Informal Partnerships Between Nonprofits And Local Governments And The Role Of Trust, Scott Pozil, Anne Hacker

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Informal partnerships between nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and local governments represent a winning combination for affective positive social change in communities. These partnerships thrive on the development and sustainment of trust as a guiding force between NPO executives and their local government counterparts. Qualitative case study research reveals such an assertion to be true, based on interviews and document reviews of informal partnerships in a metropolitan area in the Northwest United States. The implications for social change include establishing successful models of informal partnerships between NPOs and local governments that impact the social and economic well-being of communities.

When compared to other Americans’ health, a worse health status is seen among the American Indian and Alaska Native population. American Indians and Alaska Natives are faced with numerous disparities in healthcare, such as decreased access to healthcare. Additionally, healthcare data about this group are missing. Although health beliefs and traditions can differ among tribes, there are also similarities. Telemedicine is the use of technology (i.e., phone, videoconferencing) to deliver healthcare. Examining Perceptions Of Crime And Disorder In A Rural University Setting, Ana C. Alcala

The present study responds to the gap in our understanding of perceptions of crime and disorder in younger age groups, and in a rural setting. A survey was administered to collected students’ perception of crime and disorder on campus, of those surveys 655 students responded. A factor analysis using a varimax rotation was used to group similar variables into latent variables. Three factors emerged: (1) general perception of crime and disorder, (2) traffic congestion, and (3) alcohol and drug abuse. Drug use is most prevalent among young adults between ages 18 and 24; this is just one factor that contributes to the high rates of substance use on college campuses. Collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) have been growing in number, awakening the “youth in recovery” movement. This paper presents literature on various tools and elements of recovery, with a focus on CRPs and their significance. The purpose of this paper is to explore the idea that, in the last few decades, collaborative inquiry methods have evolved along a similar trajectory to dual lens research. Local communities face significant challenges such as increased inequality, immigration, and global climate change. In order to address these challenges whole cities have to innovate and learn together. In this thesis, I introduce the Learning Community (LC) model, a new way of collaborating and creating collective impact that emphasizes learning, alongside collective impact, as a central strategy to addressing complex social challenges. This brief uses administrative income tax data coupled with survey responses from roughly 5,000 households living near the poverty line to estimate how access to the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance Marketplaces have affected households’ experiences of extreme illiquidity, which is measured by delinquencies on home payments. To estimate this relationship, we exploit a natural experiment underway in states that did not expand Medicaid and created by the eligibility rules for Marketplace subsidies. Results suggest that insured households living near the poverty line are better able to make timely rent and mortgage payments compared with similar, uninsured households. Given housing …

This study served as a preliminary investigation of training counseling students in two evidence-based practices: motivational interviewing and cognitive behavior therapy. Students’ skill demonstrations were assessed for competency at three data points during students’ graduate training program. Results showed modest success in students learning to competently practice both evidence-based approaches.

The Doctoral Comprehensive Examination In Counselor Education: Faculty Members’ Perception Of Its Purposes, Katie Kostohryz

This research focused on faculty members’ perceptions of the comprehensive examination in counselor education doctoral programs. A between-within repeated measure analysis of variance was computed to evaluate significant differences in perceptions of faculty toward five stated purposes of the comprehensive examination related to their current format of the comprehensive examination. Findings showed significant differences in perceptions within the five stated purposes of the comprehensive examination. There was no significant mean difference between faculty’s perceptions of the stated purposes and the current format of the comprehensive examination; however, a significant interaction was found between the format and purposes of the exam. …

Flipped learning is an instructional approach that employs asynchronous video lectures as homework and active, group-based activities in the classroom (Bishop, 2013). During the past decade, this teaching approach has increased in popularity among K-12 teachers and higher education instructors. Though one model of flipped learning is traditionally described in the literature, several models exist and are detailed in this article. Flipped learning is particularly beneficial to counselor education as it can help increase available class time for practicing counseling skills, engaging in application-based activities, and participating in class discussions. This article provides an overview of grant writing for the counseling professional. The information presented is a combination of several sources including recent literature; current government regulations, policies and submission guidelines; information from foundations and non-profit funding agencies; and the author’s own ten years in grants administration. The aim of this article is to provide counselors and counselor educators new to grant writing a better understanding of the typical processes and procedures in proposal preparation. Concepts discussed include identifying a strong need, working with a team, finding the right funder and the fundamentals of writing a successful proposal.

This paper presents the findings of a pilot quantitative study, investigating counselor educators’ perceptions of the importance of pre-service school counselor training in college and career readiness of African American males, and the ability to train pre-service counselors to facilitate the college and career readiness of African-American males. A significant difference was detected between groups in terms of their perceived ability to prepare school counselors who could implement college and career readiness programs for African American males.

This study utilized a modified Strange Situation Test to investigate attachment behavior of shelter dogs to an experimental owner and a stranger observing physical contact and location. No difference was seen in physical contact but a small difference was seen in location.

The Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is a research program which is owned and operated by the Mars Society. The MDRS is located in Hanksville, Utah which hosts simulations that are typically two weeks long for professional scientists and engineers as well as college students of all levels, in training for human operations specifically on Mars. Objective: Exposure to multiple disasters, both natural and technological, is associated with extreme stress and long-term consequences for older adults that are not well understood. In this article, we address age differences in health-related quality of life in older disaster survivors exposed to the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the role played by social engagement in influencing these differences.
