Sex-Composition Of Children And Fertility Desire In Vietnam, Hai Yen Thi Nguyen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis aims to investigate whether the variation in sex composition of children can explain the variation of Vietnamese women's fertility desire. Vietnam has experienced rapid fertility decline since the middle of the 20th century but within a broader context of strong cultural norms regarding son preference. Thus, the sex composition of children is one of the key determinants of reproductive behavior within Vietnam. To my knowledge, no previous study has examined the relationship between sex composition of children and women's fertility desires in Vietnam. Using data from the 2014 Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) I investigate the association …

Socio Economic Determinants Of Spousal Violence Against Women In Myanmar, Lin Lin Mar
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nowadays, the violence against women by spouses is a hidden social problem embedded in social and cultural norms in Myanmar. However, there are limited numbers of previous studies regarding spousal violence in Myanmar. Some studies utilized a qualitative approach, while some used a quantitative approach in some parts of Myanmar. This study aims to examine whether socioeconomic and demographic factors affecting spousal violence using a quantitative approach to fill the literature gap at the national level. It uses the data from the 2015-16 Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey. The explanatory variables are demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the women, their …

Direct And Indirect Impacts Of Education On Subjective Well-Being Of Older Persons In Vietnam : Gender Differences, Truc Ngoc Hoang Dang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Vietnam, like many developing countries, is undergoing a rapid pace of population ageing but within a resource limited context. Therefore, understanding the factors that are important to later life well-being has become a key policy issue. Using data from the 2011 Vietnam National Aging Survey, this thesis aims to investigate gender differences in the direct and indirect impacts of education on subjective well-being of older Vietnamese based on four domains: happiness, life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression (N=2,789, including 1,683 females and 1,106 males). The results from path analysis show that those with higher level of education are happier and more …

Impact Of Migration And Remittances On Children's Human Capital In Cambodia, Vatana Chea
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation investigates the impacts of migration and remittances on human capital development of left-behind children in Cambodia. It contributes new evidence to a controversial debate in the literature on long-term impacts of migration and of remittances on the children. This is from the perspective of education, health, and consumption in remittance-recipient households compared with those in non-recipient ones. It relies on pooled data from Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey of 2009 and 2014, each of which comprises around 12,000 households in both rural and urban areas across all 25 provinces there. To evaluate the impact on household educational investment, the study …

Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS)
The NASIS survey varies from year to year depending on client needs, but every year a core group of items consisting of common demographics and quality of life measures are included. These include, for example, age, sex, education, community satisfaction, etc (for complete list, see below). These items are asked each year to provide key demographic information to all users of NASIS as well as comparability to other social indicator information.
The core items were reduced in 2018 in an effort to keep NASIS costs as low as possible and reduce respondent burden. You can find the current core items …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Relationships among demographic, socioeconomic and person factors and Opioid Use Disorder diagnosis, treatment, and recidivism were explored. Data from a sample of 4,860 adults with substance use difficulties were analyzed. A program evaluation was conducted on Gateway Community Services to explore the use of Medication Assisted Treatments (MATs) and Psychosocial (PS) treatments to address Opioid Use Disorder. Using archival data, a chi-square analysis and independent sample t-test was performed. The results expressed that a relationship among race, type of substance use diagnosis, and treatment type and recidivism rate was found. While White/Non-Hispanics adults were more likely to use heroin than …

Of Rats And Men, Thomas S. Walsh
Capstones
This capstone is a data-driven investigation into New York City's rat problem. By using publicly available government data to map rat activity in NYC, I identified several socio-economic variables that correlate with rat populations at the community district, borough, and city-scale. I used these findings (mainly that rat problems are linked to lower incomes) as the basis of an investigation, which includes interviews with residents, experts, and city officials. Prof. Bobby Corrigan, urban rodentologist and formerly with the NYC Department of Health criticizes the city's efforts for the first time on the record.

Post-Hurricane Maria Exodus From Puerto Rico And School Enrollment In Florida, Edwin Melendez, Jennifer Hinojosa, Nashia Roman
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
Hurricane Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico and its population has led to a significant exodus to the United States, especially to the state of Florida. Prior estimates of the magnitude of this exodus have been based on movement of passengers or statistical projections based on recent migration trends from Puerto Rico to the United States. In this report, we use post-Hurricane Maria school enrollment data from Florida school districts to assess the population flows from Puerto Rico. School enrollment data is considered a more reliable indicator of permanent migration than other data currently available.

Negative Outcomes Of Teen Sexual Activity: Is There A Regional Effect?, Hannah Latta, Said Shahtahmasebi, Hatim A. Omar

A recent victory with respect to teen sexual behavior is the reduction of the national teen birth rate. In 1991, there were 61.8 births per 1000 females aged 15-19. By 2014, this rate plummeted to 24.2 births per 1000 adolescent females. Averages, however, do not reflect state-level variation. For example, in 2014, Kentucky reported 35.3 births per 1000 adolescent females, while New York reported a teen birth rates of 16.1 births per 1000 adolescent females. This report asks: are these discrepancies due to regional factors, and are these differences statistically significant? To examine rural and urban differences in outcomes of …

Moving Mountains : A Study Examining Long-Term Impacts Of Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining On Mortality In The Appalachian Region Using Geographic Information Sciences Techniques., James Howard Kent Pugh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the last hundred years, the Appalachian region has been dominated by the coal industry. It has also been and currently is one of the unhealthiest regions in the United States. Recent scholarship has examined the relationship between coal mining and health and mortality rates in the Appalachian region. The first study incorporates air quality and pollution data to examine if coal mining counties have higher levels of pollution and if this pollution contributes to mortality disadvantage. In the second study, I construct a population-based coal-exposure measure to better evaluate the relationship between coal mining and health I find that …

The economics curriculum today does not emphasize the study of population. This needs to change immediately because we are in the midst of another demographic sea change, slamming on the brakes right after a rapid acceleration during the last half of the 20th century. Instead of glibly tossing a dependency ratio onto a slide, this paper offers an easy way to improve demographic literacy using population pyramids. Simulation is used to explain the pyramid and its dynamic properties, and then real‐world data are presented. Microsoft Excel’s ability to act as a browser and download data with a single click of …

The Diffusion Of Tolerance: Birth Cohort Changes In The Effects Of Education And Income On Political Tolerance, Philip Schwadel, Christopher R. H Garneau
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Political tolerance—the willingness to extend civil liberties to traditionally stigmatized groups—is pivotal to the functioning of democracy and the well-being of members of stigmatized groups. Although political tolerance has traditionally been more common among American elites, we argue that as tolerance has increased, it has also diffused to less educated and less affluent segments of the population. The relative stability of political attitudes over the life course and the socialization of more recent birth cohorts in contexts of increased tolerance suggest that this diffusion of tolerance occurs across birth cohorts rather than time periods. Using age-period-cohort models and more than …
