Three Essays On Information Asymmetry Across Heterogenous Agents, Shenru Li 2022 West Virginia University

Three Essays On Information Asymmetry Across Heterogenous Agents, Shenru Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis models and explores agents’ decisions in reaction to events that serves to increse the heterogeneity among agents. The analysis is conducted on three aspects of financial economics. In chapter 2, we empirically examine how trading by peers on a new platform influences others’ adoption decision. We model the adoption process and find the relationship to be U-shaped, with first movers greatly discouraging their peers from adoption, while late movers slightly discouraging or encouraging their peers.

In chapter 3, we investigate how managerial incentives influence corporate social responsibility (CSR). We examine the staggered adoption of corporate opportunity waiver laws …

Tax Avoidance, Corporate Governance, And Corporate Policies, Yang Yang 2022 West Virginia University

Tax Avoidance, Corporate Governance, And Corporate Policies, Yang Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation includes three essays examining the interactions between tax avoidance, corporate governance, and corporate policies. The first essay exploits corporate governance shocks induced by cross-listing in the U.S., and find that firms tend to engage in less tax avoidance after cross-listing. This effect is more pronounced for firms that experience significant improvements in corporate governance, and for firms from countries with weaker shareholder protection and disclosure requirements. Taken together, the results indicate that cross-listing in the U.S. helps align the interests of managers and shareholders and reduces managerial diversion.

The second essay examines the importance of tax avoidance to …

Climate Change And Sustainability In Asean Countries, David K. DING, Sarah E. BEH 2022 Singapore Management University

Climate Change And Sustainability In Asean Countries, David K. Ding, Sarah E. Beh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The ASEAN region is one of the most susceptible regions to climate change, with three of its countries—Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand—among those that have suffered the greatest fatalities and economic losses because of climate-related disasters. This paper reveals that the ASEAN’s environmental performance is sorely lagging other regions despite evidence of its cohesive and comprehensive efforts to mitigate emissions and build up adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters. Within the ASEAN, there exist gaps in environmental performance between each country. This suggests that increased cooperation between individual ASEAN countries is pertinent for the region to collectively combat climate change. In …

Treasury Inconvenience Yields During The Covid-19 Crisis, Zhiguo HE, Stefan NAGEL, Zhaogang SONG 2022 Singapore Management University

Treasury Inconvenience Yields During The Covid-19 Crisis, Zhiguo He, Stefan Nagel, Zhaogang Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In sharp contrast to most previous crisis episodes, the Treasury market experienced severe stress and illiquidity during the COVID-19 crisis, raising concerns that the safe-haven status of US Treasuries may be eroding. We document large shifts in Treasury ownership and temporary accumulation of Treasury and reverse repo positions on dealer balance sheets during this period. We build a dynamic equilibrium asset pricing model in which dealers subject to regulatory balance sheet constraints intermediate demand/supply shocks from habitat agents and provide repo financing to levered investors. The model predicts that Treasury inconvenience yields, measured as the spread between Treasuries and overnight-index …

Two Essays On The Evolution And Role Of Short Selling Activity In Financial Markets, Wanxi Zhao 2022 University of Central Florida

Two Essays On The Evolution And Role Of Short Selling Activity In Financial Markets, Wanxi Zhao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

My dissertation studies the evolution and role of short selling activity in financial markets. My first essay examines the cross-sectional and time-series variations in the characteristics of equity lending market in the setting of IPO, where, as suggested by Duffie et al. (2002), search frictions are likely to be high. I find that the initial supply of lendable shares and short interest levels increase with offer size, while initial lending fees decrease with offer size. The initial lending fees are also positively related to the bargaining power of lenders and negatively related to the bargaining power of borrowers. The supply …

Learning To Manipulate A Financial Benchmark, Megan Shearer, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Michael P. Wellman 2022 University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Learning To Manipulate A Financial Benchmark, Megan Shearer, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Michael P. Wellman

Law & Economics Working Papers

Financial benchmarks estimate market values or reference rates used in a wide variety of contexts, but are often calculated from data generated by parties who have incentives to manipulate these benchmarks. Since the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) scandal in 2011, market participants, scholars, and regulators have scrutinized financial benchmarks and the ability of traders to manipulate them.

We study the impact on market welfare of manipulating transaction-based benchmarks in a simulated market environment. Our market consists of a single benchmark manipulator with external holdings dependent on the benchmark, and numerous background traders unaffected by the benchmark. We explore two …

Establishing A Management Performance Measurement System; Defining And Selecting Kpis, Dimitrios V. Siskos 2022 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Establishing A Management Performance Measurement System; Defining And Selecting Kpis, Dimitrios V. Siskos

Publications

Managers and constituents of industries are increasingly concerned about measuring and managing organizational performance. However, launching a new measurement system goes beyond defining new metrics or developing new displays of existing data. However, as Bourne and Neely (2003) point out, there is some evidence that many of these implementations are not successful. This paper initially examines the most difficult elements in establishing and launching a management performance measurement system. The next step after the establishing of a performance measurement system, is to specify the essential elements in defining and selecting KPIs. Unfortunately, different people have very clear and different definitions …

Concept Links And Return Momentum, Qianqian DU, Dawei LIANG, Zilin CHEN, Jun TU 2022 Southwestern University of Finance and Economics

Concept Links And Return Momentum, Qianqian Du, Dawei Liang, Zilin Chen, Jun Tu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Unlike traditional asset categories (e.g., industry classifications) that are generally defined clearly, some groups of stocks are tied to certain loosely defined “concepts” (e.g., e-commerce). When investors find it difficult to analyze ambiguous concept-oriented information, information diffuses slowly, creating “concept momentum”. Based on unique concept data in the Chinese stock market, this study constructs a concept-momentum strategy that involves buying stocks from past winning concepts and selling stocks from past losing concepts, which can generate pronounced abnormal returns. Neither risk factors, firm-level momentum, nor industry-level momentum can explain concept momentum. Furthermore, we find that both the underreaction and cross-stock lead-lag …

The Influence Of International Oil Price Fluctuation On The Exchange Rate Of Countries Along The “Belt And Road”, Yijing WANG, Xueqing GENG, Kun GUO 2022 Singapore Management University

The Influence Of International Oil Price Fluctuation On The Exchange Rate Of Countries Along The “Belt And Road”, Yijing Wang, Xueqing Geng, Kun Guo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, the international crude oil price has become increasingly volatile. It influences the exchange rate changes of relevant countries through economic growth, price level, international balance of payments, and other channels. Such exchange rate fluctuations have caused certain risks for the development of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative. This article analyzes the impact of oil price changes on the exchange rates of countries. Because the fluctuation of oil prices and exchange rates has shown the characteristics of multiple time scales, this study used the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method to obtain the long-cycle and short-cycle sequences of oil …

Defining Smart Contract Defects On Ethereum, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xiapu Luo, Ting Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts are programs running on a blockchain. They are immutable to change, and hence can not be patched for bugs once deployed. Thus it is critical to ensure they are bug-free and well-designed before deployment. A Contract defect is an error, flaw or fault in a smart contract that causes it to produce an incorrect or unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways. The detection of contract defects is a method to avoid potential bugs and improve the design of existing code. Since smart contracts contain numerous distinctive features, such as the gas system. decentralized, it is important …

Policymaker Discourse In Colorado Public Higher Education Appropriations, Nathan Willers 2022 University of Denver

Policymaker Discourse In Colorado Public Higher Education Appropriations, Nathan Willers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

State funding for higher education is one of the most pressing issues facing both institutions and policymakers in 2022. Colorado has seen significant declines in the amount of state funding per student over the past two decades, resulting in increases in student burdens for tuition. Policy discourse analysis through a poststructural and neoliberal lens provided insight towards the legislative process and the discursive themes utilized by Colorado policymakers during the 2021-22 legislative budgeting cycle. Twelve artifacts were analyzed, including a mix of policy briefs, hearings, and budget and appropriations reports, for discursive data related to the state’s appropriations for public …

The Relationship Between New Foreign Direct Investment And U.S. All Industry Sales, Sherron Alexander Jackson 2022 Walden University

The Relationship Between New Foreign Direct Investment And U.S. All Industry Sales, Sherron Alexander Jackson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In the global production network, multinational corporations can squeeze domestic firms out of local markets. Nationally, economic developers are concerned about all industry sales as a symbol of the economic advantages featured in regional business production. Grounded in ownership, location, and internalization theory, the purpose of this ex post facto study was to examine the relationship between (a) new foreign direct investment (NFDI) for acquisition projects, (b) NFDI for greenfield establishment projects, (c) NFDI for greenfield expansion projects, and (d) all industry sales in the United States. Data were collected from the 2019 U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) archival …

Marketing Segmentation Strategies For The Nonprofit Sector, Neffie Gatewood

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many nonprofit leaders lack innovative marketing strategies to secure funding from their target audience. Nonprofit leaders who do not continue to expand on their marketing strategies may fail to secure multiple funding streams, leading to an inability to attain their mission. Grounded in the segmentation, targeting, and positioning theory, this qualitative single case study was conducted to explore the traditional and social media marketing strategies used by nonprofit leaders to secure funding from their target audience. The participants were two senior leaders from a nonprofit organization in the U.S. Midwest region. Data were gathered using semistructured interviews, financial data, organizational …

Corporate Governance Attributes Of Board Independence And Board Education As Predictors Of Financial Performance Of Banks In South Sudan, Dier Tong Ngor-Chol 2022 Walden University

Corporate Governance Attributes Of Board Independence And Board Education As Predictors Of Financial Performance Of Banks In South Sudan, Dier Tong Ngor-Chol

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Corporate governance has attracted much attention in the past few years due to cycles of corporate scandals and frauds that have resulted in momentous cases of financial failures and the collapse of some major corporations. Although the renewed interest in corporate governance has generated considerable insights and a better understanding of the prevailing corporate governance practices, much of this interest has concentrated on experiences in developed and emerging economies. There remains a significant lack of understanding of the practice and impact of corporate governance on firms’ performance in developing countries. This quantitative, nonexperimental study tested the predictive relationship between corporate …

A Theoretical Approach In Explaining The Impact Of Remittances On The Macroeconomy: Evidence From An Overlapping Generations Model For The Philippines, John Paolo R. Rivera

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Despite the constraints posed by the coronavirus pandemic on the global movement of migrant workers, cash remittance inflows remained to be a significant component of the Philippine economy. It still comprises a significant proportion of the economy’s gross domestic product and exceeds the influx of overseas development assistance and foreign direct investments. On top of the various empirical studies discussing the effects of remittances on the macroeconomy, I took the theoretical approach in explicating its impact on the macroeconomy. Through a micro-founded macro-model overlapping generations model, I trace the effects of remittances on the path of steady-state aggregate income, capital …

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The study aims to emphasize the importance of knowledge of audit quality on Public Accountant Firm (PAF) selection for a company by employing a 2x1 factorial design between-subject. To achieve this goal, we identified differences between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given knowledge of audit quality, whereas the control group had no treatment during the process selection of PAF. There were 10 indicators used in term of audit quality, namely audit workload, business expertise, audit turnover, audit hours, result of employee satisfaction surveys, partner compensation, result of client satisfaction surveys, PCAOB inspection results, restatements on audit …
