Does Minority Ownership Concentration Influence The Relationship Between Board Independence And Tunneling?, Charles Cullinan, Fangjun Wang, Peng Wang, Xi Yu 2014 Bryant University

Does Minority Ownership Concentration Influence The Relationship Between Board Independence And Tunneling?, Charles Cullinan, Fangjun Wang, Peng Wang, Xi Yu

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

Tunneling is a type of expropriation of resources from the minority shareholders of a company by its largest shareholder. Previous research has found mixed results on the relationship between board independence and tunneling, and on the relationship between minority shareholder concentration and tunneling. We examine whether more independent boards may be better at limiting tunneling when there is greater minority shareholder concentration. Using a sample of 3,084 firm-years of Chinese companies, we find a significant interaction between board independence and minority shareholder concentration in a model of tunneling. These results suggest that more independent boards are more likely to inhibit …

Releasing Information In Xbrl: Does It Improve Information Asymmetry For Early U.S. Adopters?, Marshall A. Geiger, David S. North, Daniel D. Selby 2014 University of Richmond

Releasing Information In Xbrl: Does It Improve Information Asymmetry For Early U.S. Adopters?, Marshall A. Geiger, David S. North, Daniel D. Selby

Accounting Faculty Publications

Information released in XBRL is intended to improve the quality and accessibility of SEC filings, leading to less information asymmetry in the equity market. Research findings on the effects of XBRL on information asymmetry in the US., however, are mixed. Kim et al. (2012) reports that XBRL reduces information asymmetry while Blankespoor et al. (2012) reports that XBRL increases information asymmetry. In contrast to these prior studies, we report that the answer as to whether XBRL affects information asymmetry is matter of firm size. In this study we examine shifts in two measures of information asymmetry for early adopters of …

Fraudsters, Churches, Economy, And The Expectations Gap: Applying Trends Of Occupational Fraud To An Assurance Engagement Team Plan And Fraud-Prevention Client Proposal, Jenny Trout

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to present an overview of fraud, including concepts, trends, and controls to in turn, develop an effective assurance work plan as well as a fraud-prevention proposal to a potential client. When KPMG collected data from 348 of their company fraud investigations in 2011, an average of 87 percent were male (3). Around thirty-two percent of fraudsters usually worked in a finance role which gave them access to assets and financial statements. According to Donald Cressy's research, it takes all three elements to be considered fraud: a triangle of motivation, opportunity, and rationalization. However, in …

Environmental Initiatives And Earnings Management, B. Litt, D. S. Sharma, V. D. Sharma 2014 Nova Southeastern University

Environmental Initiatives And Earnings Management, B. Litt, D. S. Sharma, V. D. Sharma

Faculty and Research Publications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide initial evidence on the association between environmental initiatives and earnings management. Prior literature documents firms participating in environmental initiatives to report relatively stronger financial performance. Moreover, firms with superior performance have been shown to engage in greater levels of earnings management. A natural question that arises is to what extent do firms with environmental initiatives engage in earnings management to report better financial performance? Design/methodology/approach – The study draws on two theoretical frameworks, external monitoring and internal corporate culture, to predict an inverse association between environmental initiatives and earnings management. …

Taxing Audit Markets And Reputation: An Examination Of The U.S. Tax Shelter Controversy, John Incardona, Yezen Kannan, Ronald Premuroso, Julia L. Higgs, Ivy Huang

Accounting and Finance Faculty Publications

From 2002 to 2007, the nation’s largest CPA firms faced allegations of illegal activity related to the sale of tax shelters: EY, KPMG and PwC paid fines; KPMG was investigated by a federal grand jury; and EY faced a criminal inquiry. These shelter events occurred shortly after the 2002 collapse of Arthur Andersen, when policy makers were concerned about audit market concentration. This is the first paper to provide a chronological summary of how the tax shelter controversy started and ended. We investigate the stock market reaction to tax shelter news developments between 2003 and 2005 to make inferences about …

Understanding Individual Tax Compliance: Advanced Deductions And Related Issues, Kevin E. Flynn, Phyllis Belak, Glenn S. Soltis

Accounting Faculty Publications

We present a realistic, complex, flexible, classroom-friendly tax case study that is designed to be a late semester comprehensive assignment in a student’s federal income tax education. The assignment could be used as a template when teaching students how to prepare a federal individual income tax return using the actual forms and schedules prepared by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This case is relevant for two reasons: 1) it is contemporary in that it consists of the most recent tax year (2013), and 2) it is highly useful as it comprehensively examines concepts typically covered in the later chapters of …

Financial Reporting Manipulation And The Role Of Religious Ownership: Evidence From Nonprofit Hospitals, Ryan Seay 2014 University of Mississippi

Financial Reporting Manipulation And The Role Of Religious Ownership: Evidence From Nonprofit Hospitals, Ryan Seay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Empirical evidence (e.g. Eldenburg and Vines 2004; Leone and Van Horn 2005; Ballantine et al. 2007; Eldenburg et al. 2011) demonstrates that nonprofit hospital managers respond to competing institutional and regulatory pressures by engaging in various forms of financial reporting manipulation. While some recent research in accounting (e.g. Dyreng et al. 2012; McGuire et al. 2012) shows that religious social norms can deter this undesirable behavior, these studies focus on the private, for-profit sector and use a location-based measure of religiosity. This study extends this line of research by using a more direct measure of religious social norms, the ownership …

Political Rights And Reported Accounting Numbers: An International Study, Chu Chen 2014 University of Texas at El Paso

Political Rights And Reported Accounting Numbers: An International Study, Chu Chen

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

I examine how managers' behaviors, including earnings management and conservatism, are influenced by the political environments in 38 countries. The results indicate that greater political rights are associated with better earnings quality and more conservative reporting. I find that political institutions substitute for legal institutions in terms of managers' discretional behaviors. Specifically, a marginal increase in political rights will produce a smaller reduction in earnings management behaviors in a country with better investor protection. Similarly, a marginal increase in political rights will encourage a less improvement on accounting conservatism in a country with better investor protection.

Subordinate Accountants' Perceptions Of Their Superiors' Leadership And Performance: The Study Of Moderating Variables In The Accounting Profession, Raul Tapia, Jr.

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this Dissertation was to examine whether or not the self-monitoring component of adaptive self-regulation and perceptions of organizational politics moderate an accountant's interpersonal traits (interpersonal power and interpersonal trust) of how they perceived their superiors' performance and leadership ability. Accounting is a very diverse field in which individuals must work closely with their superiors to accomplish given tasks. With regulations and high principles that must be followed in daily work, accountants must act in large part to the expectations of others to complete their tasks correctly. Accountants who trust their superiors and have more confidence in his/her …

Enhancing Student's Learning With E-Portfolios In Financial Disciplines., Lucia Morales, Amparo Soler-Dominguez Dr., Valentina Tarkovska 2014 Technological University Dublin

Enhancing Student's Learning With E-Portfolios In Financial Disciplines., Lucia Morales, Amparo Soler-Dominguez Dr., Valentina Tarkovska

Articles

This study explores the contribution ePortfolios can make to the learning process when they are implemented in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), specifically in financial subjects. The idiosyncrasy of this particular discipline and the technical difficulties arising during the course require resourc es that can keep students engaged and constructively consolidate the contents learnt. The ePortfolio successfully performs these functions. Additionally, ePortfolio use promotes self- regulated learning, ultimately facilitating comprehension and enjoyment of the financial environment. Our findings suggest that students prefer to be more active in the classroom, and the learning-by-doing approach therefore appears to be more effective in technical …

Tax-Induced Earnings Management, Auditor Conservatism, And Tax Enforcement, Yongbo LI 2014 Lingnan University

Tax-Induced Earnings Management, Auditor Conservatism, And Tax Enforcement, Yongbo Li

Theses & Dissertations

Prompted by the recent statutory corporate income tax-rate reduction in China, in this study I investigate whether the constraining effect that quality auditors have on tax-related discretionary current accruals (DCA) differs for two sub-groups of listed firms with tax incentives to manage earnings upward versus downward. I also explore whether the effectiveness of tax authority scrutiny (i.e. tax enforcement) on DCA differs for the same two groups.

I find that the firms’ two external monitors are sensitive to the direction of managerial incentives for earnings management. Specifically, higher-quality auditors are associated with smaller amounts of reported DCA and this association …
