Capacity-Driven Pricing Mechanism In Special Service Industries, Lijian Chen, Suraj M. Alexander 2015 University of Dayton

Capacity-Driven Pricing Mechanism In Special Service Industries, Lijian Chen, Suraj M. Alexander

Lance (Lijian) Chen

We propose a capacity driven pricing mechanism for several service industries in which the customer behavior, the price demand relationship, and the competition are significantly distinct from other industries. According our observation, we found that the price demand relationship in these industries cannot be modeled by fitted curves; the customers would neither plan in advance nor purchase the service strategically; and the competition would be largely local. We analyze both risk neutral and risk aversion pricing models and conclude the proposed capacity driven model would be the optimal solution under mild assumptions. The resulting pricing mechanism has been implemented at …

Change initiatives is a popular approach to eliminate waste and increase profits with a more efficient approach to productivity. Developed by Motorola it now has spread world wide with the more popular Toyota Production System (TPS) to Trumpf with its Synchro Production System, Healthcare, and Small Business Enterprises (SME’s). Many companies have claimed benefits from change initiative implementation with some failures. This paper reviews the critical success factors and change projects and what the companies did to be successful..

Green Supply Chain Management In Chinese Electronic Manufacturing Organisations; An Analysis Of Senior Managements’ Perceptions., Eoin Plant, Yusen Xu, Gareth R.T. White 2015 Technological University Dublin

Green Supply Chain Management In Chinese Electronic Manufacturing Organisations; An Analysis Of Senior Managements’ Perceptions., Eoin Plant, Yusen Xu, Gareth R.T. White

Articles

Green supply chain management and reverse logistics has emerged as a key area of research interest. Recent environmental regulations have also stimulated interest in this field. However, information sharing is a pre- requisite to efficient and effective logistics utilisation. Manufacturing organisations in China were argued to be 10-20 years behind their Western counterparts in relation to information sharing in their supply chains (Li and Yuan, 2009). This barrier needs to be addressed if China is going to maintain and grow its manufacturing position in the world, attempt to address green supply chain issues and their negative externalities. A systematic literature …

A Rolling Horizon Auction Mechanism And Virtual Pricing Of Shipping Capacity For Urban Consolidation Centers, Chen WANG, Hoong Chuin LAU, Yun Fong LIM 2015 SAP Innovation Centre, Singapore

A Rolling Horizon Auction Mechanism And Virtual Pricing Of Shipping Capacity For Urban Consolidation Centers, Chen Wang, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yun Fong Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A number of cities around the world have adopted urban consolidation centers (UCCs) to address challenges of last-mile deliveries. At the UCC, goods are consolidated based on their destinations prior to their deliveries into city centers. Typically, a UCC owns a fleet of ecofriendly vehicles to carry out such deliveries. Shippers/carriers that make use of the UCC’s service hence no longer need to be restricted by timewindow and vehicle-type regulations. As a result, they retain the ability to deploy large trucks for the economies of scale from the source to the UCC which is located outside the city center. Furthermore, …

The insurance industry spends millions of dollars each year in efforts to repeal insurance laws that they feel are not favorable to them. Anything that goes against changing current policies and giving consumer more protection and value they want no part of. Instead of finding ways to change their strategies and make a profit they look for reasons not too.

A Contingent Systems View Of Urban Logistics, William John Rose 2015 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

A Contingent Systems View Of Urban Logistics, William John Rose

Doctoral Dissertations

As urban areas around the world continue to grow, many companies have set their sights on entering these increasingly important markets with dense and diverse customer populations. Unfortunately, the urban environment presents many unique challenges not encountered in traditional city-to-city logistics. As firms adapt to these unique challenges, differences between cities add further complexity. Applying the systems contingency theory perspective (Venkatraman, 1989), this research examines the differences between U.S. urban areas and the logistics strategies that best fit specific combinations of urban environmental characteristics. Following a multi-disciplinary literature review, case studies conducted in eight U.S. cities confirmed certain environmental characteristics …

An Empirical Assessment Of Patient Healthcare Quality: A Lean Hospital Supply Chain Perspective, Subhajit Chakraborty 2015 University of Texas-Pan American

An Empirical Assessment Of Patient Healthcare Quality: A Lean Hospital Supply Chain Perspective, Subhajit Chakraborty

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Improving the quality of healthcare services available to patients and increasing the efficiency of treatment processes are two pressing needs of the U.S. healthcare system. Aside from extensive research on medicine and disease-specific cures, extant literature does not offer a comprehensive framework that considers all determinants of patient care quality. The objective of this research is to offer an empirically tested framework that may be used by full-service U.S. hospitals to improve the quality of care available to their admitted patients. This framework draws in variables from both external as well as internal hospital supply chains, as recommended by many …

Dynamic Pricing For Hotel Rooms When Customers Request Multiple-Day Stays, Selvaprabu NADARAJAH, Yun Fong LIM, Qing DING 2015 Singapore Management University

Dynamic Pricing For Hotel Rooms When Customers Request Multiple-Day Stays, Selvaprabu Nadarajah, Yun Fong Lim, Qing Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Prominent hotel chains quote a booking price for a particular type of rooms on each day and dynamically update these prices over time. We present a novel Markov decision process (MDP) formulation that determines the optimal booking price for a single type of rooms under this strategy, while considering the availability of rooms throughout the multiple-day stays requested by customers. We analyze special cases of our MDP to highlight the importance of modeling multiple-day stays and provide guidelines to potentially simplify the implementation of pricing policies around peak-demand events such as public holidays and conferences. Since computing an optimal policy …

Bio-Fuel Alternatives In South African Airways (Saa) Operations - Is It An Effective Response To Vulnerability Over Carbon Taxes And Penalty?, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum 2015 University of North Dakota

Bio-Fuel Alternatives In South African Airways (Saa) Operations - Is It An Effective Response To Vulnerability Over Carbon Taxes And Penalty?, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The paper did a comparative analysis of the carbon emission and European Union Emission Trading Surcharges (EU ETS) of South African Airways (SAA) current fleet that used aviation jet A1 fuel and the same fleet if it had used a 25% bio-fuel ‘drop in’ for the European routes within the first quarter of the 2014 flying year (FY 14). Operational data in terms of the flight scheduled, aircraft type, total time enroute, route stage length, passenger estimates were obtained through SAA’s flight operations website. An independent t–test was conducted to compare means of the emissions. The mean carbon dioxide …

Enhancing Competitiveness And Connectivity: The New Us-Mexico Air Services Agreement, Drew M. Stapleton, Vivek Pande

Journal of Transportation Management

Beginning this year, U.S. cargo and passenger airlines will have an opportunity to compete for a bigger share of freight trade and traffic between the U.S. and Mexico. This opportunity will occur as a result of the new Air Services Agreement (ASA) between the U.S. and Mexico that took effect in January, 2016. This ASA further elevates and strengthens the dynamic commercial and economic relationship between the United States and Mexico by facilitating greater trade and tourism. It is a key element of the U.S.-Mexico High Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) that aims to promote competitiveness and connectivity, foster economic growth, …

The purpose of this paper is to review logistics concepts used in macro freight transportation modeling by various planning agencies at the national, state and city level. The chronological development of freight modeling endeavors are studied here and the logistics component incorporated in the modeling is identified. The key modeling tools are identified and analyzed to identify the efficacy of the model, ease of use, and data required to implement the model. The conclusion was that European freight models were more developed than North American freight models. The tools most widely used are the aggregate-disaggregate-aggregate model, input-output model, artificial neural …

Identifying The Dimensions Of Logistics Service Quality In An Online B2c Context, David M. Gligor 2015 The University of Mississippi

Identifying The Dimensions Of Logistics Service Quality In An Online B2c Context, David M. Gligor

Journal of Transportation Management

There is theoretical and practical evidence indicating the existence of significant differences between the needs and wants of firms and end consumers, as well as the existence of significantly different needs between offline and online environments. Therefore, it is not clear how effectively measures of logistics service quality developed in an offline, B2B context can be applied to an online, B2C environment. This manuscript explores the elements of logistics service quality that end consumers value in an online context. The literature on logistics service quality in B2B and the literature on online consumer satisfaction are integrated. This results in the …

Using Visual Data Mining In Highway Traffic Safety Analysis And Decision Making, Yao-Te Tsai, Huw D. Smith, Stephen M. Swartz, Fadel M. Megahed 2015 Auburn University

Using Visual Data Mining In Highway Traffic Safety Analysis And Decision Making, Yao-Te Tsai, Huw D. Smith, Stephen M. Swartz, Fadel M. Megahed

Journal of Transportation Management

An ongoing, two-fold challenge involves extracting useful information from the massive amounts of highway crash data and explaining complicated statistical models to inform the public about highway safety. Highway safety is critical to the trucking industry and highway funding policy. One method to analyze complex data is through the application of visual data mining tools. In this paper, we address the following three questions: a) what existing data visualization tools can assist with highway safety theory development and in policy-making?; b) can visual data mining uncover unknown relationships to inform the development of theory or practice? and c) can a …
