classified; the findings suggest that to support immigrant entrepreneurship, governments, business development organizations, and researchers should address category-specific challenges, opportunities, and needs.

Most organizations use a merit pay or pay-for-performance system (PFP) to improve employee performance. Despite its popularity, a PFP system can be difficult to implement. Success depends on several issues. These include adequate funding, suitable job characteristics, and appropriate performance feedback. Moreover, even under the best circumstances, PFP systems may cause unintended consequences such as dysfunctional behavior, unethical conduct and even employment discrimination. Still, when the critical issues for proper implementation are appropriately addressed, a PFP system is and should continue to be a successful management tool to enhance employee performance in the workplace.
