Widening The Disparity Gap: Differences In Outcomes For Racial And Ethnic Groups In Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Programming, Changsoo Song, Jennifer N. Rutt, Mindy Anderson-Knott

This study examined racial and ethnic differences in the outcomes of a universal evidence-based program targeted to children and adolescents. Using data collected in 2015 and 2016 from the Alcohol: True Stories Hosted by Matt Damon program (N = 925), the study found the outcome of perceptions on risk of harm from alcohol use significantly different between the group of White respondents and the group of non-White respondents, and between the group of Hispanic respondents and the group of non-Hispanic respondents. Program effectiveness was found only among White and non-Hispanic respondents, widening the already existing gap between these populations.

Despite the broader academic gains experienced by Hispanic students, who represent the largest minority group in the United States, they remain the least educated of all major ethnic groups, and our understanding of their academic needs and strengths remains woefully inadequate. Therefore, this study examined the risk (e.g., sexual risk taking) and protective factors (e.g., family support, supportive peer networks, and ethnic identity) associated with school importance among Hispanic teens (N = 587) residing in a high-risk, resource poor urban community and the ways in which these relationships vary between adolescent males (46.5%) and adolescent females (53.5%). In the past two decades, income inequality has steadily increased in most developed nations. During this same period, the growth rate of CO₂ emissions has declined in many developed nations, cumulating to a recent period of decoupling between economic growth and CO₂ emissions. The aim of the present study is to advance research on socioeconomic drivers of CO₂ emissions by assessing how the distribution of income affects the relationship between economic growth and CO₂ emissions. OBJECTIVES:

Despite being considered a "model minority," Asian Americans report worse health care encounters than do European Americans. This may be due to affective mismatches between Asian American patients and their European American physicians. We predicted that because Asian Americans value excitement (vs. calm) less than European Americans, they will respond less favorably to excitement-focused (vs. calm) physicians.

METHOD:

การศึกษาเรื่อง "การปฏิบัติต่อผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีในประเทศไทยตามข้อกำหนด (Bangkok Rules" นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัญหาการปฏิบัติต่อผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีในทัณฑสถานหญิงและเรือนจำที่ควบคุมผู้ต้องขังหญิงในประเทศไทยและแนวทางการปฏิบัติต่อผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีในประเทศไทยให้สอดคล้องตามข้อกำหนดกรุงเทพ (Bangkok Rules) การศึกษานี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยศึกษาจากเอกสารและการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth Interview) ผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีที่อาศัยอยู่ในเรือนจำ/ทัณฑสถานตั้งแต่ 6 เดือนขึ้นไปจำนวน 9 คน ผู้ซึ่งถูกควบคุมตัวอยู่ในทัณฑสถานหญิงธนบุรี เรือนจำกลางสมุทรสงคราม และเรือนจำจังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา อีกทั้งสัมภาษณ์เจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ปฏิบัติงานรวม 6 คน และผู้เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะด้านทัณฑวิทยา ผลการศึกษาพบว่าปัญหาการปฏิบัติต่อผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีในทัณฑสถานหญิงและเรือนจำ ได้แก่ ปัญหาด้านสถานที่คับแคบไม่เพียงพอต่อจำนวนผู้ต้องขัง ส่งผลให้ไม่สามารถแยกคุมขังได้ รวมถึงพื้นที่ไม่มีสัดส่วนในการทำกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ด้านงบประมาณจากรัฐไม่เพียงพอต่อจำนวนผู้ต้องขัง ระยะเวลาทำกิจกรรมส่วนตัวไม่เพียงพอ/การไม่มีน้ำใช้ คุณภาพอาหารของเรือนจำบางแห่งไม่เหมาะสม การเยี่ยมญาติของเรือนจำบางแห่งแตกต่างจากที่อื่น ซึ่งให้เยี่ยมน้อยเกินไป ผู้ต้องขังที่ป่วยเป็นโรคเฉพาะไม่ได้รับการรักษาอย่างเต็มที่ อีกทั้งเจ้าหน้าที่ไม่เพียงพอต่อจำนวนผู้ต้องขังและขาดเจ้าหน้าที่ที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทาง และขาดมาตรการทางเลือกในการเลี่ยงผู้กระทำผิดเข้าสู่เรือนจำ การค้นพบที่สำคัญในการวิจัยครั้งนี้คือ เรื่องการตรวจค้นตัวผู้ต้องขังที่อดีตเคยมีการค้นลุกล้ำเข้าไปในร่างกาย ซึ่งถือเป็นเรื่องที่ละเมิดสิทธิมนุษยชนเป็นอย่างยิ่ง โดยจากการศึกษาไม่พบการปฏิบัติเช่นนั้นแก่ผู้ต้องขังแล้ว ข้อเสนอแนะจากผลการศึกษา มีดังนี้ ข้อเสนอแนะเชิงนโยบาย 1)ข้อเสนอให้มีการลดการควบคุมผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีในเรือนจำ 2)ข้อเสนอให้มีการแก้ไขเพิ่มเติมพรบ.ราชทัณฑ์ ในประเด็นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการปฏิบัติต่อผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีให้มีความชัดเจน 3)ควรมีการใช้มาตรการเลี่ยงโทษจำคุก ข้อเสนอแนะเชิงปฏิบัติการต่อทัณฑสถาน 1)ควรเพิ่มอัตรากำลังเจ้าหน้าที่ในสัดส่วนที่มากขึ้น 2) ควรเพิ่มเวลาการทำกิจกรรมส่วนตัว ข้อเสนอแนะเชิงปฏิบัติการต่อเรือนจำชายที่มีแดนหญิง 1) ควรเพิ่มอัตรากำลังเจ้าหน้าที่และเจ้าหน้าที่ที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะ 2)ควรปรับปรุงคุณภาพและปริมาณของอาหารให้เพิ่มมากขึ้น 3) ควรเพิ่มการเยี่ยมญาติ 4) ควรให้เจ้าหน้าที่คัดกรองผู้ต้องขังหญิงระหว่างพิจารณาคดีที่มีโรคประจำตัวเพื่อรับการรักษาที่ต่อเนื่องและป้องกันไม่ให้มีอาการที่รุนแรงมากขึ้น

งานวิจัยเรื่อง "ความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงาน: ศึกษากรณีเจ้าหน้าที่และบุคลากรของโรงพยาบาลตำรวจ" มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาผลกระทบและรูปแบบของความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงาน สาเหตุของความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงาน และเพื่อแสวงหาแนวทางในการป้องกันและการแก้ไขความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงานของเจ้าหน้าที่และบุคลากรในโรงพยาบาลตำรวจ ระเบียบวิธีวิจัย คือ วิธีการวิจัยแบบผสมผสาน โดยกลุ่มตัวอย่างและผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ คือเจ้าหน้าที่และบุคลากรของโรงพยาบาลตำรวจ รวมทั้งสิ้น 204 ราย เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสอบถามแบบออนไลน์และแบบกรอกข้อมูลลงกระดาษสำหรับการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ และเป็นแบบสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งโครงสร้างสำหรับการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ สถิติที่ใช้ คือ หาค่าร้อยละ หาค่าเฉลี่ยเลขคณิต หาค่าส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และหาค่าวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนแบบจำแนกทางเดียว จากผลการวิจัย พบว่า ด้านผลกระทบและรูปแบบของความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงานกลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่พบเจอกับความรุนแรงทางวาจามากที่สุด ในลักษณะของการใช้น้ำเสียงตะคอก และการกล่าวตำหนิ/กล่าวโทษ ผู้กระทำความรุนแรงทั้งทางวาจาและร่างกายที่พบในสถานที่ทำงานมากที่สุด คือ ผู้ร่วมงานภายในหน่วยงานเดียวกัน ผลกระทบที่ได้รับจากเหตุการณ์ความรุนแรงที่เกิดขึ้นส่วนใหญ่ไม่ได้รับบาดเจ็บใดๆ และยังคงทำงานปกติ แต่ในบางรายกระทบต่อความรู้สึก จิตใจ และเลือกที่จะหยุดงาน ย้ายหน่วยงานหรือลาออก ด้านการจัดการกับความรุนแรง กลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่ใช้วิธีพูดคุยหรือบอกเล่าให้บุคคลอื่นรับฟัง และในกรณีที่ไม่บอกเล่าเหตุการณ์ต่อบุคคลอื่น พบว่าเห็นเป็นเรื่องไม่สำคัญและกลัวถูกมองในแง่ลบ ด้านสาเหตุของความรุนแรง กลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่เห็นว่า ปัจจัยที่เป็นผลมาจากสภาพแวดล้อมทางสังคมมีโอกาสส่งผลให้เกิดความรุนแรงได้มากที่สุด ซึ่งประกอบด้วย ความกดดันจากสภาวะเร่งรีบในการปฏิบัติงาน สภาวะแวดล้อมในการทำงานที่มีความเครียด และความกดดันที่เกิดจากความผิดพลาด ในขณะที่กลุ่มตัวอย่างเห็นว่าความแตกต่างทางศาสนาและความเชื่อส่งผลต่อความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงานน้อยที่สุด แนวทางในการป้องกันและแก้ไขปัญหาดังกล่าวจึงควรยึดความแตกต่างเฉพาะบุคคล รูปแบบหรือลักษณะของความรุนแรงที่เกิดขึ้น และมีการนำเทคโนโลยีสำหรับการป้องกันความปลอดภัยมาใช้ นอกจากนี้ผู้บริหารขององค์กรสามารถนำผลการวิจัยมาใช้ในการจัดตั้งโครงการอบรมเพื่อเป็นการสร้างความตระหนักรู้ถึงภัยและผลกระทบของปัญหา และยังเป็นส่วนช่วยในการเตรียมความพร้อมสำหรับการจัดการ หรือการรับมือกับปัญหาความรุนแรงในสถานที่ทำงาน

Environmental Activism Of Teacher-Scholars In The Neoliberal University, Wendy Highby, Sarah T. Romano

This article takes a case study approach to examine social justice-oriented environmental activism of faculty in the context of neoliberalism. As an evolving trend, university corporatization places new economic burdens on universities and their students and has contributed to a tenuous landscape for faculty in terms of academic freedom and job security. In particular, we examine a faculty-led response to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. Drawing on participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and campus-wide survey data, we document this response as a “tempered grassroots leader-ship” approach to workplace inquiry and activism. งานวิจัยเรื่องการเปลี่ยนผ่านสู่ชีวิตในเรือนจำของ "แพะ" ในคดีอาญาเป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (qualitative research) การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) ศึกษากระบวนการปรับตัวของ "แพะ" ในคดีอาญาก่อนถูกคุมขังและระหว่างถูกคุมขังในเรือนจำ 2) ศึกษาปัญหาในการเข้าถึงกระบวนการยุติธรรม "แพะ" ในคดีอาญา 3) ศึกษาผลกระทบของ "แพะ" และครอบครัวของ "แพะ" ในคดีอาญา เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (qualitative research) โดยใช้วิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (in-depth interview) เป็นเครื่องมือหลักในการรวบรวมข้อมูล โดยเป็นการศึกษาวิจัยผ่านเรื่องเล่า (narrative) ของผู้ตกเป็น "แพะ" ในคดีอาญา ศึกษาปัญหาในการเข้าถึงกระบวนการยุติธรรม และศึกษาผลกระทบของผู้ตกเป็น "แพะ"และครอบครัวของผู้ตกเป็น "แพะ" ในคดีอาญา จากการศึกษาวิจัย มีข้อค้นพบดังต่อไปนี้ (1) กระบวนการปรับตัวของผู้ตกเป็น "แพะ" ในคดีอาญา มีองค์ประกอบ 2 ประการ ได้แก่ 1.1 ความเป็นชนชั้นและการปรับตัวสู่เรือนจำ ซึ่งประกอบด้วย ชนชั้นของผู้มีฐานะทางสังคมและผู้ที่มีฐานะทางสังคมที่ด้อยกว่า จุดเปลี่ยนสำคัญที่ทำให้บริสุทธิ์ตกเป็น "แพะ" ในคดีอาญาโดยมีจุดเปลี่ยน 3 ประการ ได้แก่ การเข้าไปอยู่ในสถานที่เกิดเหตุ การรู้จักกับผู้กระทำผิดหรืออาชญากร และการตกเป็น "แพะ" จากความบกพร่องของกระบวนการยุติธรรม ความวิตกกังวลก่อนเข้าสู่เรือนจำเกิดขึ้น 2 ประการ คือ ความวิตกกังวลต่อตนเอง ความวิตกต่อสมาชิกในครอบครัว 1.2 สภาพแวดล้อมในเรือนจำที่ส่งผลต่อการปรับตัว ได้แก่ มิติเชิงพื้นที่ คือ พื้นที่ภายในบริเวณเรือนจำเนื่องจากมีผู้ต้องขังเป็นจำนวนมากทำให้รู้สึกแออัดทางร่างกายและจิตใจ มิติการปฏิสัมพันธ์ซึ่งเป็นการสนทนาระหว่างผู้ต้องขังรายอื่นมีการเล่าประสบการณ์ของแต่ละคนอาจทำให้ลดความวิตกกังวลและทำให้ไม่สามารถลดความเครียดลงได้เช่นกัน กฎระเบียบที่เคร่งครัด ผู้ที่ตกเป็น "แพะ" และผู้ต้องขังรายอื่นต้องปฏิบัติตามกฎอย่างเคร่งครัดซึ่งกฎระเบียบมีทั้งผลดีและผลเสีย ซึ่งผลดีคือการทำให้เกิดความสงบในการอยู่ในเรือนจำส่วนผลเสียก่อให้เกิดความเครียด ความกดดันในการใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในเรือนจำ และกิจกรรมภายในเรือนจำ ซึ่งทุกเรือนจำจะมีการจัดกิจกรรมให้ผู้ตกเป็น "แพะ"ได้เข้าร่วม ได้แก่ กิจกรรมตามเทศกาลต่างๆ กิจกรรมทางศาสนา ทำงานตามกองงานต่างๆ ซึ่งการทำงานในกองงานนั้นเพื่อเป็นการใช้เวลาว่างให้เป็นประโยชน์ มีจิตใจที่สงบ ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน และทำให้ร่างกายแข็งแรง (2) กระบวนการปรับตัวระหว่างถูกคุมขังในเรือนจำ มีองค์ประกอบ 8 ประการ ดังนี้ 2.1 ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อกระบวนการปรับตัว …

Amidst growing reports of abuses and rights violations in immigration detention, the Trump administration has sought to expand the use of immigration detention to facilitate its deportation policy. This study offers the first comprehensive empirical analysis of U.S. immigration detention at the national level. Drawing on administrative records and geocoded data pertaining to all noncitizens who were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in fiscal year 2015, we examine who the detainees are, where they were held, and what happened to them.

The Language Of Protest: Acts Of Performance, Identity And Legitimation, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill

Rooted in the performative of Speech Act Theory, this interdisciplinary study crafts a new model to compare the work we do with words when we protest: across genres (chants, songs, poetry, prose), from different geographies (Turkey, U.S., West Germany, Romania, Great Britain, Guatemala, Northern Ireland) and from different languages (Turkish, Spanish, English, German, Romanian, Ki’che’, Irish Gaeilge). This model generates two new concepts: pragmatic legitimacy, when a hearer recognizes a speech act, regardless of genre, as one of protest; and convocativity, the effect of convoking hearers into distinct camps, creating degrees of solidarity or distance on the protest issue.
