The experiences of African American women managers in predominantly Black work environments and the implication of these experiences on their ability to lead remains unknown. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to gain deeper understanding of the leadership experiences of African American women managers employed in predominantly Black work environments. This study was framed by three key concepts: intersectionality of gender and race, intraracial discrimination, and colorism. From 2006 to 2016, an estimated average of 50% of big data analytics and decision support projects failed to deliver acceptable and actionable outputs to business users. The resulting management inefficiency came with high cost, and wasted investments estimated at $2.7 trillion in 2016 for companies in the United States. Over 70% of information technology (IT) projects in large organizations in the United States run over budget or fail to reach completion primarily due to a lack of effective strategies. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies that IT project managers used to successfully complete IT projects. This study analyzed job satisfaction as it relates to employees within the Department of the Navy in an effort to better understand the role that supervisory leadership plays in improving or degrading employee job satisfaction. Multiple interviews were conducted with current and former employees in order to gainer deeper understanding of the experiences of these employees. The results indicate that styles such as servant leadership and transformational are seen as having a more positive impact on employee job satisfaction than other styles including trait and transaction.
