The Effect Of Descriptive Norms On Resistance Exercise Self-Efficacy In College-Aged Females 2016, Justin Kompf
Master's Theses
Resistance training is a form of physical activity that provides substantial health benefits. Despite these widespread benefits, participation in resistance training is considerably low, particularly among females. To engage in a skill-related activity such as resistance training, individuals need to have confidence in their abilities. Self-efficacy is a cognitive construct that is used to describe situation-specific self-confidence. Descriptive norms are a type of social norm that describes the behavior of others. Descriptive norms have been useful in positively changing health related behaviors. The exact mechanism of how descriptive norms alter behavior is unknown. However, it has been show in research …

The Effect Of Athletic Stadiums On Communities, With A Focus On Housing, Dominique Wilkins
Sustainability and Social Justice
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research is to examine the role of athletic stadiums in the gentrification of minority neighborhoods. New athletic stadiums have increasingly been constructed in low- and moderate- income areas with high minority populations, and results in the displacement of that community’s longstanding residents. This paper uses Census and American Community Survey (ACS) data as part of a case study of the Washington Nationals Stadium in Washington DC; the data shows that within a few years of construction, the community that previously boasted an affordable housing stock and a high low-income minority population is replaced with high-income, …

The top endorsed athletes in the world are most likely the ones who have the biggest impact on their sport. These athletes are usually among the best in their sport or they might have something special that creates a strong relationship between the athlete and his or her fans. It is possible to say that this relationship combined with their skills on and off of the fields, courts, or arenas is what makes these athletes special. Big companies all over the world feel attracted to these athletes and, as a result, they spend millions of dollars every year in order …

Understanding How The Southeastern Conference Football Teams Use Twitter Through A Content Analysis, Kristin Elise Pearson

The influence of Social media on intercollegiate athletic departments has been prominent in the past few years. Research on Social media and intercollegiate athletics is limited; therefore, it is necessary to research how the departments are utilizing Social media. With the agenda setting theory as a foundation, this study explores how the 14 SEC football teams are utilizing Twitter. A total of 3,176 tweets were collected from two constructed weeks. Collegiate Student-Athlete Perceptions Of The Impact Of Concussion On Academic Performance, Robert H. Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to indicate the experiences of collegiate student-athletes in meeting academic demands when experiencing prolonged recovery from concussion and if they perceive a need for academic accommodations. There is a gap in present concussion and an absence of studies that examine if academic accommodations are helpful during concussion recovery. The study was guided by 3 research questions focused on the return to learn during the recovery process. The study was limited to 9 student-athletes currently enrolled at three postsecondary institutions: Christian Brothers University, Rhodes College, and the University of Memphis. Comparison Of Physical Activity And Sleep Measures Based On Subjective And Objective Measures., Amy Jo Walden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sleep times and patterns are related to sport performance. Previous research suggests that sleep patterns contribute to differences in laboratory maximal effort treadmill tests, but little research has been done on maximal effort testing in the field. Further, research is lacking on whether sprint and acceleration times are correlated to sleep patterns. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if a relationship exists between field performance testing and sleep patterns in female high school field hockey players. METHODS: Within the first week of pre-season training female high school field hockey players (n=15, age=15.47±1.06) completed a demographic …

How The University Of Arkansas’ Change In Conference Affiliation Set Off Realignment In Intercollegiate Athletics, Matthew Jones
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The era of realignment within the conferences that make up the largest football-playing division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association can be traced to one event.
In the 1984 Supreme Court case NCAA v. Board of Regents, the court ruled the NCAA had violated antitrust laws by not allowing individual colleges to negotiate their own TV contracts for football games. The decision nulled and voided existing TV contracts with the NCAA, allowing a free market for colleges. Many programs partnered with the College Football Association to negotiate TV contracts in the 1980s and early ‘90s.
Five years after the Supreme …

Gendered Self-Presentation On Social Media: A Content Analysis Of Tweets From Unlv Men's And Women's Athletic Teams, Alexandra Nicole White
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
ABSTRACT
This thesis examines how sports teams vary by means of self-presentation on a social media
platform in relation to gender and sport. Building on Erving Goffman’s (1959) constructs of selfpresentation
and operationalizing impression management strategies, this study content analyzed
seven UNLV teams’ Tweets. The analysis spanned from August 2015 to October 2015. Every
Tweet posted, during these three months, from the seven different sporting teams was coded to
compare and contrast the men's teams accounts with the women’s teams accounts, as well as one
account that combines the men’s and women’s team on one Twitter page. The study found …

Men Who Coach Women, Shannel Blackshear
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although Title IX helped to shape athletics in educational settings, the legislation also transformed the world of coaching. Due to the growing demand for competitive female athletics at the collegiate level, the need for qualified individuals to coach women’s sports continues to grow. As colleges and universities continue to create women’s athletic opportunities, coaching collegiate female teams has become equally competitive to coaching male athletes in terms of pay, benefits, compensation packages, and national attention (Welch & Sigelman, 2007). Despite the fact that 57% (Pilon, 2015), of female collegiate athletic teams are coached by male coaches, there is a gap …

Can Nba Teams Benefit From Losing?, Ryan P. Hallisey
Honors Scholar Theses
It has been speculated that franchises in the NBA (national basketball association) lose on purpose because of the benefits that coincide with a team having a poor overall record. Teams that perform the worst are given the highest draft selections in the following season's rookie player draft, thus theoretically improving their chances of becoming a more winning team. Previous economists have used various methodology to prove that NBA teams do in fact lose on purpose; or tank. This paper builds upon this previous methodology to examine the direct impact, negative or positive, that losing on purpose has had on various …

Effects Of A Virtual Training Partner On Cycling Time Trial Performance In Recreationally Active Females, Janae L. Myers
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Introduction. Fatigue is a result of physiological and psychological limits. Associative thoughts (thoughts of physical sensations) and dissociative thoughts (thoughts not regarding physical sensations) compete for attentional focus during exercise and can influence exercise performance and fatigue. Distractions during exercise, such as watching TV or interactive exercise, increase dissociative thoughts and reduce rate of perceived exertion (RPE). Limited research exists regarding the effects of a virtual training partner on exercise performance and fatigue.
Purpose. To examine whether the use of a virtual training partner (ghost) will improve performance by increasing dissociative thoughts. We hypothesized that the use of a ghost …
