Current research generally questions that the healthcare system does not provide as adequate services for the LGBT community as there are for heterosexuals. Baumle’s research show that health care benefits were not equal for LGBT and provided health insurance percentages were lower for gays and lesbians than for heterosexuals (2014). As part of UHS, the largest comprehensive healthcare system in the Southern Tier of New York State, the UHS Palliative Medicine Program serves patients with serious, chronic, and/or terminal illnesses, such as cancer, dementia, heart disease, and lung disease. Staffed by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and social workers, the program takes a holistic approach to the management of these illnesses, with the goal of maximizing quality of life through the end of life. An Identification Of The Social And Emotional Needs Of People Living With Post-Lingual Hearing Loss, Dianne Briffa, Fiona Davidson, Danielle Ferndale Ms

Hearing loss is associated with challenges in achieving effective communication which can constrain an individual’s ability to participate in social and work environments, affecting their social and emotional well-being. Through a thematic analysis of focus groups, interview and survey responses from 41 people experiencing post-lingual hearing loss, we identified an overarching theme of adjusting to impaired communication and three sub-themes in which we were able to identify the unmet social and emotional needs of people who are hard of hearing. In light of our analysis we discuss and offer recommendations specific to meeting the needs of this population.

Background

Pharmaceutical expenditure growth is a familiar feature in many Western health systems and is a real concern for policymakers. A state funded General Medical Services (GMS) scheme in Ireland experienced an increase in prescription expenditure of 414 % between 1998 and 2012. This paper seeks to explore the rationale for this growth by investigating the composition (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Group level 1 & 5) and drivers of GMS drug expenditure in Ireland in 2012.

The National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems has followed a nationally-representative cohort of U.S. communities since 1998 to measure the scope of public health activities implemented in each community and the range of organizations and sectors that contribute to each activity. With 16 years of follow-up observations, this survey allows us to study the effects of demographic, economic, and policy shocks on public health delivery systems, and estimate the health effects attributable to delivery system change.

Brazil’s 1988 health reform created the Unified Health System (SUS). SUS is a universal health system that emulates British National Health Service, featuring an open-ended benefit package and a major goal of health equity. Can nurses who have not been involved in guided operating theatre experience care for patients before and after surgery with the same level of knowledge and expertise as those who have?

This paper will present an overview of a national mixed methods research project that investigated these issues, comparing different models of operating theatre education offered in Australia. Transferable skills learned via operating theatre experience that may be useful in the surgical wards will be explored and also possible correlations between students’ experiences in this specialty area and recruitment and retention of staff to this specialist area.

A structured approach to communication between health care professionals contains introduction/identification; situation; background; assessment and request/recommendation (ISBAR). ISBAR was introduced into the post-anaesthetic care unit (PACU) of a large Victorian health service in 2013. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of an education program on ISBAR compliance.

Method: A pre/post-test design using a 14-item audit tool was used to measure compliance to ISBAR before and after an education intervention in two acute hospitals in Melbourne, Victoria. The aim of this study was to identify which items should be included in a pre-operative checklist based on recommendations by nurse experts in order to promote patient safety and effective communication in the perioperative environment.

Method: Thirty-five nurses participated in this e-Delphi study, which was conducted online via SurveyMonkey.. Each survey presented participants with a list of potential items for inclusion in a pre-operative checklist. Health systems are beginning to recognize the tremendous opportunity that globalization and international activities present for Academic Health Science Centres. This study explored the nature of international agreements within Ontario Academic Health Science Centres (OAHSC) and presents the exploratory findings to begin to develop an academically defensible body of literature on the topic.
