The Economics Of Modern Basketball Fandom, Holden Velasco

Capstones

In an increasingly money-sucking economy, many Americans are feeling the aching of their wallets. Basketball, once serving as an escape from the outside world, has now turned into a money-making machine where fans are paying to keep it running. It’s inescapable, whether it’s the rising costs to watch the professionals, forking thousands of dollars for children to play or sports gambling being plastered everywhere. Basketball no longer feels like basketball.

Co-Speech Gestures Destabilize Posture Via Shared Motor-Cognitive Resources, Sasha Lifton Lewis, Weina Lu, Ingo Helmich

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Speaking and gesturing are fundamental aspects of human communication that commonly occur while main- taining upright posture. Although speech and postural control are known to compete for shared motor-cognitive resources, it remains unclear how co-speech gestures affect balance control and their underlying neural mecha- nisms. Using combined behavioral and neuroimaging approaches, we investigated whether co-speech gestures interfere with concurrent postural control, whether this interference depends on the spatial reference frame (egocentric vs. allocentric), and whether dual-task costs arise from competing motor demands, overlapping cog- nitive processes, or both. Forty-one right-handed adults (25.9 ± 6.8 years) maintained posture—monitored via a wearable …

Clinical Considerations For Black Student Athlete Development, Jahnia Margarita Green

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Black student athletes exemplify the complexity of navigating intersecting identities at pivotal points in their development. They are also more likely to make premature commitments to their athletic identity and in turn suffer from psychological distress during times of transition (Beamon, 2012). The focus on Black collegiate athletes is informed by persistent mental health challenges associated with higher levels of competition or transitions (e.g., injury or retirement) within collegiate athletics (Brewer & Petitpas, 2017; Menke & Germany, 2019). This paper aims to develop culturally informed clinical considerations through the analysis of the Black student athlete experience and structural aspects of …
