Following The Crowd: Beginners Investors Guide To The Options Market, Jeremy Dawkins, Alexy Morris, Jacob Gipson, Masoud Valizadeh
SMU Data Science Review
While the options market may be intimidating for a beginner, having the right tools can help improve the outcome of their investments. This project aims to develop a tool that uses time-series analysis and forecasting to model the future demand of S&P 500 and AAPL options contracts. The open interest of these contracts will be analyzed using various models such as AR, ARIMA, Neural Networks, and VAR, along with the put-call ratio. The goal is not to make buy or sell recommendations, but alert the user when money is flowing into a security or index. Of all the models, the …

In this report, Michael Swack, Jolan Rivera, and Sanjeev Sharma discuss the results of the On The Road Lending (OTRL) program evaluation.
OTRL and its sister CDFI, On the Road Sustainability Funds (OTRSF), share a common mission to promote prosperity within America’s working families through transportation and financial innovation. While OTRL and OTRDF measure and report on many environmental, social, and financial outcomes, the most important are economic mobility measures and improvements in quality of life, namely, greater agency, and control of options through more wealth and time (OTRL, 2021).
OTRL clients work with a coach who provides vehicle purchase …

Things To Consider Before Co-Signing A Loan, J. David Aiken
Cornhusker Economics
In the context of family farms, includes some general points to consider before you sign a loan guarantee for a family member who is heavily in debt.
Conclusion: Having to consider whether to co-sign a child's loan is a very difficult situation-no one wants to be part of losing part of the family farm or ranch to loan foreclosure. But if the loan guarantee isn't part of a financial turnaround plan that has at least a fighting chance of success, don't sign the guarantee unless you absolutely don't need the money for your own retirement.

Recidivism Rates In The United States Versus Europe: How And Why Are They Different?, Madalyn Hayden
Honors Theses
Recidivism rates in the United States (70%) are almost triple that of most European countries (20% in Norway). The question that this project aims to answer is “How and Why are Recidivism Rates in the United States and Europe Different?”. High recidivism rates like the ones we have in the United States indicate that a criminal justice system is perpetuating a crime cycle, rather than rehabilitating or reforming its prisoners. High recidivism rates in the United States are first and foremost caused by high incarceration rates and high juvenile incarceration rates. Other causes are a focus on punishment in our …

Blockholder Mutual Fund Participation In Private In-House Meetings, Robert Bowen, Shantanu Dutta, Songlian Tang, Pengcheng Zhu
Accounting Faculty Articles and Research
The Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) in China is unique worldwide in requiring disclosure of the timing, participants, and selected content of private in-house meetings between firm managers and outsider investors. We investigate whether these private meetings benefit hosting firms and their major outside institutional investors—blockholder mutual funds (i.e., funds with ownership ≥5%). Using a large data set of SZSE firms, we find that blockholder mutual funds have more access to private in-house meetings, and top management is more likely to be present, especially when a meeting is associated with negative news. Furthermore, when blockholder mutual funds attend negative-news meetings with …

Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) have long proven their worth as liquid securities that give investors access to many real estate asset classes. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (“DAOs”) are one of several blockchain real estate innovations seeking to provide a new path to those searching to invest in real estate. While the success of the DAO model of real estate investment is far from assured, these new investment options could offer real competition to REITs one day.

The Impact Of Stakeholder Orientation On Tax Avoidance: Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Gary Chen, Ani Manakyan Mathers, Bin Wang, Xiaohong Wang
Finance Faculty Research and Publications
We study the effect of stakeholder orientation on corporate tax avoidance. Using the staggered passage of constituency statutes across U.S. states between 1983 and 2006, we show that greater stakeholder orientation results in increased tax avoidance. We further find greater tax avoidance among firms with limited financial resources and that employees benefit from the change. Our results are consistent with stakeholder salience theory that resource-constrained managers prioritize the claims of salient stakeholders, such as employees, at the expense of secondary stakeholders, such as the government.

Cryptocurrency is an emerging asset in the financial field designed to act as an alternative medium of exchange to fiat currency. The researcher explores the value, function, and regulation of cryptocurrency to explain the complex system and provide insight into the asset’s prospects. The conclusion indicates that cryptocurrency has a wide variety of uses beyond traditional currency transactions. It also indicates that the recent downturn in the cryptocurrency market is correlated to the drop in the stock market that began in 2021 and is prolonged by economists’ fears of a recession in 2023. Future research should monitor whether the cryptocurrency …
