Climate Change And Globalization In The Americas: Case Studies Of Mitigation And Adaptation, Mary Finley-Brook, Melissa Haeffner, Charmaine Heslop-Thomas, Elma Montaña, Leah Sprain

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Robin Leichenko and Karen O‘Brien have proposed ―double exposure‖ as a conceptual framework to demonstrate how processes of globalization and global environmental change (GEC) redefine risk and encourage new, interrelated responses to social and ecological transitions (O‘Brien and Leichenko, 2000; Leichenko and O'Brien, 2008). In particular, the concept encourages researchers and policy makers to consider interplay between global climate change and globalization and how this is expressed unevenly across space. After reviewing the ways double exposure has been used in the literature, we consider four case studies to investigate the utility of the framework for analyzing and understanding climate change …

Feminist Aesthetics And The Neglect Of Natural Beauty, Sheila Lintott 2010 Bucknell University

Feminist Aesthetics And The Neglect Of Natural Beauty, Sheila Lintott

Faculty Journal Articles

Feminist philosophy has taken too long to engage seriously with aesthetics and has been even slower in confronting natural beauty in particular. There are various possible reasons for this neglect, including the relative youth of feminist aesthetics, the possibility that feminist philosophy is not relevant to nature aesthetics, the claim that natural beauty is not a serious topic, hesitation among feminists to perpetuate women's associations with beauty and nature, and that the neglect may be merely apparent. Discussing each of these possibilities affords a better understanding of, but none justify the neglect of natural beauty in feminist aesthetics.

Effect Of Organochlorines On Human Endocrine System, Ratana Sapbamrer 2010 Chulalongkorn University

Effect Of Organochlorines On Human Endocrine System, Ratana Sapbamrer

Applied Environmental Research

Organochlorines are classified as persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disrupters. They were widely used for insect control and malaria vector control programs. Although most organochlorines were officially banned in many countries, high levels have been found in ecosystem and food chain. Because organochlorines act as endocrine disrupters and lipid soluble chemicals, it is difficult to excrete these environmental pollutants from the body, and consequently caused adverse effects on endocrine system in wildlife and humans. Epidemiological studies have suggested that exposure to organochlorines in adults linked with an increase incidence of reproductive tract abnormalities, decreased sperm quantities and qualities, and reproductive …

Relationship Of The Quantity Of Blood Lead Levels And The Knowledge, Work Practice, And Attitude Of Workers In A Recycling Battery Factory In Nakhonsawan Province, Santi Keadthongthawee, Piyalamporn Havanond 2010 Chulalongkorn University

Relationship Of The Quantity Of Blood Lead Levels And The Knowledge, Work Practice, And Attitude Of Workers In A Recycling Battery Factory In Nakhonsawan Province, Santi Keadthongthawee, Piyalamporn Havanond

Applied Environmental Research

This research was a cross-sectional study. The purpose was to study relationship between knowledge, work practice and attitude of workers toward quantity of lead in their blood. The study took place during January-December 2008 in a recycling battery factory in Nakhonsawan Province by means of purposive sampling. Relevant data were gathered by structured questionnaire which was tested for reliability by means of Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Analysis of the relationship was performed via Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient. The statistical significance was considered when p < 0.05. The results of the study of total 72 workers were as followings: average score of knowledge was 12.8 out of 15 with the SD of 1.6, max score of 15 and min score of 9; average behavior score of workers was 12.9 out of 15 with SD of 1.3, max score of 15 and min score of 9; average score on attitude was 22.7 out of 30 with SD of 0.94, max score 25 and min score of 21. Hence, majority of them were in good knowledge (86.1 %) and had good work practice (93.1 %). As well, all workers (100 %) had good attitude. Significant (p < 0.05) relationship between levels of lead in blood and behavior of workers was found. The workers with high quantity of lead in their blood stream took more precaution on their work practice. This might be the fact that they knew that lead in blood could naturally be released by mechanism of body. Furthermore, the condition could be improved if they do not obtain further lead. On the other aspect, the relationship between age and level of lead in blood is also significant (p < 0.001). The workers with older age had more quantity of lead in blood than young workers. However, there was no relationship among quantity of lead in blood toward attitude or knowledge of the workers. From the study, it is suggested that annual blood test and physical examination of all workers should be implemented. Furthermore, it should emphasize on the campaign of good work practice. Especially, smoking during working hour must be strictly prohibited, since the protection mask has to be taken off and open the chance of taking the lead in.

Short-Beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus Delphis) Occurrence In The Moray Firth, North-East Scotland, Kevin P. Robinson, Sonja Eisfeld, Marina Costa, Mark P. Simmonds

Ecology Collection

The short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is regarded as notably rare or absent from the northern North Sea, but recent evidence suggests a rising frequency of the species in these waters with increasing regional sea temperatures. The following paper documents the presence of D. delphis in the Moray Firth in north-east Scotland and provides the first evidence for the sustained occurrence of these delphinids in this region during the warmer summer months at least. Sightings were collated during systematic surveys of the outer Moray Firth between 2001 and 2009 by independent research teams from the CRRU and WDCS. A total …

Fire Effects On Wildlife In Tallgrass Prairie, Maria Gaetani, Kayla Cook, Sherry Leis 2010 Missouri State University

Fire Effects On Wildlife In Tallgrass Prairie, Maria Gaetani, Kayla Cook, Sherry Leis

United States National Park Service: Publications

Abstract

In the tallgrass prairie region of North America, grasslands are often burned on a rotational schedule to prevent the encroachment of woody species and maintain the vigor of plant communities. Although prescribed fire practitioners often consider the effects of fire on plant communities, the effects of fire on wildlife are also important. Practitioners as well as park visitors inquire about the effects of fire on birds, deer, and other animals of interest. Many wildlife species focus on vegetation structure in choosing suitable habitats, and fire can temporarily alter that structure. Wildlife species have varying habitat needs, and therefore, a …

Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The present study examined how familial and institutional factors interact with the academic experiences of a diverse group of Black males enrolled as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors at one university. Ogbu’s (1998) Cultural-Ecological Theory of Minority School Performance, a theoretical framework, posits that the manner by which a group achieves minority status, coupled with community and family educational values, impacts academic achievement. Immigrants, voluntary minorities, perform better academically than involuntary minorities (nonimmigrants) because they are more accepting of and more likely to adapt to the White middle-class norms upon which schools in the United States are based …

The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Through an ethnographic depiction of cultural creolization, this paper will detail the ways in which traditional Filipino values have been successfully mixing with and eventually lodging into the intersubjective landscape of Cagayan Valley, where the Chinese, Ibanag, Ilocano, and Itawes ethnic groups dwell. This cultural creolization process informs the ways in which the imagined social reciprocity between the self and others has been governed by a historically constituted power/knowledge system: the padrino system. This system is mainly composed of the symbiotic codes and social practices of (1) Catholicized ritual kinship and (2) the Tagalog ethics of “debt of gratitude” (utang …
