Creating Their Own: A Cross-National Examination Of New Venture Creation, Leif W. Lundmark, Brent B. Clark 2024 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Creating Their Own: A Cross-National Examination Of New Venture Creation, Leif W. Lundmark, Brent B. Clark

Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship

What drives entrepreneurial activity and new venture creation? Common explanations within the entrepreneurship literature include the degree of available resources, the cultural inclinations of the society, and the institutional environment in which the activity occurs. Despite continued interest in this area of research, empirical findings remain largely inconclusive. Moreover, relatively few studies have empirically examined the various determinants concomitantly. Relying on panel data from 79 countries, we examine the asymmetrical impact of resources, culture, and institutions on both formal and informal entrepreneurial ventures. We find that higher levels of human capital, financial capital, and technological development lead to increased levels …

The Economics Of The ‘Buy Local’ Trend, Susweta Ray, Konstantinos Giannakas

Cornhusker Economics

The results of our study underline the significance of the explicit consideration of consumer and producer heterogeneity and the size and type of the locality when analyzing the market and welfare impacts of the ‘Buy Local’ trend. In addition to providing important new insights on the market and welfare impacts of the ‘Buy Local’ trend, our analysis can also provide a valuable theoretical grounding for empirical studies aimed at quantifying the economic impacts of the trend in different food product markets as well as the impact of current and emerging policies affecting the markets for local foods.

Empowering Entrepreneurial Evolution: A Beyond Founder Strategic Approach To Small Business Growth, D. Jared Knisley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growing a business beyond its founder’s capacities and talents presents a challenging undertaking. When a founder is no longer involved or motivated to grow the business, firm decline is a likely outcome. Small businesses often have a deep and, at times, hindering reliance on their early founders for development. Therefore, a continuous engaging plan to advance entrepreneurial success is needed to grow a small business.

My research objective aims to find methods and designs, through academic literature and practitioner interviews, that transition leadership responsibilities and increase team empowerment within a small business, enabling these firms to continue growing as the …

Biodiesel Recycling From Used Cooking Oil And Grease, Hyeong-Gyu Choi 2024 University of Nebraska at Kearney

Biodiesel Recycling From Used Cooking Oil And Grease, Hyeong-Gyu Choi

Mountain Plains Business Conference

The proposed idea is to establish a biodiesel fuel operation by recycling used cooking oil, partnering with regional restaurants. Biodiesel can be produced by combining alcohol with vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled cooking grease. Sourcing biodiesel from used vegetable oil and cooking grease promotes sustainability by minimizing waste and environmental risks, while potentially reducing health hazards. I have partnered with a firm that has achieved a highly efficient production state, but the company is struggling to recruit local restaurants willing to become supply chain partners. We seek ideas on how to recruit local restaurants interested in joining its sustainability …

The 2021 Kansas Rural Grocery Survey: Revaluating Extension’S Role In Rural Grocery Issues, Jacob A. Miller-Klugesherz, Jessica Ramirez, Rial Carver, Erica Blair, Leah J. Tsoodle, Lauren Scheufler

Journal of Extension

Kansas State University’s Rural Grocery Initiative, housed under research and extension, surveyed rural Kansas grocery stores in 2021 (N = 48). This is the second RGI survey, following up on the ownership and customer surveys in 2008. This survey broadly assesses owner characteristics, store features, and challenges. Using descriptive and thematic analyses, we identified two topline conclusions for grocers and their respective Extension services. First, grocers need to identify transition plans earlier and more often. Second, grocers can overcome competition and distribution challenges by diversifying their sourcing, supply, and offerings.

Journal of Global Business Insights

Poverty rates in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have risen, with 47% of the region’s population living in poverty. In Nigeria, approximately 87 million are classified as extremely poor. Existing research on the relationship between entrepreneurship and poverty in this region is fragmented and inconsistent. Traditional economic measures of poverty have proven inadequate, prompting the need for a multidimensional approach. The paper examined the mediating effect of entrepreneurial activity on the relationship between the precursors of entrepreneurship and poverty. The study used a survey method and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the data, which confirmed all hypotheses, revealing …
