Systematic Literature Review Of Indoor School Exposure To Pm2.5 In Children, Brittany Wagner, Ami Zota

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that puts a strain on lung function and breathing. It is the leading cause of school absenteeism and hospitalization for American children. Genetics play a major role in allergy related disease development such as asthma, but environmental exposures are proving to be a potential contributor to childhood asthma. Despite the sufficient data regarding air pollution, there is a huge knowledge gap regarding indoor air quality and its relationship with health outcomes such as asthma. Many of the studies available only look at outdoor air pollution levels, while children spend the majority of their time …

(Video) Characterizing The Exposome: Critical Analysis Of Exposome-Wide Association Studies, Marlee Nelson, Matias Attene Ramos

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Purpose: The exposome is a conceptual framework of all exposures encountered by an individual in his or her lifetime. Studying the exposome is thereby a monumental feat that may require extensive research, conceptualization, and proof-of-concept analyses. Researchers have begun studying the exposome by developing exposome- and environment-wide association studies (EWAS). Since EWAS is such a novel technique, this critical analysis of existing EWAS in the literature sought to determine whether the studies utilized common research methods, how the data were analyzed, and whether the analyses were similar. The analysis also sought to explore ways in which these studies could inform …

Implications Of Foodborne Bacteria On Human Health: Isolation And Antibiotic Resistance Of Salmonella Enterica And Campylobater Spp. On Retail Chicken Sold In California, Grace Rahman, Lance Price, Hanna-Grace Rabanes

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Overuse of antibiotics contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which continues to be a growing threat to human health. In the United States, industrial food animal production (IFAP) is a formidable driver for antibiotic use. Prior work has focused on the link between antimicrobial use in poultry and human AMR infections. Common foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella enterica (S. enterica) along with Campylobacter coli (C. coli) and Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) are commonly associated with human gastroenteritis. However, it has been shown that these pathogens are capable of causing disease outside of the gastrointestinal tract, specifically urinary tract infections (UTIs). …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Gaze-Based Training Intervention On Latent Hazard Anticipation Skills For Young Drivers: A Driving Simulator Study, Yusuke Yamani, Pinar Biçaksiz, Dakota B. Palmer, Nathan Hatfield, Siby Samuel

Psychology Faculty Publications

A PC-based training program (Road Awareness and Perception Training or RAPT; Pradhan et al., 2009), proven effective for improving young novice drivers' hazard anticipation skills, did not fully maximize the hazard anticipation performance of young drivers despite the use of similar anticipation scenarios in both, the training and the evaluation drives. The current driving simulator experiment examined the additive effects of expert eye movement videos following RAPT training on young drivers' hazard anticipation performance compared to video-only and RAPT-only conditions. The study employed a between-subject design in which 36 young participants (aged 18-21) were equally and randomly assigned to one …

The Effect Of Ammonia On The Germination And Outgrowth Of Bacillius Globigii, Joseph B. Kunicki 2018 Air Force Institute of Technology

The Effect Of Ammonia On The Germination And Outgrowth Of Bacillius Globigii, Joseph B. Kunicki

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the germination and outgrowth of Bacillus globigii in the presence of ammonia in laboratory scale experiments. Germination was measured by monitoring the release of dipicolinic acid, an organic compound present in bacterial spores, while outgrowth was measured using phase-bright microscopy and semi-automated counting procedures. The ammonia-N concentrations investigated generally did not cause statistically significant differences in the initial 1-hr germination rates or the average 3-hr outgrowth rates of Bacillus globigii spores in batch style experiments. The average 1-hr germination rates observed in the absence of ammonia-N was 0.0258 hr-1 for the water and buffer controls and …

A Spline-Assisted Semiparametric Approach To Nonparametric Measurement Error Models, Fei Jiang, Yanyuan Ma 2018 The University of Hong Kong

A Spline-Assisted Semiparametric Approach To Nonparametric Measurement Error Models, Fei Jiang, Yanyuan Ma

COBRA Preprint Series

Nonparametric estimation of the probability density function of a random variable measured with error is considered to be a difficult problem, in the sense that depending on the measurement error prop- erty, the estimation rate can be as slow as the logarithm of the sample size. Likewise, nonparametric estimation of the regression function with errors in the covariate suffers the same possibly slow rate. The traditional methods for both problems are based on deconvolution, where the slow convergence rate is caused by the quick convergence to zero of the Fourier transform of the measurement error density, which, unfortunately, appears in …
