The Importance Of Fit: Fostering Job Satisfaction And Retention In Early Childhood Educators, Heather Carrasco 2019 California State University - San Bernardino

The Importance Of Fit: Fostering Job Satisfaction And Retention In Early Childhood Educators, Heather Carrasco

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The primary objective of this study is to foster career outcomes such as job satisfaction and turnover intentions in early childhood educators (ECEs). ECEs are defined as individuals teaching children from the age range of birth to 5 years old and work in child care programs. The focus on ECEs population was due to the fact they work in demanding environments with little wage incentives, and as a result, they experience high levels of job dissatisfaction, which in turn leads to turnover. Research has demonstrated that most ECEs are intrinsically motivated, but previous research has not quantitatively tested this construct …

Child Welfare: Trauma Informed Practice At Time Of Child Removal, Ester Garcia

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

As of 2018, approximately 442,995 children are in the foster care system in the United States according to the federal statistics from the Children’s Bureau. Entry into the foster system involves the removal of children from their home, making it a traumatic experience. The purpose of this study was to examine social workers’ perceptions of what trauma informed practice means and what it looks like in child welfare removals. The study also clarifies what trauma informed practice (TIP) is and how it can be applied in child welfare’s organizational structure. This was a qualitative study in which child welfare social …

Catalytic Leadership: How A President's Language Influences National Outcomes, CodieAnn DeHaas, Fei Lu, Paul Yost, Stormy Mccarragher, Mackenzie Allison, Jessie Cannon 2019 Seattle Pacific University

Catalytic Leadership: How A President's Language Influences National Outcomes, Codieann Dehaas, Fei Lu, Paul Yost, Stormy Mccarragher, Mackenzie Allison, Jessie Cannon

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

This study investigated the extent to which potential-focused leader language (inclusive, future-focused, and honest) is catalytic. An analysis of US presidential speeches found language was related to historian ratings, unskilled worker wages, and an enduring legacy (internet and book references), but unrelated to social (e.g., patents) and societal (e.g., prison population) outcomes.

Job Transitioning Experiences Of Blue-Collar Employees After Federal Downsizing, Eduardo Hurtado 2019 Walden University

Job Transitioning Experiences Of Blue-Collar Employees After Federal Downsizing, Eduardo Hurtado

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Downsizing, realignment, and closure of military bases have forced many low-skilled, blue-collar federal employees into involuntary job loss and job transition. The impact of involuntary job loss on blue-collar workers has been linked to stress and other adverse psychological effects. There is gap in the literature regarding the lived experiences of federal blue-collar employees following downsizing of military bases. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study was to examine lived experiences of job loss and job transition for federal blue-collar employees following downsizing of military bases. Schlossberg’s transition theory provided a conceptual framework for the study. Ten ex-federal blue-collar …

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

Background: Youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at increased risk for comorbid autoimmune conditions and long-term complications. To help with early identification of these complications, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has published evidence-based screening guidelines. The aim of our quality improvement intervention was to improve and sustain adherence to the ADA recommended screening guidelines to >90% for youth with T1D in the Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) Diabetes Center by utilizing best practice alerts (BPA) within the electronic medical record (EMR).

Methods: In accordance with the ADA Standards of Care screening guidelines for youth with T1D, we analyzed the database …

Validation Of External Organizational Justice Assessment Through Replication, And Examination Of Extraversion, Core Self-Evaluations, And Self-Monitoring As Moderators Of The Relationship Between External Organizational Justice And Organizational Outcomes: A Two-Part Dissertation, Clifton E. Luther

Doctoral Dissertations

In the first portion of this two-part dissertation, I attempted to replicate the findings published in Toaddy (2012), illustrating the relationships between External Organizational Justice (EJ) and a collection of organizational outcomes. In the second portion, I examined how the variables of Extraversion, Core Self-Evaluations (CSE), and Self-Monitoring (SM) moderate the relationships that were established in Toaddy (2012). The implications of this research attempted to illustrate the role that self-assessed personality factors can play in explaining and predicting the behavior of employees due to their perceptions of moral/immoral behaviors of their employers toward external entities. Cases that illustrate the importance …

What You Need To Know About Bar-Code Medication Administration, Marie E. Mcbee Dnp, Msn, Martha Kuhlmann Dnp, Msn, Rn, Fnp, Pmhcns-Bc, Aprn, Pam Patterson Dnp, Msn, Ne-Bc

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

Medication errors are the most common type of preventable error. Bar-code medication administration (BCMA) technology was designed to reduce medication administration errors. Poor system design, implementation and workarounds remain a cause of errors. This paper reviews the literature on BCMA, identifies a gap in the findings and identifies three evidence based practices that could be used to improve system implementation and reduce error. The literature review identified that Bar-code medication administration and system workarounds are well documented and affect patient safety. Based on the critical analysis of 10 studies, we identified gaps in the standardization of BCMA planning, implementation, and …

The Ei Leadership Model: From Theory And Research To Real World Application, Kelly Dyjak LeBlanc 2019 James Madison University

The Ei Leadership Model: From Theory And Research To Real World Application, Kelly Dyjak Leblanc

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Whether a leader or the led, we all can point to examples of ineffective leadership – poor decision making, a lack of vision, inattention to morale, ineffective communication, systemic tendencies toward obstruction, and so forth. Similarly, most of us can identify characteristics that we do and do not esteem in the leaders we have known. The consequences of not attending to what actually is happening at these deep, complex, and interacting levels can mean the difference between success and failure from a leadership and organizational standpoint. The overarching purpose of applying the present leadership model to a real world organizational …

Supervisor-Subordinate Conflict Negotiation: Examining The Core Concerns In Light Of Communication Accommodation And Gender Roles, Piyawan Charoensap-Kelly 2019 University of Southern Mississippi

Supervisor-Subordinate Conflict Negotiation: Examining The Core Concerns In Light Of Communication Accommodation And Gender Roles, Piyawan Charoensap-Kelly

Dissertations

This quasi-experimental study examined a supervisor-subordinate negotiation of an emotion-laden conflict from the lens of the core concerns framework, communication accommodation theory, and gender roles research. Results empirically support CCF that, by accommodating or attending to the employees’ core concerns, managers can stimulate employees’ positive emotion and integrative intention. However, under- and overaccommodating the core concerns can lead to distributive intention. Additionally, the employees’ perception of manager goodwill can strengthen or attenuate the positive effect of core concerns accommodativeness on outcome variables especially for male managers. Thus, moderate accommodation is recommended for male managers. For female managers, the results show …

Proposing A Center For Leadership And Creativity, Jessica S. Murfin

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Leadership and creativity are vital skills for everyone to have in what is now a very competitive and dynamic world. Whether in business or in personal life, these skills can help individuals reach their highest potential. Employers, especially, are finding it increasingly difficult to find employees with these important skills. Academic institutions are simply not preparing students (i.e., future employees) well enough. This is an issue that needs to be remedied as soon as possible. In this project, I am proposing a Center for Leadership and Creativity to be housed on the Western Oregon University campus in Monmouth, Oregon, under …

Grandma Got Passed Over By A Manager: The Intersection Of Age And Gender In Hiring, Alyssa Perez 2019 University of Central Florida

Grandma Got Passed Over By A Manager: The Intersection Of Age And Gender In Hiring, Alyssa Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has demonstrated how age stereotypes influence judgment and decision making at work, but older workers are more than just older. All individuals are members of multiple demographic categories, yet we know surprisingly little about how multiple category membership affects judgments and decision making at work. Competing models have been suggested, such as the category activation and inhibition model (Kulik et al., 2007) and the intersectional salience of ageism at work model (Marcus & Fritzsche, 2015). However, empirical tests of these models are scarce. In the present study, the age and gender of job applicants were manipulated in a mock …

Predicting Counterproductive Work Behavior With Explicit And Implicit Measures Of Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, And Emotional Stability, Jimmy Zheng 2019 University of Central Florida

Predicting Counterproductive Work Behavior With Explicit And Implicit Measures Of Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, And Emotional Stability, Jimmy Zheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study leveraged the stressor-emotion model of CWB, the reflective-impulsive model of behavior, and theories of explicit and implicit personality to investigate the roles explicit and implicit aspects of personality, and work stressors have in influencing CWB. The stressor-emotion and reflective-impulsive models suggest that in addition to reflective (i.e., explicit) processes, impulsive (i.e., implicit) processes may also influence CWB because the act can be motivated by negative emotions induced by frustrating working conditions. Theories of personality and motivation suggest that conscientiousness, agreeableness, and emotional stability predict CWB because these traits motivate people to pursue goals that reduce or increase …

Group Composition Characteristics As Predictors Of Shared Leadership: An Exploration Of Competing Models Of Shared Leadership Emergence, Richard Currie 2019 University of Central Florida

Group Composition Characteristics As Predictors Of Shared Leadership: An Exploration Of Competing Models Of Shared Leadership Emergence, Richard Currie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of leadership in organizations has received much research attention over the past several decades. However, most of this research has examined hierarchical structures of leadership wherein one individual leads, or is perceived to lead, several other individuals. With a growing number of organizations structuring employees within teams or work groups, researchers have begun studying the ways in which leadership operates in groups. One alternative to the traditional hierarchical structure is for leadership to be distributed or shared in groups such that multiple group members contribute to the overall leadership function of the group. As a result, researchers have …
