Clergy can have a negative impact on churches and other individuals when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face and feeling ashamed will likely permeate clergy’s decision-making processes without even being noticed. This study explores the essence of face and face management and the relationship between face management and two characteristics of servant-leadership—awareness and healing—in both Chinese and American churches through the methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology. Jennifer Saul argues that the evidence from the literature on implicit biases entails a form of skepticism. In this paper, I argue that Saul faces a dilemma: her argument is either self-defeating, or it does not yield a skeptical conclusion. For Saul, both results are unacceptable; thus, her argument fails.

The goal of the World Report on Disability (WHO 2017) is for all people to live a life of health, comfort, and dignity. This minimal projection for human existence becomes problematic given that there are an estimated one billion people world-wide with reduced functionings or disabilities. This is further complicated by the fact that 80% of those with disabilities are living in low and middle income counties, suggesting a strong link between disability and poverty. (Banks, Kuper and Polack, 2017) Disability, therefore, is a complex intersectionality between health, poverty, and the environment. Social network analysis can draw upon surveys and discussions to generate quantitative and qualitative data. We describe network data generated via a social network survey and discussion activity with high school science teachers in a teacher leadership development program. Data include social network maps related to seeking expertise in teaching content and/or pedagogy, disaggregated by contacts at the school, district, state, nation, and international spheres of influence.
