Psychographic Segmentation In A Unique Service Industry: A Typology Based On Consumers’ Levels Of Consumption Of Live And Media-Based Spectator Sports, Tammy Mccullough, Sam Fullerton
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
The purposes of this study were twofold. First a typology for the categorization of consumers of spectator sports based solely upon their levels of consumption as members of both the live and the media-based audiences was developed. The four segments were given names based upon the individuals’ levels of consumption as members of both of the two alternative audiences. Specifically, the resulting segments comprised the sports-immersed fans, venue-based enthusiasts, media-based fans, and sports contrarians. Subjects also responded to a set of 34 sports-oriented psychographic statements which allowed for lifestyle-based profiles to be developed for each of the four designated segments. …

An Empirical Taxonomy Of Tourist Information Search Strategies, Stephen W. Clopton, James E. Stoddard, Mike R. Evans
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
An empirical taxonomy of tourists’ information search strategies is developed based on a survey of a large sample of tourists. The taxonomy reveals five different information search strategies. Each search strategy consists of the combination of individual information sources used by tourists in pre-trip planning. The five information search strategies are related to select tourist demographic characteristics, trip activities, accommodation choices, and general media preferences. The results indicate a multivariate relationship between tourist demographics and information search strategies. Furthermore, information search strategies are related to tourists’ preferred trip activities and choice of accommodations. Implications of the taxonomy for tourism marketing …

Personal Identity And Nostalgia For The Distant Land Of Past: Legacy Tourism, Nina M. Ray, Gary Mccain
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
"The past is certainly a distant land and getting there is a difficult and imperfect undertaking" (Brown, Hirschman & Maclaran (2006). This paper explores motivations behind how consumers reach that "distant land." Over 1,000 respondents of a variety of ethnic groups show very different stories and diaspora timelines, but personal identity and connection with place are always top ranked motivations for interest in ancestors. How might groups, who may suffer from a lack of identity, fit into these findings when 'personal identity' is the number one reason why consumers engage in genealogy and legacy tourism? Whether a group is well …

Competition And Price Wars In The U.S. Brewing Industry, Jayendra Gokhale, Victor J. Tremblay
Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Information Sciences - Daytona Beach
The behavior of the macro or mass-production segment of the U.S. brewing industry appears to be paradoxical. Since the end of Prohibition in 1934, the number of independent brewer has continuously declined while the major national brewers, such as Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors, have gained market share. In spite of this decline in the number of competitors, profits and market power have remained low in brewing. Iwasaki et al. (2008) explain this result by providing evidence that changes in marketing and production technologies favored larger brewers and forced the industry into a war of attrition, in which only a handful …

Do The Right Thing The Role Of Public Service Advertisements On The Behaviors Of Contemporary College Students, Jessica Jones
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between public service advertising and the likelihood of Generation Y to react in the prescribed manner. Public service advertising can be paid or unpaid but is used to try and influence a particular audience to act in a prescribed manner. This research will be comparing two different types of message styles, argumentative and emotional, and two contemporary prominent issues, organ donation and prescription drug abuse. The two issues are classified as either altruistic, where there is no direct benefit, or self-help, where the results are personal. Four different messages will …

Implementing Changes In Marketing Strategy: The Role Of Perceived Outcome- And Process-Oriented Supervisory Actions, Shikhar Sarin, Goutam Challagalla, Ajay K. Kohli
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study investigates the role of supervisors in implementing changes in marketing strategy. The authors propose that perceptions of outcome-oriented supervisory actions influence salespeople's primary appraisals of a strategic change (i.e., whether the change will affect them) and that perceptions of process-oriented supervisory actions influence salespeople’s secondary appraisals (i.e., whether they can cope with the impact of the change on them). The results from a study of 828 salespeople in 204 branches of a large distributor of industrial goods provide evidence that perceived outcome risk containment and outcome reward emphasis enhance primary appraisals, whereas perceived process risk containment and process …

How Did Nike Get The Swoosh Into Skateboarding? A Study Of Authenticity And Nike Sb, Brandon Gomez
Media Studies - Theses
Skateboarding is widely regarded as a subculture that is highly resistant to any type of integration or co-option from large, mainstream companies. In 2002 Nike entered the skateboarding market with its Nike SB line of shoes, and since 2004 has experienced tremendous success within the skateboarding culture. During its early years Nike experienced a great deal of backlash from the skateboarding community, but has recently gained wider acceptance as a legitimate company within this culture. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific aspects of authenticity Nike was able achieve in order to successfully integrate into skateboarding. In …

The Effects Advertising Plays On College Students' Moral Intentions Beyond Purchase Behavior, William Crockett
HIM 1990-2015
Advertisements affect our daily lives and as technology and the practice of marketing has developed over the course of history, we have become exposed to greater amounts of product and service campaigns. The purpose of advertisements is to educate the consumer with the goal of ultimately selling the product, and many companies and organizations would not be able to survive without the use of advertisements. Ultimately, it is a necessity for a business to prosper in a competitive market, but there are possible side-effects for the consumer that are beyond the intentions to buy. The purpose of this thesis is …

Celebrity influence on consumer behavior at the online macro level is the motivation for this study that addresses the nature of celebrity consumption and how consumers apply that consumption to develop their online self-presentation.
The sample for this study is limited to consumers with active accounts at online social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. Methodology is a three-part design. A multi-factor qualitative exploratory study (n=73) reveals four celebrity-consumer relationships whose proposed measurement scales are tested in a quantitative pilot study (n=85). Finally, a large sample study (n=593) is used to test the measurement model and to test the proposed …
