A Transcendental Phenomenology Into How Teacher Educators Address Social And Psychological Elements Of Teachers' Professional Identity, Hussein Meihami, Naser Rashidi

The Qualitative Report

Addressing social and psychological elements of teachers' professional identities is crucially important to develop teachers’ knowledge and practice concerning social and psychological issues in their classes. Thus, this study was an attempt to investigate how Iranian EFL teacher educators addressed social and psychological elements in teacher education programs to develop teachers’ professional identities. To that end, a series of phenomenological interviews were conducted with four EFL teacher educators to delve into their past, current, and future practices. Moreover, the syllabi covered by the EFL teacher educators were analyzed as a verification of the data obtained through phenomenological interviews. Explicitation of …

The Qualitative Report

In the book, Exploratory Practice for Continuing Professional Development (2018), the authors, Assia Slimani-Rolls and Richard Kiely, offer a comprehensive description of Exploratory Practice (EP) as a tool for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of language teachers. Through different parts of the diversity and complexity of language teaching in the last few decades, the authors show how teachers in different types of classrooms can grow professionally by working with their students to understand classroom life and explore their classrooms, where teachers are the most important thing to focus on to improve learning processes and outcomes rather than materials, techniques, technologies, …

A Comparative Review Of Qualitative Research: A Guide To Design And Implementation, Biniam Getnet Agazu Mr., Adissu Ketemaw Dejenu Mr., Kenenisa Lemi Debela Dr.

The Qualitative Report

We review Sharan B. Merriam and Elizabeth J. Tisdell’s 2016 book, Qualitative Research: A Guide to Design and Implementation and then compare it to three other introductory to qualitative research texts. We found the Merriam and Tisdell book to be useful for both novice and more experienced researchers. The two authors are highly experienced in qualitative research and their book may provide an opportunity to improve our understanding of qualitative research design and implementation when compared to other different qualitative books.

Journal of Police and Legal Sciences

This study aimed at detecting the impact of watching police cartoon series introduced by different communication channels, such as TV, YouTube, etc. on children's behaviour by conducting a comparative study between two well-known police cartoon series in order to identify which one of them behaved based on promoting children's awareness about delinquency and crime and which one used the educational method about crime and delinquency (intentionally and unintentionally) as well as identifying the most prominent differences between the methods of introducing the cartoon series in each series. In order to achieve the study objectives, the researchers used the comparative approach …

Attempting To Close The Evidence-Practice Gap In Physical Activity Intervention Research: Strategies And Outcomes Of A Co-Creative Qualitative Study, Andrew Powell, Charlotte Coward 2022 Bournemouth University

Attempting To Close The Evidence-Practice Gap In Physical Activity Intervention Research: Strategies And Outcomes Of A Co-Creative Qualitative Study, Andrew Powell, Charlotte Coward

The Qualitative Report

It is argued that a gap exists between research evidence and “real-world” physical activity (PA) intervention practice. One potential way to aid the translatability of evidence in this field is for researchers to work actively with the public health practitioners and organisations that run PA interventions to engage in co-creative research. This paper reports the process and strategies used to underpin research co-creation during a recent qualitative PA intervention study, and the outcomes of the co-creative approach from the perspective of the public health organisation involved in the research in terms of providing them with translatable evidence. A range of …

An Autoethnography Of Becoming A Qualitative Researcher: A Book Review, Ekaterina A. Jegede

The Qualitative Report

Autoethnography has been steadily taking its well-deserved place in the field of the qualitative research in the recent years. As more and more doctoral students consider autoethnography as their research method, the approach is still somewhat mysterious. An Autoethnography of Becoming a Qualitative Researcher offers a rare opportunity to look into one novice researcher’s exploration of becoming a Qualitative Researcher. This review provides an overview of the book, which was published in 2022, as well as an evaluation of its strengths and shortcomings and suggestions for potential audience.

Considering What Counts: On The Clock, Joel Best 2022 University of Delaware

Considering What Counts: On The Clock, Joel Best

Numeracy

For decades, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has presented "crime clocks"--graphs which use clock-face graphs to depict the average time between incidents of particular crimes. Similar devices have been adopted by all sorts of organizations warning that "An instance of X occurs every Y seconds." While this is a popular way of presenting social statistics, it is deeply flawed.

The Qualitative Report

These days, urban agriculture is more than a hobby. It has expanded into a local commercial business, even to an export scale. However, urban farmers who have commercialized their products must adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, which has impacted many aspects of global life. This research used a mixed-method approach. We collected quantitative data from 107 respondents on the household commercialization index, income level, and education level of export-scale-urban farmers in the Bandung metropolitan area, West Java, Indonesia. We also used qualitative data to determine how farmers were adapting to difficult situations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This information …

Exposing The Mythology Of Balance And The Ecology Of Graduate Student Mother Resilience In Covid-19, Carolyn A. Oldham Ph.D., Kelly D. Bradley Ph.D. 2022 University of Kentucky

Exposing The Mythology Of Balance And The Ecology Of Graduate Student Mother Resilience In Covid-19, Carolyn A. Oldham Ph.D., Kelly D. Bradley Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

While the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the once marginalized conversation of academia’s gendered imbalance of opportunity, discussion of its impact on graduate student mothers has remained absent. Resilience has been cited as key to overcoming in the pandemic era with little discussion of how its conceptualization continues to marginalize females in the academy. Our phenomenological study explores graduate student mothers’ conceptualizations of balance, failure, success, and resilience using a family resilience framework which acknowledges the multiple identities to which they may avow and contexts in which they may operate. Employing an ecological conceptual framework, we engaged nine graduate student mothers …

Revisiting Gender Wage Gap In Egypt: Empirical Evidence Using 2018 Elmps Data, Waleed Zaghloul 2022 American University in Cairo

Revisiting Gender Wage Gap In Egypt: Empirical Evidence Using 2018 Elmps Data, Waleed Zaghloul

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies across the different countries suggested that the gender wage gap is not constant in terms of magnitude across the wage distribution adding to the fact that the average wage gap provides limited information on females’ relative position in the labor market. Employing the micro-level data from the Egyptian Labor Force Panel Survey (ELMPS) in 2018, this study investigates the gender wage gap in Egypt across the wage distribution. The quantile regression and the decomposition analysis results in a number of striking results in the Egyptian labor market. The first is that the gender wage gap is not constant …

School Related Criminal Acts, Interpersonal Problems, And Classroom Behaviors As A Function Of The Proportion Of Black Students And Black Teachers, LeAnne Zaire 2022 Seattle Pacific University

School Related Criminal Acts, Interpersonal Problems, And Classroom Behaviors As A Function Of The Proportion Of Black Students And Black Teachers, Leanne Zaire

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

This study’s purpose was to investigate school-level behavioral outcomes in relation to the proportion of Black teachers and students in U.S. schools. Negative school outcome and academic achievement gaps are well-documented. However, many of these studies utilized small, localized populations; my research used national data and focused on the problem behaviors in school. Drawing from Critical Race Theory, I hypothesized that a greater proportion of Black teachers would reduce school student problems and negative behaviors (e.g., student verbal abuse of teachers, widespread disorder in classrooms). After receiving a restricted-use license, I utilized data from 25,818 schools from the National Teacher …

The Craft Of Using Nvivo12 To Analyze Open-Ended Questions: An Approach To Mixed Methods Analysis, Jane Elliott 2022 University of Exeter, UK

The Craft Of Using Nvivo12 To Analyze Open-Ended Questions: An Approach To Mixed Methods Analysis, Jane Elliott

The Qualitative Report

The aim of this paper is to explore and explicate a method for using NVivo12 to analyze the responses to open-ended questions in surveys. It focuses on the features of NVivo12 that facilitate this particular type of mixed-methods research. Open-ended questions are used within surveys across a wide variety of disciplines and provide opportunities for participants to provide their own perspectives on a topic of interest. However, they can be challenging to analyze; if the survey has a large sample size, a very considerable corpus of text will be generated, yet the text associated with any single individual is likely …

“Academic Writing As The Departure Point The Writer Has Chosen For His/Her Academic Career”: A Book Review Of Zhihui Fang’S Demystifying Academic Writing: Genre, Moves, Skills, And Strategies, Elih Sutisna Yanto

The Qualitative Report

In the book, Demystifying Academic Writing, the author, Zhihui Fang, emphasizes the importance of improving the ability of graduate and undergraduate students, as well as early-career scholars, to write for academic purposes. Through a wide range of aspects of academic writing, adopting a functional linguistics perspective, he demonstrates how academic language can be used to think outside the box when it comes to typical tasks such as attracting readers, presenting information, constructing arguments, integrating perspectives, and organizing cross-genre and interdisciplinary texts for having participated in research fields. This well-referenced book is a valuable resource for academic writing as well …

Negotiating The Insider/Outsider Researcher Position Within Qualitative Disability Studies Research, Elizabeth C. Mohler MS, Debbie Rudman 2022 Western University

Negotiating The Insider/Outsider Researcher Position Within Qualitative Disability Studies Research, Elizabeth C. Mohler Ms, Debbie Rudman

The Qualitative Report

The subjectivity of qualitative researchers can be a contribution to qualitative research which at the same time requires commitment to on-going critical reflexivity regarding one’s positionality. More specifically, we address how to navigate the possibility that researcher subjectivity can culminate in role-confusion when the researcher is highly familiar with the research setting or research participants, when positioned as an “insider.” We do this by adopting a critical paradigm approach that investigates the efficacy of “unlearning” as a strategy for challenging one’s assumptions as a researcher, particularly those assumptions that challenge the co-construction of knowledge that extends from research presuppositions. Drawing …

Effect Of Monetary Policy Rate On Market Interest Rates In Nigeria: A Threshold And Nardl Approach, Oluwafemi E. Awopegba, Joseph O. Afolabi, Lydia T. Adeoye, Godwin O. Akpokodje 2022 Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER)

Effect Of Monetary Policy Rate On Market Interest Rates In Nigeria: A Threshold And Nardl Approach, Oluwafemi E. Awopegba, Joseph O. Afolabi, Lydia T. Adeoye, Godwin O. Akpokodje

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examines the effect of monetary policy rate (MPR) on market interest rates in Nigeria. For parsimony, we develop two indexes called the short-term interest rate (SINT) and Lending interest rate (LINT) to represent deposit and lending rates respectively. The nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) and threshold regression models are adopted. The study uses monthly data from 2002:M1 to 2019:M12. The results of the threshold regression model indicate that the degree of the effect of MPR on SINT and LINT above the estimated threshold of 11 and 13 percent respectively is greater and significant than if MPR were to …
