The traditional relationship – that Aboriginal peoples in Canada have had with their land and its resources – has changed significantly since the arrival of Europeans. During the 17th and 18th centuries, trade relations with the newcomers introduced to Aboriginal peoples: 1) capitalism; 2) the capitalist view toward land; 3) the exploitation of resources. The newly formed Canadian government in the late 19th century with its Indian policy expedited the shift to a capitalist economy with the creation of Indian reserves. During the mid-20th century First Nations began to view economic interests as a part of their own development agenda. …

When Should Bankruptcy Be An Option (For People, Places Or Things)?, David A. Skeel Jr. 2014 University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School

When Should Bankruptcy Be An Option (For People, Places Or Things)?, David A. Skeel Jr.

All Faculty Scholarship

When many people think about bankruptcy, they have a simple left-to-right spectrum of possibilities in mind. The spectrum starts with personal bankruptcy, moves next to corporations and other businesses, and then to municipalities, states, and finally countries. We assume that bankruptcy makes the most sense for individuals; that it makes a great deal of sense for corporations; that it is plausible but a little more suspect for cities; that it would be quite odd for states; and that bankruptcy is unimaginable for a country.

In this Article, I argue that the left-to-right spectrum is sensible but mistaken. After defining “bankruptcy,” …

Using Inoculation Messages To Protect “Stay In The Market” Beliefs During Financial Crises, Lindsay Lyles Dillingham 2014 University of Kentucky

Using Inoculation Messages To Protect “Stay In The Market” Beliefs During Financial Crises, Lindsay Lyles Dillingham

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

This paper focuses on the problem of collapsed “stay in the market” (SIM) beliefs during financial crises. The primary purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether or not inoculation messages represent a viable communication strategy to preemptively protect SIM beliefs during forthcoming financial crises. Ancillary purposes of this study were to further investigate the role of print and video crises, explicit instructions regarding post-inoculation talk (PIT), and gain and loss frame inoculation messages on the inoculation process. This study used a between subjects factorial design (3 x 2 plus four additional conditions) to explore ten hypotheses. Data collected from …

Retailing has grown and continues to contribute significantly to the economy of the Unit-ed States, as well as to most other economies around the world. The study of retailing, as an academic field, continues to grow and evolve. The study of retail history and of its contributors provides beneficial insight. Retail commerce began to flourish in the United States well over a century ago. This study attempts to provide insight into the absence of an original and significant contributor to the field of retailing and marketing, John Wanamaker. In fact, John Wanamaker has been referred to as the “Father of …

Self-Regulated Learning And The Role Of Eportfolios In Business Studies, Amparo Soler-Dominguez, Lucia Morales, Valentina Tarkovska 2014 Finance and Accounting Department, Universitat Jaume I, Castello de la Plana, Spain

Self-Regulated Learning And The Role Of Eportfolios In Business Studies, Amparo Soler-Dominguez, Lucia Morales, Valentina Tarkovska

Articles

Through a case study supported by observation techniques, and questionnaires to gather data, we explored the use of ePortfolios as an efficient assessment tool to assist business degree students. Our main focus was a postgraduate course in which finance modules were a major component. We analysed the role of ePortfolios in Higher Education Institutions over a period of four academic years. Our findings suggest that ePortfolios could be used to facilitate and enhance students’ selfregulated learning. The role of the instructor was found to be fundamental in the early stages of the learning process. This role diminished as students became …

Multi-Criteria Decision Making Based On Dsmt-Ahp, Jean Dezert, Jean Marc Tacnet, Mireille Batton-Hubert, Florentin Smarandache 2014 University of New Mexico

Multi-Criteria Decision Making Based On Dsmt-Ahp, Jean Dezert, Jean Marc Tacnet, Mireille Batton-Hubert, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we present an extension of the multicriteria decision making based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) which incorporates uncertain knowledge matrices for generating basic belief assignments (bba’s). The combination of priority vectors corresponding to bba’s related to each (sub)- criterion is performed using the Proportional Conflict Redistribution rule no. 5 proposed in Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) of plausible and paradoxical reasoning. The method presented here, called DSmT-AHP, is illustrated on very simple examples.

A Dynamic Model Of Competitive Entry Response, Matthew Selove 2013 Chapman University

A Dynamic Model Of Competitive Entry Response, Matthew Selove

Business Faculty Articles and Research

I develop a dynamic investment game with a “memoryless” research and development process in which an incumbent and an entrant can invest in a new technology, and the entrant can also invest in the old technology. I show that an increase in the probability of successfully implementing a technology can cause the incumbent to reduce its investment. Under certain conditions, if the success probability is high, the incumbent allows the entrant to win the new technology so that firms reach an equilibrium in which they use different technologies, and threats of retaliation prevent attacks; but if the success probability is …

Impact Of Oil Prices Fluctuations On Economies In The Age Of Globalization, Ancel Raynaud Soh feussi 2013 Buffalo state College

Impact Of Oil Prices Fluctuations On Economies In The Age Of Globalization, Ancel Raynaud Soh Feussi

Applied Economics Theses

Early in the past century, oil has powered economic growth in industrialized economies. Towards the end of the 20th century, as emerging and underdeveloped economies relied more on oil powered means for their everyday need, their appetite for oil has considerably increased and this put an upward pressure on the global oil demand. As supply now struggles to match demand, oil prices are more and more driven by macroeconomics fundamentals. The disparity between supply and demand has had different effects on economies depending, if it is a net oil-exporting or net oil-importing one. This paper will attempt to quantify …

Titanic: Consuming The Myths And Meanings Of An Ambiguous Brand, Stephen Brown, Pierre McDonagh, Clifford J. Shultz 2013 Loyola University Chicago

Titanic: Consuming The Myths And Meanings Of An Ambiguous Brand, Stephen Brown, Pierre Mcdonagh, Clifford J. Shultz

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Myths have come of age in consumer research. In the 22 years since Levy’s inaugural article, the literature has grown at an impressive rate. Yet important questions remain unanswered: What makes some myths especially meaningful to consumers? Why are certain consumer myths more prevalent and less perishable than others? This article argues that ambiguity is an influential factor. Using the RMS Titanic as an empirical exemplar, it unpacks the principal forms of myth-informed ambiguity surrounding “the unsinkable brand.” Predicated on William Empson’s hitherto unsung principles of literary criticism, the article posits that ambiguity in its multifaceted forms is integral to …

Developing An Is Quality Culture With Iso 9001: Hopefully, A Never Ending Story, João Barata, Paulo Rupino da Cunha, Cristina Chuva Costa 2013 University of Coimbra

Developing An Is Quality Culture With Iso 9001: Hopefully, A Never Ending Story, João Barata, Paulo Rupino Da Cunha, Cristina Chuva Costa

João Barata

We present an approach to develop IS Quality Culture, in the context of ISO 9001. The research design begins with semi-structured interviews with eight auditors, followed by action research. We confirmed that auditors recognize the importance of five distinct IS Quality dimensions: information/data, software, administrative, service, and infrastructure. However, the audit practice reveals the risk of considering IS as mere support, disregarding the cultural aspects of IS Quality. Our contribution addresses this gap by providing an audit checklist and an approach accessible to IS non-experts. An IS Quality Culture is vital in regulatory environments, and may raise the audit effectiveness …

An Analysis Of The Use Of Dogs In Predicting Human Toxicology And Drug Safety, Jarrod Bailey, Michelle Thew, Michael Balls 2013 British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection

An Analysis Of The Use Of Dogs In Predicting Human Toxicology And Drug Safety, Jarrod Bailey, Michelle Thew, Michael Balls

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Dogs remain the main non-rodent species in preclinical drug development. Despite the current dearth of new drug approvals and meagre pipelines, this continues, with little supportive evidence of its value or necessity. To estimate the evidential weight provided by canine data to the probability that a new drug may be toxic to humans, we have calculated Likelihood Ratios (LRs) for an extensive dataset of 2,366 drugs with both animal and human data, including tissue-level effects and Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) Level 1–4 biomedical observations. The resulting LRs show that the absence of toxicity in dogs provides virtually no …

How Do Firms Become Different? A Dynamic Model, Matthew Selove 2013 Chapman University

How Do Firms Become Different? A Dynamic Model, Matthew Selove

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper presents a dynamic investment game in which firms that are initially identical develop assets that are specialized to different market segments. The model assumes that there are increasing returns to investment in a segment, for example, as a result of word-of-mouth or learning curve effects. I derive three key results: (1) Under certain conditions there is a unique equilibrium in which firms that are only slightly different focus all of their investment in different segments, causing small random differences to expand into large permanent differences. (2) If, on the other hand, sufficiently large random shocks are possible, firms …
