Application Of Functionalized Organosilicas In Adsorption Of Nitrates, Stephen Amoako

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the critical environmental issue of elevated nitrate levels in water bodies, primarily due to excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers and improper waste disposal. It focuses on reducing nitrate concentrations in polluted water to permissible levels through the effectiveness of hybrid materials in nitrate adsorption. We synthesized nine amino-functionalized adsorbents using grafting and sol-gel techniques. Batch adsorption tests confirmed the high nitrate adsorption capacities of these adsorbents, with sol-gel materials showing the highest efficiency due to their abundant amino group contents. Among these, the surfactant-free, sol-gel adsorbent was the most effective, combining ease of synthesis with cost-efficiency. Our …

Cassava is the third most significant calorie source in the tropics. Its processing has changed from traditional methods to stainless steel processing machines. This study investigated the influence of cassava on metal release from two common stainless steels, ASTM 304 and 201, with and without friction, and on tribocorrosion (multianalytically) of 304. Cassava was relatively corrosive and hindered repassivation of the surface oxide of stainless steel, but it also acted as a lubricant against mechanical friction. The combined action of friction and cassava caused a significant increase in iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese release from the stainless steels (30–35- fold …

Comparison Of Various Theoretical Measures Of Aromaticity Within Monosubstituted Benzene, Caleb K. Swain, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The effects of monosubstitution on the aromaticity of benzene are assessed using a number of different quantitative schemes. The ability of the mobile π-electrons to respond to an external magnetic field is evaluated using several variants of the NICS scheme which calculate the shielding of points along the axis perpendicular to the molecule. Another class of measures is related to the drive toward the uniformity of C-C bond lengths and strengths. Several energetic quantities are devised to approximate an aromatic stabilization energy and the tendency of the molecule to maintain planarity. There is a lack of consistency in that the …

The Effect Of Metabolic Modulators On The Rate Of Steady State Water Exchange In S. Cerevisiae Grown In Chemostat Bioreactors, Samantha Mumford, Mark Woods, Johnathan Dutra

Student Research Symposium

Water transport across the lipid bilayer due to osmotic stress causes a change in intracellular volume over time. At isotonic equilibrium there is no change in cell volume and yet water exchange does not stop. Water molecules continue to exchange rapidly with those of the extracellular space. The rate constant for steady state water efflux (kio) can be measured using contrast enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) and the two-site exchange (2SX) model. kio is known to correlate with the cellular energy molecule ATP making it a probable biomarker for metabolic diseases such as cancer. Measurements of k …
