McKenzie Higsmith, PharmD, from Johnson City, TN, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Dr. Highsmith also holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at James H. Quillen College of Medicine. She maintains a clinical pharmacy practice with the ETSU Family Physicians of Kingsport. She is faculty advisor for the ETSU chapter of the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists and a member of TPA, APhA, ACCP, STFM, Kappa Psi, and Phi Lambda Sigma.

Meet Michele Graybeal, from Kingsport, Tennesssee. Michele has worked in the Office of Student Affairs since 2008. An alumna of ETSU and former pharmacy technician, she spent five years working with student musicians and guest artists at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg before returning home to the Tri-Cities. Her current position as Student Life Coordinator allows her to work with the people she most enjoys: students. Michele looks forward to further developing her administrative knowledge in the areas of student service and advocacy.

Meet Dr. Rick Hess, from Lutz, Florida. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in 1998. He completed his post-graduate residency in community practice specializing in providing diabetes care in community pharmacy. In 2007, Dr. Hess joined ETSU Gatton College of Pharmacy as assistant professor of pharmacy practice. He currently provides diabetes care with State of Franklin Healthcare Associates.

JOHNSON CITY A student in the Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University has been awarded a prestigious summer internship at Johns Hopkins University.

Shannon Parkey, a second-year pharmacy student at ETSU, will spend the summer taking part in the Johns Hopkins Pharmacy Internship Program through which she will work at the Johns Hopkins Weinberg Outpatient Pharmacy in Baltimore.

The pharmacy, located in The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, services approximately 140 acute care beds and two high-volume outpatient oncology infusion centers.

JOHNSON CITY A $40,000 grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents is helping one East Tennessee State University fellow continue his long-standing interest in studying prescription drug abuse.

East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy and Center for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment hosted a roundtable discussion on Tuesday morning for key players in the community, as well as ETSU faculty, on the topic of opioid abuse, prevention and treatment. JOHNSON CITY – The Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University’s Delta Epsilon chapter of the academic honor society Rho Chi recently received a grant to help create a valuable resource for students.

The $500 grant, obtained by assistant professor and the ETSU chapter co-advisor Dr. Cortney Mospan, will allow the college to create an online arena in which fourth-year pharmacy students at ETSU can log in for guidance in finding post-graduation training positions.

Hannah Oakes, Ph.D. student in the laboratory of Dr. Brooks Pond, recently received a prestigious American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. This highly competitive fellowship includes $10,000 per year to be utilized toward research and educational costs. As part of the application process, Hannah submitted a research proposal, as well as a CV, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. The review panel selected recipients based on the novelty, relevance, and feasibility of their proposed research, their academic achievement, their leadership skills and experience, their publication record, and their communication skills.

Meet P4 Payton Tipton, of Jonesborough, TN, who grew up in the Appalachian region and wanted to learn more about the culture as part of her rotation. 

What did you do while on rotation?

PT: For the first part of the rotation, we worked in Rogersville (TN) at a federally qualified health center. We helped out in the pharmacy and counseled patients on their prescriptions. Students Aaron Garst and Tyler Finocchio from East Tennessee University, and Emily Hoeksema and Brandi Sherbert from the Medical University of South Carolina spent four weeks in Aberdeen working alongside RGU students and observing pharmacy professionals in a variety of settings across Scotland.

JOHNSON CITY Dr. Zac Walls arrived at East Tennessee State University in 2011 and has been working ever since to improve drugs used to treat certain cancers.

An assistant professor in the Gatton College of Pharmacy, Walls currently is focusing much of his research on doxorubicin, one of the most successful drugs used in the treatment of ovarian cancer.

This research explores the link between a gravity model and welfare frameworks and then applies the quantitative model system to analyze how trade and welfare is affected by the Minimum Required Performance Limits (MRPL) in the shrimp importing market of European Union.

The quantitative model system consists of two parts: first, this study uses the “phi-ness” gravity model to investigate the trade effects of MRPL on EU shrimp market. The “phi-ness” gravity model partitions the standard variables to avoid biased estimation caused by the correlation between time and country fixed effects and policy variables. JOHNSON CITY Dr. Sarah Melton, a professor in East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, will lead the College of Public Healths Grand Rounds event slated to take place on Friday, Sept. 19, from 12-1 p.m.
