Patrons of a casino sports book use the environment for much more than the instrumental task of sports betting. It is also a place to congregate with other like-minded patrons and through this process complex interactional dynamics develop over time. The social world of the sports book emerges in a designated space for the betting act where patrons meet, interact, and establish a culture to which they adhere.

Increased community interest in sporting events, uncertain economic periods, and accountability of city government spending can increase the need for more awareness of potential economic impact of sports tournaments on host communities. There has been increased research devoted to determining the economic impacts athletic events have on regions, states and cities. This study considers previous empirical studies in U.S. cities concerned with measuring the economic impact of athletic events and uses those as a model to assess the economic impact of such events in a mid-southern community. It also points out common mistakes when conducting economic impact studies on sports. …

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is a commonly used stretching technique in rehabilitation and athletic competition. The most accepted benefit associated with PNF has been for increasing flexibility; however its definitive effect on muscle power and aerobic fitness remains controversial and relatively unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of prolonged use of PNF on flexibility at the hip, muscle power of the hamstring and aerobic capacity measured during submaximal exercise. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership behaviors of coaches within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport. A secondary purpose was to gain greater insight into the democratic and positive feedback leadership behaviors of male and female coaches in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). Three hundred and ninety-six head coaches in the CCCU participated in the study; 320 (80.5%) males and 76 (19.5%) females. The participants completed the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (Zhang, J., Jensen, B.E., & Mann, B.L., 1997). The results of the study …

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) is hypothesized to be a critical upstream regulator of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-regulated protein synthesis with muscle contraction. We utilized a mouse model that expresses a skeletal muscle specific dominant-negative IGF-I receptor to investigate the role of IGF-I signaling of protein synthesis in response to unilateral lengthening contractions (10 sets, 6 repetitions, 100. Hz) at 0 and 3. h following the stimulus. Our results indicate that one session of high frequency muscle contractions can activate mTOR signaling independent of signaling components directly downstream of the receptor.

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida publishes the Racial and Gender Report Card to indicate areas of improvement, stagnation, and regression in the racial and gender composition of professional and college sports personnel and to contribute to the improvement of integration in front office and college athletics department positions. Each year the National Basketball Association (NBA) has made progress in almost all categories examined for both race and gender.

Acute exercise and exercise training may influence putative endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) number and colony forming units (CFU-ECs), although the mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the effects of in vitro thrombin supplementation and acute exercise on CFU-EC gene expression, associated with cellular proliferation and differentiation. The effect of habitual physical activity was evaluated through analysis of EPCs from chronically high- and low-active men. Participants were healthy high- and low-active men (n = 23), aged 55-80 yr. Circulating CD34+/VEGFR2+ number, CFU-ECs, plasma prothrombin fragment (F1+2), and thrombin-antithrombin III were measured at rest and after 30 min of exercise. Gene expression …

The purpose of the study was to determine if visualization is effective in improving accuracy and velocity of NCAA Division I baseball pitchers. Subjects were 17 of the 21 pitchers on the Arkansas State University baseball team. They ranged in age from 18 to 23 years There were three data collections. Subjects were assigned a 15 minute slot for data collection. Subjects in the control group did not listen to the visualization tape at any time during the study. The treatment group did six days of treatment for two weeks, resulting in a total of 12 treatments. Each treatment session …
